Chapter 49: A Grim Bargain
1.3k words
Emptiness gnawed at Ares, but now, a new horror twisted within it. Seraphina’s words, a venomous whisper, had seeped into the very core of his being. Not gifts, she’d said. Corruptions. Every powerful individual, every 'god-like' ability, a potential host for the Void Parasite. He was a Reaper, a bringer of death, an immortal. What festered inside *him*?
Cosmic dread had settled deep. He hadn't just faced an external enemy in the Shadow Monarch; he had faced a reflection of what he might become, what he might already be. The gnawing void, the lack of purpose, the chilling efficiency of his powers – were these *his* traits, or the slow, insidious work of a parasite?
Sleep offered no reprieve. Visions, not of the past he couldn't recall, but of a future consumed by shadow, flickered behind his eyelids. He saw himself, a monstrous silhouette, devouring light, leaving only desolation. He saw Xenia, a vibrant land, reduced to ash under his silent, unfeeling gaze.
He needed answers. He needed a way to fight this insidious enemy, not just in the world, but in himself. His usual cold logic failed him. This wasn't a battle he could win with scythe or shadow.
Only one name surfaced from the scattered whispers of forbidden lore he'd passively absorbed over his travels: Kaelen the Obsidian. A reclusive sorcerer, rumored to dwell in the forgotten peaks of the Shadowfell Mountains. Legends painted him as mad, a hermit obsessed with ancient, dangerous magic. Perfect.
Days blurred into a relentless journey. Ares moved with grim determination, his senses tuned to the faint, distorted magical signatures he sought. He ascended treacherous, icy slopes, navigating a labyrinth of jagged rock and swirling blizzards. The air grew thin, sharp, scraping at his lungs even with his enhanced physiology.
Finally, a faint, sickly green glow pierced the gloom. Nestled within a cavern carved into the mountain's face was Kaelen's lair. A single, gnarled tree, impossibly alive in the frozen wasteland, guarded the entrance, its twisted branches bearing iridescent, pulsating fungi.
Ares pushed aside a heavy, fur-lined hide covering the cave mouth. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of ozone, dried herbs, and something else – something metallic and acrid. The cavern opened into a sprawling chamber, haphazardly lit by glowing crystals embedded in the walls and a sputtering fire in the center.
Books, scrolls, and odd artifacts were stacked precariously on every surface. Skulls, both human and beast, grinned from dusty shelves. Glass vials bubbled with unidentifiable liquids. A raven, ancient and one-eyed, perched on a stack of tomes, its head cocked, observing Ares with unsettling intelligence.
Kaelen emerged from a shadowy alcove. He was a creature of sharp angles and hollow spaces. His face, deeply lined, was framed by wild, sparse white hair. Sunken eyes, the color of tarnished brass, peered out from beneath heavy brows. He wore robes patched with various furs and leathers, each piece seemingly imbued with its own faint, unsettling aura.
"Another lost soul seeks solace in the forgotten," Kaelen rasped, his voice like dry leaves skittering across stone. He shuffled closer, his gaze unnervingly piercing. "Or perhaps, a soul already lost, seeking its way back to perdition?" A thin, humorless smile stretched his lips.
Ares stood his ground, his hand not moving for his scythe, though the impulse was there. "I seek knowledge," he stated, his voice devoid of inflection. "About entities. Parasites that corrupt power. The Void Parasite."
Kaelen's eyes widened fractionally, a spark of something almost like interest igniting within their depths. He ran a bony hand through his stringy hair. "Ah, the great slumbering devourer. Few know of it. Fewer still dare to speak its name. And you, Reaper, *you* come asking."
He circled Ares slowly, his head tilted, studying him with an intensity that felt less like curiosity and more like a predatory assessment. "You carry a heavy weight, young death. A grand power. Tell me, does it sing to you? Does it whisper of hunger? Of an emptiness that even endless slaying cannot sate?"
Ares's jaw tightened. The sorcerer's words struck too close, echoing his deepest, most unspoken fears. "Seraphina spoke of it. A corruption, not a gift. It infects the powerful. I fear it infects me."
Kaelen stopped, directly in front of Ares. His breath, smelling faintly of sulfur and stale wine, ghosted over Ares's face. "Fear is a wise companion, Reaper. It keeps the foolish from plunging headlong into the abyss. And you, child, stand at its very edge."
"Can you fight it?" Ares pressed, ignoring the sorcerer's theatricality. "Can you extract it? Contain it?"
Kaelen cackled, a dry, rattling sound. "Extract? Contain? Foolish, arrogant mortal! The Void Parasite is not a leech to be pulled. It is a fundamental truth, a cosmic hunger. It exists *within* the fabric of Xenia, within the very essence of power itself. It cannot be 'removed' without unraveling the host entirely."
Ares's patience frayed. "Then what? Is there no counter? No way to fight it from within?"
"A counter? Perhaps. A long, arduous, and *costly* process," Kaelen mused, his eyes narrowing. "One that requires a sacrifice. A ritual of severance, to isolate the parasite's influence, to sever its tendrils from your true self. But it is not a cure. Merely a reprieve. A battle you must wage eternally within your own soul."
"Tell me the cost," Ares commanded, his voice a low growl. Desperation was a cold claw in his chest, tighter than any fear he'd known. The idea of eternal internal struggle was daunting, but the alternative was annihilation, not just of himself, but potentially Xenia.
Kaelen straightened, his gaunt frame seeming to gain a sudden, unsettling authority. "The counter-ritual demands a profound offering. It must be fueled by a piece of the host's own essence. A fragment of your spirit, Reaper. Not just a drop of blood, not a memory, but a sliver of what makes you, *you*."
Ares felt a cold dread trickle down his spine, a feeling far more unsettling than any physical threat. A piece of his essence? He had so little of himself left already, a fragmented past, an empty core. Would this accelerate the very transformation he sought to prevent? Would severing a part of himself make him *less* human, *more* Reaper, *more* void?
He clenched his fists, knuckles white. The thought was terrifying. Losing another piece of himself, the only anchor he had to a sense of identity, however vague. But what choice did he have? The alternative was to succumb entirely, to become the very thing he hunted.
His gaze met Kaelen's. The sorcerer's eyes glinted with an ancient, knowing mischief. "It will be painful, Reaper. A tearing. A searing. And there is no guarantee you will like what remains. Your spirit will be laid bare, its deepest vulnerabilities exposed. The parasite might even seize the opportunity to consume more, to accelerate its process."
Every word was a calculated blow. Kaelen clearly relished the fear he saw flicker in Ares's usually impassive face. The stakes were impossibly high. He was gambling his very soul, risking becoming the monster he feared, all for a chance at fighting a war within himself.
His choice was made. The weight of Xenia, the memory of Seraphina's desperate plea, pressed down on him. The fear of what he might become, combined with the deeper dread of what he already might be, drove him forward.
"I accept," Ares said, his voice flat, but with an underlying current of grim resolve. There was no going back. This was his only option, however terrible.
Kaelen's grin widened, revealing yellowed teeth. He reached into the folds of his robes, pulling out a shimmering obsidian dagger. Its blade, impossibly sharp, hummed with dark energy, a faint violet glow emanating from its edges. He held it out, hilt first, towards Ares.
"Offer your spirit, Reaper, or be consumed."
