Chapter 47: The Last Stand
893 words
Choking dust filled Elara's lungs. Rubble rained down, a deafening cacophony of twisting metal and cracking concrete. She stumbled, hands flying out to brace against a splintering support beam.
"Silas!" she screamed, her voice raw.
Somewhere nearby, the metallic clang of a pipe meeting bone echoed. He was still fighting. His rage, a palpable wave, reached her even through the chaos.
Veins pulsed in Silas's neck. Each blow landed with a sickening thud. The cartel leader, a hulking man named Mateo, grinned through a split lip, blood trickling down his chin.
Mateo moved with surprising speed, a blur of muscle and malice. He ducked under Silas's wild hook, then drove a knee into Silas's gut.
Wind rushed from Silas’s lungs. He gasped, doubling over, but didn't fall. The pain was a dull counterpoint to the sharp agony in his heart. Leo.
Leo's last breath. A flatline. The image seared into his mind, fueling a cold, hard fury.
He straightened, a guttural growl escaping his throat. A shattered piece of rebar lay near his foot. He snatched it up, the jagged edge glinting in the dim, dusty light.
Mateo's eyes widened fractionally. He was accustomed to opponents breaking. Not Silas.
Silas swung. The rebar whistled through the air, aimed for Mateo's head. Mateo dodged, but the force of the blow grazed his temple.
A fresh gash opened. Mateo roared, a primal sound of frustration and pain. He lunged, disarming Silas with a brutal kick that sent the rebar spinning into the gloom.
Then, Mateo was on him. Fists hammered, a relentless assault on Silas's face and ribs. Silas absorbed the blows, refusing to yield. He saw Leo's face in the leader's features.
He saw the faces of every child trafficked, every family destroyed. This man, this monster, represented all of it.
Elara pushed herself forward. Her eyes scanned the collapsing structure. Sparks flew as power lines snapped. A section of ceiling groaned, then gave way with a thunderous roar.
She dove behind a partial wall, shards of concrete exploding around her. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Escape. She had to find an escape. For both of them.
But Silas. He was still fighting. She couldn't leave him. Not like this. Not after… Leo.
A fresh wave of grief threatened to drown her. Leo was gone. The telemetric link, the one thing connecting her, was silent.
No. Focus. Get out. Get Silas out.
She spotted an emergency exit sign, flickering erratically in the dust-filled air. It was partially blocked by a mountain of twisted metal.
"Silas!" she screamed again, her voice cracking. "Emergency exit! North wall!"
Silas heard her. The words cut through the ringing in his ears, through Mateo’s grunts. A flicker of hope, quickly extinguished by another brutal punch to his jaw.
Mateo snarled, pinning Silas against a buckling pillar. "You think you can stop me? You think you can save them?"
He spat, blood mixing with dust on his chin. "Your son, Dr. Thorne. He died trying to save them too."
The words struck Silas harder than any punch. A red haze descended. His vision narrowed. This wasn't just about survival anymore. It was about vengeance.
He bucked, a surge of adrenaline coursing through his veins. He headbutted Mateo, a desperate, wild blow.
Mateo staggered back, momentarily stunned. Silas didn't hesitate. He drove his elbow into Mateo’s throat, then followed with a flurry of short, brutal jabs.
Mateo choked, clawing at his neck. His eyes bulged, surprise replacing his usual sneer.
Silas didn't stop. He unleashed every ounce of his training, every suppressed instinct. He fought with the savagery of a cornered animal, fueled by loss.
Meanwhile, Elara clawed at the debris. Her hands were bleeding, nails torn. The metal was sharp, the concrete heavy. She needed a lever. Anything.
A thick pipe, bent at a strange angle, caught her eye. She grabbed it, straining. It was heavy, but manageable.
She wedged the pipe under a twisted beam, gritting her teeth. Muscles screamed in protest. She pulled, pushed, grunted.
Slowly, agonizingly, the beam shifted. A gap widened, just enough. Dust poured through the opening.
The ground shuddered violently. More ceiling panels ripped away, revealing jagged rebar and dark, empty space above.
"Silas, hurry!" Elara yelled, her voice hoarse. "It's collapsing faster!"
Silas landed a brutal uppercut to Mateo's chin. The cartel leader's head snapped back. He was wobbly, his movements slowing.
This was his chance. Silas aimed a final, devastating kick. It connected squarely with Mateo's chest.
Mateo flew back, crashing into a weakened section of wall. The impact sent a fresh tremor through the already unstable structure.
His eyes rolled back. He slumped, unconscious, maybe worse. Silas didn't care. He just needed to get to Elara.
Moving quickly, Silas pushed through the suffocating dust. His body screamed in protest. Every muscle ached, every breath was a struggle.
He saw Elara, struggling with the final pieces of debris, her face streaked with dirt and blood. She looked up, her eyes wide with a desperate hope.
"Silas!" Her voice was a cracked whisper.
Just as he reached her, a horrific creak echoed through the cavernous space. The sound was distinct, louder than the general roar of the building's demise.
He glanced up.
A massive, structural beam, thick as a tree trunk, groaned. It tore free from its moorings high above them.
Directly above Elara.
Panic seized Silas. His blood ran cold. The beam hung for a terrible, eternal second, swaying precariously.
Then, with a tortured shriek of metal, it began its descent.
It was falling. Fast.
Silas had mere seconds.
He watched, paralyzed for a fraction of a heartbeat, as the enormous weight began to plummet toward Elara.
His vision tunnelled. Everything slowed. The dust motes danced in the sliver of light. Elara's face, her hopeful expression, frozen in time.
No. He couldn't lose her too.
He had to move.
He had to save her.
