Chapter 4 of 10
The Apex Nap

Jorik’s voice, a raw snarl of fury and possessive threat, echoed through the hidden mic. Valtor went rigid, his silver eyes turning flinty. He turned from the array of screens, his gaze sweeping over Neyla. She stood amidst the shattered remnants of the titanium mug, a faint, almost invisible scratch tracing her forearm where a shard had grazed her. She had barely noticed it. Her gaze was on the sprawling, intricate map of the Culling Labyrinth, illuminated by holographic projections, a yawn stretching her lips.
“That feral cur will learn,” Valtor stated, his voice a low rumble that vibrated with contained power. He moved with swift, silent grace, stepping directly in front of Neyla, blocking her view of the screens. His broad shoulders seemed to expand, a living wall between her and the danger outside. “But first, you need to be secured.”
Neyla blinked, her long lashes brushing her cheek. “Secured?” she repeated, her tone flat. “I just want to find a better spot for a nap. This bridge has too many flashing lights.”
“There’s a reinforced containment vault, level three,” Valtor explained, reaching for a console mounted beside the blast frame. His palms keyed in a rapid sequence across the glass. “Class-eight durasteel, impenetrable. It’s soundproofed, dark, and stocked with… well, whatever you desire. It will keep you safe while we deal with Jorik.”
He glanced at her, a flicker of concern softening the edges of his formidable demeanor. His gaze dropped to the minuscule scratch on her arm, a dark line against her pale skin. “You’re bleeding.”
Neyla looked down, tilting her head. “Oh. It’s fine. Barely feel it.” She dismissed it with a shrug. “But a vault? That sounds like effort. I’d have to walk all the way down there.”
“It’s a direct pneumatic lift,” Valtor countered, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. “Zero effort. But first, let me see that.” He reached out, his long, elegant fingers gently taking her arm. His touch was feather-light, sparking a sudden prickle that traveled straight down her spine. The faint scent of ozone and something akin to scorched earth intensified around them. Her blood, already singing with newfound power, seemed to pulse in time with his proximity. She felt a strange, heady rush, a potent recognition that hummed beneath her skin.
Valtor’s thumb stroked the line of the scratch, his touch sending a shiver of warmth through her. His silver eyes, now closer, held a depth she hadn’t noticed before, a raw, primal intensity that mirrored the rising heat in her own veins. The air between them thickened with charged static, the drone of the monitors fading into the background. He leaned in, his breath warm on her face. “Even an Apex-Human needs to heal properly,” he murmured, his voice a silken rasp. He brought her arm closer, inspecting the split flesh with quiet focus.
Before he could do anything else, the massive durasteel door to Valtor’s personal quarters, previously sealed and reinforced to withstand a sustained plasma blast, slid open with a soft hiss. Neyla had pointed vaguely towards it. “Are your pillows in there?” she asked, her voice a little breathy, pulling her arm gently from his grasp. “I prefer silk. This place is all chrome and hard edges.”
Valtor straightened, his gaze snapping to the shattered entryway, then back to Neyla, his brow furrowed in utter disbelief. “I… what?” He took a step towards the door, examining the frame. The thick, seamless durasteel, built to withstand orbital strikes, was now visibly warped, its surface buckling outwards around the latch mechanism. A deep, perfectly circular indentation marred the center of the door, as if struck by an invisible, impossibly dense fist. The deadbolts were sheared clean into twisted, mangled scrap.
Neyla, already wandering towards the opening, paused, looking over her shoulder. “Oh, that? I thought it might be locked. I just… pushed it a little. Like I said, I want a soft pillow. The last one was lumpy.” She gestured vaguely toward the operational deck's utilitarian seating.
Valtor stared at the ruined door, then at her, his jaw slack. The security feeds, displaying Jorik’s furious progress through the labyrinth, seemed distant, irrelevant. He had spent billions developing that door. It had been rated to repel an entire assault team. And she had *pushed* it. Effortlessly. A low, breathless sound escaped his lips. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her, staring with raw awe and a prickle of cold thrill. He had seen her strength before, but this… this was catastrophic power, casually wielded, almost absentmindedly. He felt the pull of their fated bond intensify, a dangerous, intoxicating force that promised both untold power and utter destruction. His gaze dropped to her lips, parted slightly, then back to her eyes, which held an almost childlike innocence despite the devastation she’d wrought. “Neyla,” he breathed, the word a mere whisper, heavy with a new, profound understanding.

