Chapter 12 of 25

The Problem Lin Mo Didn't Know He Found

988 words

Lin Mo found Xu An near the entrance. “You disappeared.” Xu An looked offended. “You disappeared first.” “I was eating.” “I know.” “How?” “You had cake on your sleeve.” Lin Mo looked down. There really was cake on his sleeve. He wiped it away. “Evidence can be fabricated.” Xu An laughed. “Let's go. The event is almost over.” “Good.” Lin Mo had survived. That was what mattered. He didn't care about the speeches. He didn't care about the companies. He didn't care about famous guests. He certainly didn't care about the people whose names belonged in the novel. He just wanted to go home. Unfortunately, Professor Zhang appeared before he could leave. “Lin Mo.” Lin Mo stopped. His expression immediately became cautious. “Yes?” “Could you come with me for a moment?” “Why?” “I want to show you something concerning your library proposal.” Lin Mo relaxed slightly. “Oh.” If it was about the project, fine. The small meeting room was quieter than the main hall. Professor Zhang opened a folder. Chen Yu was already there. “You again,” Lin Mo said. Chen Yu smiled. “We keep meeting.” “Apparently.” Professor Zhang placed several diagrams on the table. “This is the network structure you mentioned in your proposal.” Lin Mo leaned closer. He studied it for several seconds. Then pointed. “This part.” Chen Yu nodded. “The external gateway?” “Yes.” “You noticed it immediately.” “Because it's weird.” Chen Yu laughed. Lin Mo looked at him. “Why is everyone laughing?” “Nothing.” Professor Zhang explained that the university was considering using Lin Mo's proposal for a larger technology upgrade. Lin Mo listened. Then noticed another diagram. “This one isn't yours.” Professor Zhang looked surprised. “How did you know?” “The formatting.” Lin Mo pointed at the page. “This was made by a company.” Chen Yu nodded. “It's from one of our corporate partners.” Lin Mo looked at it again. The structure was similar. Very similar. “Your problem is almost the same.” Chen Yu's expression changed. “What do you mean?” “The traffic bottleneck.” Lin Mo tapped the diagram. “You have the same kind of outdated gateway.” Silence. Lin Mo looked around. “What?” Professor Zhang exchanged a glance with Chen Yu. Then said quietly, “The company spent months investigating that problem.” Lin Mo blinked. “Oh.” He looked at the diagram again. “I guess I got lucky.” Several floors above them, Shen Yichen was reviewing the same information. He wasn't surprised that Lin Mo had noticed the similarity. What interested him was how he had noticed it. Shen Yichen had already met Lin Mo several times. The first time had been at the game shop, when Lin Mo had unknowingly sat on his bag. The second had been at the university gate. The third had been during the library project. Each time, Lin Mo had been exactly the same. Casual. Uninterested. More concerned about his own small routines than about the people around him. Even when Shen Yichen had given him his business card, Lin Mo had barely reacted. He had never tried to contact him. Never asked about the Shen Group. Never tried to use the connection. That consistency mattered. If Lin Mo had suddenly shown extraordinary knowledge about the company's systems, Shen Yichen would have suspected something else. But Lin Mo hadn't. He had simply looked at a diagram and complained that the computers were slow. Then, almost casually, he had found the same structural weakness the Shen Group's engineers had spent months investigating. Shen Yichen leaned back. “Interesting.” His assistant looked at him. “You've already met him several times.” “I know.” “Do you think he deliberately approached the project because of the Shen Group?” Shen Yichen shook his head. “No.” The answer came too quickly to be uncertain. “Why?” “Because if Lin Mo wanted our attention, he would have contacted me already.” His assistant remembered the business card. The one Shen Yichen had personally given Lin Mo. Lin Mo had never used it. Not once. Shen Yichen's eyes narrowed slightly. “That boy avoids trouble.” He remembered Lin Mo's expression when he'd first met him. The way he'd tried to leave the game shop. The way he'd looked at the business card as if it were an unwanted responsibility. The way he'd answered every question with surprising directness. And now this. Shen Yichen tapped the report. “He isn't looking for the Shen Group.” His assistant asked, “Then why keep watching him?” Shen Yichen was quiet for a moment. “Because I want to know whether this was luck.” “And if it wasn't?” “Then Lin Mo is considerably more capable than he lets people believe.” Downstairs, Lin Mo had already lost interest in the corporate diagrams. “Can I go?” Professor Zhang laughed. “Yes.” “Thank you.” Chen Yu looked amused. “You really don't want to know what happens next?” “No.” “Why?” Lin Mo picked up his phone. “Because I'm hungry.” Chen Yu shook his head. “You're consistent.” Lin Mo looked at him. “Is that bad?” “No.” “Good.” He walked out. At the hotel entrance, Lin Mo found Xu An waiting. “You took forever.” “There was a meeting.” “What about?” “Computers.” Xu An stared at him. “You're a computer science student. Of course it was computers.” “Exactly.” They walked toward the street. Lin Mo had no idea that Shen Yichen was still upstairs. He didn't know that the business heir he'd already met several times had begun paying closer attention to him. And he certainly didn't know why. To Lin Mo, Shen Yichen was simply one of the people he desperately wanted to avoid becoming involved with. To Shen Yichen, Lin Mo was no longer merely an amusing university student who kept appearing in unexpected places. He was a familiar face. A recurring coincidence. And now— a technical question Shen Yichen wanted answered. Was Lin Mo simply lucky? Or had he been hiding his ability all along? Shen Yichen intended to find out. Quietly. Without disturbing him. At least for now.
