Chapter 2 of 10

Silver Heirlooms and Slipped Tongues

The Obsidian Den, carved into the sheer face of Mount Karrad, was a labyrinth of polished black basalt and glittering volcanic glass, echoing with the soft thrum of a thousand hidden lives. Vrokas carried Pellina through grand arches and sweeping corridors, his steps silent despite the weight of her in his arms. She kept her head tucked against his shoulder, feigning a dazed exhaustion, but her eyes darted, cataloging the intricate carvings of predatory beasts and strange, twisted flora that adorned the walls. Each image was a mystery, a whisper of the Wilds she yearned to decipher. He deposited her gently on a plush chaise in their quarters, a salon so vast it could have housed a small village. “Rest, little bloom,” his voice rumbled, deep and low, a sound that vibrated through her bones. “The court will convene at the midday bell. Your presence is expected.” Pellina offered a bright, vacant smile. “Oh, of course, darling! Always happy to see… everyone.” She fluttered her fingers vaguely, a perfect imitation of her late sister’s flighty charm. Vrokas’s gaze lingered, a dark, unreadable depth in his eyes, before he turned and strode from the room, leaving her alone in the oppressive opulence. She waited until the heavy obsidian door clicked shut, then scrambled off the chaise, her feigned fragility vanishing. The midday bell. Zarkalla would be there. The healing incident in the Xyloth Wilds had undoubtedly ignited a fresh spark of venom in the jealous she-wolf. Pellina needed to maintain her vapid facade, but also prepare for whatever 'accident' Zarkalla might orchestrate. The midday bell tolled, a deep, resonant boom that vibrated through the cliffside stones. Pellina, draped in shimmering, emerald-spun silks that made her look like a particularly delicate woodland sprite, floated into the grand audience hall. She clung to Vrokas’s arm, her smile a fixed, slightly bewildered expression. He stood beside the carved throne, a towering, towering watchman, his mere presence a stark warning. Courtiers crowded the floor, their gazes sharp and assessing. Whispers slithered through the air, hushed inquiries about her health after her 'ordeal' in the Wilds. Pellina just blinked sweetly, offering vague, airy responses about pretty flowers and the kind Alpha who had saved her. Her act was flawless, a porcelain mask concealing a mind buzzing with botanical classifications and survival strategies. Then, Zarkalla stepped forward. Her smile was a predatory slash, her eyes glinting with malicious intent. In her hands, she held a tray, and upon it, a magnificent, grotesquely oversized silver heirloom: the ceremonial 'Binding Clasp' of the matriarchs. It was a dense, intricately wrought piece, heavy enough to be a weapon, and rumored to be cursed, designed to test the strength and worthiness of new mates. Its surface gleamed with ancient, almost black silver, cool and malevolent. “My Alpha’s mate,” Zarkalla purred, her voice dripping with mock sweetness. “It is tradition for the new matriarch to accept the Binding Clasp directly into her hands, a symbol of her strength and her commitment to the Garkyran pack. It is quite… substantial.” She emphasized the last word, her gaze fixed on Pellina’s wrists, which, even under the long sleeves, were slender and delicate. Pellina’s heart gave a quick, unwelcome thump against her ribs. This wasn't a test; it was an attempted public maiming. The clasp, if dropped, could easily crush the bones of a less-prepared hand. But Pellina wasn’t just 'less-prepared.' She was an airhead. She extended her hands, palms up, her expression one of eager, childlike delight. “Oh, how simply *lovely*!” she chirped, her voice a pitch higher than usual. “Is it… sparkly?” Zarkalla’s lips twitched, a fleeting moment of triumph. She leaned forward, pushing the heavy tray with a sudden, aggressive shove, intending to force the crushing bulk of the pin directly onto Pellina’s outstretched palms. But Pellina, with a perfectly timed, exaggerated gasp of surprise, flinched back just as the tray reached her. Her hands flew up, not to catch the jewelry, but to cover her mouth in a gesture of shocked adorableness. The massive heirloom slid off the tray, not onto Pellina's fragile wrists, but with a dull *thud* directly onto Zarkalla’s left foot. A collective gasp rippled through the hall. Zarkalla’s carefully constructed sneer dissolved into a guttural yelp of pain, her face contorting. She hopped on one foot, clutching the injured appendage, her eyes blazing with fury and humiliation. “Oh, dearie me!” Pellina exclaimed, her voice still impossibly bright. “How dreadfully clumsy of *me*! I just… I got so excited by the pretty, shiny metal, I simply forgot to catch it! Are you quite alright, Zarkalla? Your foot looks a little… squashed.” Vrokas, who had stood like a carved idol, moved. It was a blur of black fur and raw power. He was suddenly between Pellina and the hopping Zarkalla, his immense form taut with feral rage. His eyes, the color of molten gold, fixed on the injured she-wolf. “Any who would bring harm to my mate,” Vrokas snarled, his voice a low growl that vibrated through the floor, “will find themselves stripped of their rank, their name, and their teeth. Consider this a warning, Zarkalla. The next time you ‘test’ her, I will ensure you cannot walk for a season.” Zarkalla, pale with pain and terror, could only nod, clutching her foot. Court guards shrank back against the pillars. No one dared meet Vrokas’s gaze. Pellina, seizing the moment to defuse the escalating tension, patted Vrokas’s arm with a gentle, placating touch. “Now, now, darling. It was just a silly accident. Zarkalla was just trying to be helpful, weren't you, dear?” She flashed Zarkalla another wide, unburdened smile. “Besides, I’m quite certain that ornament is of the *Acanthus argentum* genus. Very resilient, those old forged pieces.” The words, innocent as they sounded to most, hung in the air like a discordant note. *Acanthus argentum*. A classification so specific, so arcane, it belonged to academic texts, not the chatter of a flighty socialite. Vrokas froze, his golden eyes narrowing, his head tilting almost imperceptibly. He slowly turned his gaze from the trembling Zarkalla to Pellina, a new, sharp scrutiny in their depths. The casual touch on his arm, the seemingly innocent slip of tongue… it was a crack in the bubbly facade. He stared at her, searching the blank innocence of her face. The tension, thick and suffocating, suddenly snapped. From the back of the hall, a cheerful, oblivious voice cut through the quiet. “Sister! Alpha! I have amazing news!” Timoq, his face beaming, pushed through the crowd, his freckled face flushed with excitement. He looked entirely too small, too innocent, to be in such a place. He stopped before Vrokas and Pellina, puffing out his chest with childish pride. “I did it! I’ve officially entered the Junder Trials! I’m going to be a gladiatorial champion!”