Two levels above, within the Vorath Citadel’s primary security hub, Rilla moved with a practiced, desperate urgency. The air reeked of stale synth-ale and the lingering pheromones of agitated shifters. Jorik’s enraged voice still boomed occasionally from the comms, demanding updates, threatening swift punishment for any delay. The Beta’s position was precarious; one wrong move, and her years of careful infiltration would be for naught. Her hands shook as she jammed the sleek, obsidian master bypass key into the ancient, clunky terminal. It wasn’t Valtor’s elegant tech; this was Fendrani pack-issue, designed to be impenetrable to outsiders, but vulnerable to an insider with the right clearance.
She watched as the display flickered, then granted access. A surge of relief washed over her, brief and fleeting. This key would give Valtor’s team direct, instantaneous command over every single trap, every beast hatch, and every environmental hazard throughout the subterranean network. It was the final piece. The full subjugation of Jorik’s pack was now within reach. But getting it out was the problem.
She heard heavy footsteps approaching, the distinct, confident stride of Jorik’s new lead enforcer, a hulking Kroll-shifter named Grol. Rilla’s heart leaped into her throat. She had moments. Her eyes darted around the sparse room, landing on a ventilation shaft above a rarely used storage locker. Her only escape. It was a tight squeeze, but her lean shifter form could manage it.
With a sharp breath, she triggered the key’s data burst, transmitting the bypass payload to Valtor’s encrypted network. The terminal confirmed the transfer. Success. She yanked the key free, nearly dropping it before jamming the drive into a hidden pocket of her tunic.
“Beta Rilla! Jorik demands a full status report on the human’s fate!” Grol’s voice, a guttural bark, echoed from just outside the door. “And why is this terminal active?”
Rilla didn’t hesitate. She scrambled onto the storage locker, her movements fluid and silent. The metal creaked under her weight, a tiny, almost imperceptible protest. She clawed at the vent cover, prying it open with desperate strength. Just as Grol’s massive hand slammed against the door, rattling it in its frame, Rilla squeezed through the narrow opening. The sharp, jagged edge of the metal caught on her tunic, tearing a strip of the dark, fine fabric. She felt a sting, a momentary snag, but she couldn't stop. She pushed forward, her body scraping against the dusty metal, adrenaline coursing through her.
The door burst open a moment later, Grol’s imposing figure filling the frame. His eyes, keen and predatory, swept the empty room. He grunted in frustration, then his gaze snagged on something small, dark, and still fluttering faintly near the ventilation shaft. A small piece of dark gray fabric, identical to the material of Rilla’s uniform, lay on the floor, caught on a loose cable. He bent down, thick claws pinching the scrap to examine the clean, sharp tear. A low growl rumbled in his chest. Rilla, he knew, was meticulous. Too meticulous to leave such a trace. He sniffed the air, catching the faint, stale scent of her pheromones, mixed with a sharper, almost metallic tang he couldn’t place. Suspicion, cold and venomous, began to coil in his gut. He knew Rilla. He knew her too well.
He pocketed the fabric and immediately keyed a comms channel. “Alpha Jorik,” he barked, his voice grim. “Report on Beta Rilla. Something is amiss.”

Back on the deck, Valtor was still rooted in place, staring after Neyla. She had wandered into his personal quarters, drawn by the promise of soft linens, leaving a buckling, ruined frame behind her. He watched her disappear into the opulent, minimalist space, a smile playing on his lips. This woman, this glorious, dangerous, lazy creature, was everything he had ever sought. He was about to follow her when the comms crackled to life, Grol’s urgent, suspicious tone cutting through the quiet.
“Beta Rilla… something is amiss.”
Valtor’s posture straightened, the fleeting warmth vanished behind icy focus. He barked orders into his own comm. “Rilla. Report.”
Silence. Then, a piercing shriek shattered the silence of the room. The lights, which had been a steady, pulsing blue, instantly flashed a violent, alarming red. Klaxons blared, a deafening, rhythmic shriek that vibrated through the floor. Holographic projections flickered wildly, displaying a single, terrifying alert across every screen: **CORE OVERRIDE – SECTOR 7 INITIATED.**
Valtor froze, his head whipping toward the central monitor. The image zoomed in on the labyrinth’s core, a pulsating nexus of arcane energy and engineered biology. The readouts flashed a single, horrifying name. Jorik. That fool. He was manually breaching the mainframe. Not to disable it, but to unleash something catastrophic.
A new icon materialized on the map, a colossal, crimson threat marker, moving with terrifying speed towards their location: **GOLIATH MUTANT – RELEASE CONFIRMED.** The blaring sirens crescendoed, shaking the very floorplates beneath their boots. Jorik, driven to a vengeful madness by the scent of Neyla and her new mate, had just unpenned the underground warren's ultimate horror, directly into their sector.
