Chapter 13: Iron and Ancient Code

1.0k words

Rain lashed against the reinforced glass windows of the forgotten laboratory, casting long, fractured shadows across the dusty floor. Outside, the neon spires of Nineteenth North pierced the dark sky like jagged teeth, bleeding hot pink and electric blue light into the toxic smog. Inside, the air hung thick with the metallic tang of copper and the bitter, sharp scent of scorched wiring. Gwen stood frozen, his eyes locked on the heavy iron doors that had kept the world out for so long. Behind him, Lyra shrank into the corner, her fingers trembling as she clutched a leather-bound notebook to her chest. Metal screeched as the heavy security bolts on the door began to warp and buckle under immense external force. Standing in the center of the room, Gwen felt his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. High-Arbiter Vaelen stepped through the ruined threshold, his massive frame blocking the flickering light of the corridor behind him. Gold-plated carbon fiber armor covered his chest and shoulders, etched with ancient runic codes that hummed with a soft, dangerous light. His mechanical faceplate stared blankly at Gwen, two glowing blue optical lenses whirring as they focused on their target. "You cannot escape the judgment of the temple, boy," Vaelen said, his voice a synthesized baritone that rattled the loose glass vials on the tables. Cold terror washed over Gwen, freezing the blood in his veins as he realized just how small he was in the shadow of this cybernetic giant. Gwen swallowed hard, forcing his trembling hands to rise as he tried to summon the dark magic swimming in his blood. Drawing on the stolen power of the Primordial Soup, he felt a sudden, sickening heat surge through his veins. Shadows began to pool around his boots, bubbling up like boiling tar and twisting into horrific, unnatural shapes. This was his only defense, his ability to pull the deepest terrors from his enemies' minds and make them flesh. Deep inside his mind, a precious memory began to fray and dissolve, sacrificed to fuel the dark spell. He forgot the name of the kind old woman who had given him a warm coat during his first winter in the slums. Gasping at the sudden, empty void in his mind, Gwen pushed the dark magic forward with a desperate cry. Out of the pooling shadows rose a towering, multi-limbed monstrosity, its face a hollow mask of screaming mouths and weeping eyes. It let out a silent, psychic shriek that shook the dust from the ceiling rafters, lunging directly at the high-arbiter. Vaelen didn't even flinch. His optical sensors whirred as they analyzed the dark projection, instantly recognizing the lack of physical mass. With a metallic click, the high-arbiter stepped right through the horrific entity, dispersing the black smoke with his massive chassis. "Your parlor tricks are useless against those who have conquered the limitations of the human mind," Vaelen sneered. Stepping forward with blinding, mechanical speed, the giant closed the distance between them before Gwen could even blink. Pure physical force slammed into Gwen’s chest as Vaelen’s gold-plated hand wrapped around his throat. Shockwaves of pain radiated through his skull as Vaelen lifted him high off the ground, cutting off his air completely. Gwen thrashed, his fingers clawing uselessly at the cold, unyielding metal of Vaelen's wrist. Stronger than any human could ever hope to be, the high-arbiter didn't show a single ounce of strain. --- Slamming Gwen onto the hard stone floor, Vaelen pinned him down with a heavy cybernetic boot pressed firmly against his chest. Bones clicked and groaned under the immense weight, threatening to shatter with the slightest increase in pressure. Air refused to enter Gwen's lungs, and his vision began to blur at the edges, dark spots dancing in his eyes. "This sacred essence does not belong to thieves or street rats," Vaelen said, looking down with emotionless, glowing eyes. "Primordial Soup belongs to the gods of old, the architects who built the foundation of this city." "Only those who have discarded their pathetic, fragile flesh are worthy to wield the code of creation." "Your weak heart and your desperate need for affection make you nothing but a flawed vessel." Gwen stared up through a haze of tears, his body completely paralyzed by the crushing force of the boot. Why had he always tried to please everyone, to find safety in the warmth of others, when the world was this cold? Gentleness had never saved him from the dark slums, and it certainly would not save him from the iron fist of the temple. Every instinct he possessed screamed at him to fight back, but his muscles were useless, his magic flickering out like a dying candle. Looking past the golden armor, he saw Lyra watching from the shadows, her eyes wide with horror and helplessness. He wanted to tell her to run, to save herself, but only a wet gasp escaped his compressed throat. Vaelen reached down, his heavy armor clanking as he drew a long brass instrument from his golden sash. From the tip of the cylinder, a long, hollow extraction needle slid out with a sickening mechanical hiss. Ultraviolet light flared along the length of the needle, humming with a high-pitched vibration that made Gwen's teeth ache. "This will extract the code from your biological systems," Vaelen muttered, his voice devoid of any human empathy. "It will be painful, but your suffering is of no consequence to the grand design." Screaming in silent terror, Gwen tried to turn his head, but Vaelen’s metallic fingers clamped onto his jaw, locking him in place. Slowly, the high-arbiter lowered the pulsing needle, the sharp point catching the light as it hovered just inches from Gwen's face. Just as the cold metal tip brushed against his skin, a sharp clink echoed from the far corner of the ruined room. Vaelen raises a glowing extraction needle, aiming it directly at Gwen’s eye, when Lyra throws a smoke grenade between them.
