Chapter 60: The Ash Garden

776 words

Grinding gears echoed through the command center. Gwen stared at the holoscreen, Koryn’s smug face still burned into his retinas. Explosives. In every soldier. The Iron Dynasty had played him. Their ‘alliance’ was a leash, not a partnership. His jaw tightened. He'd purged his memories, hardened his resolve, but the taste of manipulation still soured his tongue. Every time he thought he gained an edge, the world yanked him back. A shrill alarm pierced the air. Red lights pulsed across the console. An incoming, encrypted broadcast, flooding all local channels. Vaelen. "What is it?" Gwen's voice was flat, devoid of emotion, though a knot tightened in his gut. This was too sudden, too loud. "Sir, a public address," an aide reported, fingers flying across a data pad. "From the Golden Temple. It's... it's displaying live feed from the Old Slums, Sector Seven. The Ash Garden." The aide's voice wavered. "That's where the orphanage is." Ice flooded Gwen's veins. The Ash Garden. His old home. The place where his surrogate family, the children and the elderly who had taken him in, now hid. They were supposed to be safe. His vision sharpened, the world narrowing to the flashing red alert. Vaelen wouldn't broadcast something so openly unless he wanted a specific audience. Unless he wanted *him*. "Put it on the main display," Gwen ordered, his voice low. He didn't wait. He was already moving. No time for Koryn, no time for anything but a brutal, immediate response. --- Turbine engines roared. Gwen’s personal skiff sliced through the polluted sky, leaving the Iron Dynasty's floating fortress behind. Below, Nineteenth North stretched like a fractured circuit board, neon veins crisscrossing ancient, crumbling stone. Distress signals screamed from Sector Seven. A golden dome of pure energy shimmered, encasing the entire district. It pulsed with the familiar, terrifying power of the Golden Temple, sealing off escape, sealing off intervention. Vaelen had made his move. Fists clenched at his sides. He pushed the skiff harder, the wind whipping his hair. His new, cold self urged caution, a strategic retreat. But a deeper, primal fear screamed for him to rush in. His people. His *family*. Landing hard on the periphery of the energy dome, Gwen threw open the skiff's hatch. The air was thick with the scent of ozone and fear. He ran, ignoring the scattered debris, the broken streetlamps, the distant screams of trapped citizens. He burst through the outermost layer of security Vaelen's zealots had established, a small force easily dispatched by his raw speed and combat programming. His eyes scanned the devastation. Charred buildings stood like skeletal fingers against the perpetually dim sky. The Ash Garden, once a sanctuary of resilience, was now a tomb. The golden dome thrummed, generating a suffocating heat. Ahead, in the center of what was once the orphanage’s courtyard, Vaelen stood. His cybernetic form gleamed, stark against the wreckage. High-Arbiter Vaelen, a monstrous god in a city of broken idols. Vaelen wasn't alone. A makeshift gallows, constructed from twisted metal beams, rose from the ground. A single figure dangled above a churning vat. Steam billowed, acrid and metallic. Gwen’s breath caught. His enhanced vision zoomed in. The vat wasn't just steam. It was industrial acid, boiling and spitting, eating away at the very air. And above it, suspended by a single, fraying rope, was Lyra. Her eyes were wide with terror, her body trembling. A thin gag covered her mouth, stifling her cries. Lyra. The girl who had once offered him counterfeit affection, then betrayed him to the highest bidder. The girl he had erased from his memories, or tried to. Vaelen turned, his cybernetic gaze locking onto Gwen. A faint, knowing smile played on his bionic lips. "Gwen. So glad you could make it. Punctual, as always." Anger, cold and sharp, cut through Gwen. "Let her go, Vaelen. This has nothing to do with them." Vaelen chuckled, a hollow, mechanical sound. "Oh, but it has everything to do with them. You see, Gwen, I understand you now. Your strength, your power... it's rooted in paradox. You absorb fear, yet fear itself is your greatest weakness." Vaelen gestured to the surrounding dome. "This entire district is locked down. My zealots have cleared the area. Every soul, every innocent, is trapped. The orphanage you so desperately tried to hide? I found it. And I found your little 'family'. They're all here, Gwen. Watching." Horror ripped through Gwen. He felt a phantom ache in his chest, a memory of a time when he would have crumpled, screamed in rage. Now, only a cold, calculating fury simmered. "What do you want?" he demanded, his voice a low growl. "Simple," Vaelen replied, his voice dripping with condescension. "Your core consciousness. The source of your unique affliction. The Primordial Soup within you. I want it." Vaelen took a step closer to the gallows, his hand resting on a control panel built into the twisted metal. A red button glowed ominously.
