Chapter 32: The Doctor's Revelation
510 words
Slipping through the reinforced doors, Elara felt the sterile chill of the facility prick her skin. The air hummed with a low, constant thrum of unseen machinery. Silas guided her down a pristine hallway, his hand a steady presence at her lower back.
Her heart hammered, a frantic drum against her ribs. Every step brought her closer to Leo, and to the truth she both craved and dreaded. The detour, a desperate flight from the cartel, had only intensified her fear.
They entered a consultation room, bathed in soft, indirect light. A man in surgical scrubs, his face etched with a weary intelligence, rose to greet them. Dr. Aris Thorne, Silas had mentioned.
His eyes, a startling blue, held a profound gravity. "Ms. Vance, Mr. Maxwell. Thank you for making it here under such… challenging circumstances."
Elara's throat tightened. "Leo. How is he? Is he stable?"
Thorne gestured to two chairs. "Please, sit. He is stable, for now. Our preliminary diagnostics confirm the worst. It's a highly aggressive form of neuro-degenerative myopathy. Rapid onset, rapid progression. Without intervention, his prognosis is… grim."
A cold wave washed over Elara. Grim. The word hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Her vision blurred for a second.
Silas's jaw clenched. "The treatment you proposed. Is it still viable?"
Thorne nodded slowly. "It is. But I must be unequivocally clear. This isn't a cure in the traditional sense. It's an experimental gene therapy, coupled with neural-reprogramming nanobots. It targets the specific genetic markers that are causing his rapid deterioration."
He paused, his gaze meeting Elara's. "We've had limited success in animal trials, and one human trial. That patient experienced significant adverse reactions. There are no guarantees. The risks are substantial: irreversible neurological damage, organ failure, even death."
Elara's breath hitched. Death. She pictured Leo's bright, mischievous eyes, his infectious laugh. The idea of him enduring more, risking more, tore at her.
"But it's his only chance, isn't it?" Her voice was a bare whisper, raw with desperation.
Dr. Thorne's expression softened with genuine regret. "Yes, Ms. Vance. It is. Without it, the progression will continue unabated. He has weeks, perhaps a few months, at best, before the damage becomes irreversible."
Weeks. Months. Not years. Not a lifetime. The stark reality hit her with brutal force. Her son was dying, and this terrifying, risky gamble was their last hope.
Silas leaned forward, his voice calm, but with an underlying steel. "What do we need to do? What's the timeline?"
"The core treatment protocol is ready," Thorne explained. "The nanobots are specially synthesized for Leo's unique genetic profile. However, there's a critical component missing. A neural pathway modulator."
Elara frowned. "A what?"
"It's a very specific resonant crystal," Thorne clarified. "It emits a unique frequency, essential for stabilizing the neural re-patterning sequence during the initial phase of the nanobot integration. Without it, the treatment will almost certainly destabilize, causing catastrophic brain damage."
His words painted a chilling picture. One small, missing piece could turn a sliver of hope into a total nightmare.
