Chapter 37: Mutual Vulnerability

417 words

Chilled air bit at Elara’s skin, despite the oppressive humidity outside. Every corridor of the detention center felt like a tomb, silent and heavy with unspoken despair. Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a drumbeat of dread. Seeing Julian like this, stripped of his power and confined, felt impossibly wrong. Guards led her through a maze of sterile hallways. Each door clanged shut behind them, echoing her mounting anxiety. Finally, a small, grim visitation room. A table separated by thick, reinforced glass. Her throat tightened. Julian sat on the other side, a stark figure in a standard-issue jumpsuit. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, a shadow of stubble clinging to his jaw. Yet, even in this diminished state, his eyes held an unnerving intensity, a predatory glint that hadn't dulled. He looked tired, yes, but not broken. Seeing her, a flicker of something unreadable crossed his face. Relief? Resignation? He leaned forward, his hands resting on the table, fingers laced together. "Elara," he said, his voice a low rumble, amplified slightly by the intercom system. "I didn't think they'd let you in." Swallowing hard, she reached for the receiver. "I pulled some strings. It wasn't easy." Her gaze swept over him, searching for signs of injury, of distress. He seemed physically unharmed, but the weight of his situation pressed down on them both. "Thorne Industries," she began, the words catching in her throat. "It's gone. Collapsed. Blackwood… he moved faster than anyone expected. The moment you were arrested, the market reacted. It was a hostile takeover, precise and brutal." His jaw tightened, a muscle twitching. His eyes, usually so guarded, flashed with raw fury. His knuckles, even from this distance, seemed to whiten. "I warned you about him. I told you he was dangerous." "I know," she whispered, her own anger simmering. "I know. But this isn't over, Julian. Not for you. Not for us." He scoffed, a humorless sound. "Elara, there's nothing left. They've cornered me. Corporate espionage, fraud… the evidence is airtight, or so they say. My own people turned against me, or rather, Blackwood bought them out from under me. It was a setup from the start." "It *was* a setup," she agreed, her voice firm. "And we're going to dismantle it. I have a plan." He watched her, skepticism etched on his face. "A plan? What plan could possibly work now? My lawyers are useless against Blackwood's reach. He's got the DA in his pocket, probably half the city council."
