The Paralyzing Seed

The roar of the crowd battered Pellina's ears as she gripped the cold brass rail of the spectator box. Below, the arena floor shimmered with fine crimson sand, still damp from the morning’s sacrifices. Timoq stood in the pit, squinting happily into the midday glare. His opponent, a scarred veteran named Grymmok, flexed arms thicker than the boy's ribs. Zarkalla’s smirk from her own lavish box across the arena was a poison dart to Pellina’s gut. The she-wolf had arranged this slaughter, clear as the heavy coin purse dangling from the magistrate's sash.
“The Junder Trials! Today, we test the mettle of our young!” the arena master’s voice boomed, rattling the very stone. He was a portly wolf with eyes too keen for his jovial demeanor, a man known to bend the rules for the right coin. Pellina could almost hear the clink of Zarkalla’s payment in his pocket.
Timoq, armed only with a training spear, looked up at her box, his grin wide and carefree. He raised a hand in a clumsy salute. Pellina forced a vacant, pretty smile in return, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs. Vrokas sat beside her, radiating furnace heat through his fur-lined mantle. He hadn’t spoken since they arrived, his gaze fixed on Timoq with a fierce intensity that bordered on predatory. He suspected nothing of Zarkalla’s machinations, only the inherent danger of the trials.
The gong struck, shuddering through the soles of Pellina’s slippers. The brute charged, kicking up plumes of crimson grit. His axe, dull for training but still hefty enough to shatter bone, swung in a wide, whistling arc towards Timoq’s head.
Timoq, quick but still inexperienced, dodged, the wind of the blade ruffling his hair. He jabbed his spear, a desperate, clumsy thrust that glanced harmlessly off Grymmok’s armored shoulder. The crowd surged, baying for blood. This wasn't a trial; it was an execution.
Pellina pressed her knuckles white against the rail. She saw the glint in Grymmok’s eyes, the sheer, unadulterated intent to maim. This wasn't just a training bout. This was Zarkalla's scheme to crack the fragile human disguise by slaughtering Timoq in the dirt. The bubbly, vacant smile vanished from Pellina's face, replaced by a stark, terrifying clarity. The airhead act, the pretense, it all crumbled.
Time seemed to stretch, thin and fragile. The veteran swung the dull iron blade downward, aiming directly for Timoq’s knee. Timoq stumbled, too slow to evade it entirely, bracing for impact.
But Pellina moved faster. Her fingers darted into the slit pocket sewn behind the silk pleats of her gown. Her fingers closed around a familiar, ribbed pod, no larger than her thumb. It was a dried seed from the Xyloth Wilds, harvested from a thorny clutch of *Somnium Spina*. A powerful, fast-acting neurotoxin, non-lethal in small, concentrated doses, but capable of paralyzing a fully grown wolf for several agonizing hours. The court would have her head if they knew she carried such things.
No. The court would *not* have her head. Not while Timoq lived. Not while Timoq's pulse still beat in his neck.
Her arm snapped out, a blur of motion. She didn't throw it. She *launched* it, a perfect, practiced trajectory honed by years of collecting specimens from treacherous perches. The seed pod, a dark blur against the crimson sand, spun through the air, a tiny, deadly projectile.
It struck the fighter's neck with a soft thud, buried under the roar of the arena. Not his leg, not his arm, but the exposed, fleshy side of his neck, just below the jawline where the carotid throbbed. A single, needle-fine barb, almost invisible to the naked eye, sprang forth from the pod and pricked his skin, delivering its payload.
In an instant, the hulking brute froze. His axe, mid-swing, clattered to the ground with a dull clang. His eyes glazed over, fixed on some unseen horror. His powerful limbs locked, his body rigid, a statue of terror. He swayed, then toppled forward, landing face-first in the sand with a heavy thud, utterly motionless.
The arena, moments before a cacophony of bloodlust, fell into an unnatural, stunned silence. Only the muffled wheezing of the warrior, paralyzed but conscious, broke the sudden hush. Timoq, who had braced for iron crushing bone, stared down at the heap of muscle, then searched the gallery with parted lips. He hadn’t seen the pod, hadn't understood what had happened.
Vrokas, beside Pellina, slowly turned his head. His amber irises narrowed, sharp with sudden bewilderment as he studied her profile. Her jaw had locked hard, the customary dimples and mindless giggle nowhere to be seen. Her hand, still slightly extended from the throw, trembled, not from fear, but from the adrenaline of battle.
“What… what occurred here?” the master stammered, his smile curdling as he trotted out and nudged the unmoving gladiator with an iron-toed boot. “A trick? Some hidden weapon?”
The silence shattered then, not with applause, but with a shriek of pure, unadulterated fury. Zarkalla, her face contorted into a mask of venomous rage, sprang to her feet in her box. Her voice, stripped of its customary purr, sliced across the gallery like broken glass.
“Witchcraft!” she screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Pellina. Her accusation hung in the air, heavy and damning. “It’s foul, forbidden magic! No normal wolf could perform such a feat! She’s not who she claims to be! She’s a changeling, a sorceress! I demand a blood-scent test! Let us see if her true scent matches the glamorous woman she pretends to be, or if the court will find a deceiver in our midst!”
