Chapter 10 of 10
The Botanist's Sovereignty

The reverberation of the elder's staff faded, leaving a silence colder than the stone itself. Two hulking enforcers, their armored gauntlets gleaming, stepped forward. One clamped a hand on Pellina’s arm, his grip bruising. Her breath caught, not in fear, but in a strange, resolute calm. She had faced down snarling dire-boars and chittering carnivorous flora; these were merely men in heavy iron.
A gaunt, scar-faced executioner emerged from the phalanx of guards. In his hand, he spun a heavy, silver-edged ax, the gleam of its blade a stark pronouncement. His eyes, devoid of emotion, met hers. This was the end. After all the deception, the frantic scrambling, the desperate hope, it was here, on the bloody stones of the Obsidian Den courtyard.
Then, a sound tore through the tension – a low, guttural growl that started deep within Vrokas’s chest and swelled into a full-throated roar, shaking the very foundations of the cliffside palace. The enforcers flinched, their hold on Pellina slackening. Vrokas pushed past them, his movement a blur of enraged power. He ripped Pellina from their grasp with a possessive ferocity that made both guards stumble back, clutching their arms.
He positioned himself between her and the headsman, a living wall of muscle and fury. His fur, still matted with drying gore, bristled. His eyes glowed with an infernal, gold-flecked light, fixed on the old magistrate. “Elder,” his voice rumbled, a challenge that vibrated through the stones, “you speak of the First Fang’s code. Then heed it!”
The elder's brow furrowed, his visage unyielding. “The law is clear, Alpha. Impersonation of a royal mate demands blood.”
“And what claims a mate, magistrate?” Vrokas countered, his voice dripping with menace. “Is it a name penned on parchment by human hand? Or is it the bond forged in blood and bone, woven by the very essence of the Moon’s grace?” He gestured to Pellina, then pressed a hand to his own chest. “The law dictates a mate is claimed by scent and by soul. My mate’s true scent, the rich, intoxicating aroma of soil and ancient earth, has been etched into my very being since the day I first smelled her.”
He took a step towards the tribunal bench, his presence radiating pure, unadulterated power. “You speak of deception? She did not deceive me. I *knew* her. I chose her. Not the ephemeral bloom of a sister, but the resilient, rooted beauty of Pellina. Her essence called to mine. Her touch heals me. Her resolve claims my own.” He pounded his chest, a low thrum echoing across the yard. “My body, my wolf, my very marrow, marks *her* as my destined partner. The law values the truth of the blood above the lie of the tongue. The First Fang’s code states: ‘The bond of a true mate, once forged, transcends all superficialities of identity. The Alpha’s claim, sealed by scent and primal bond, shall stand inviolate before the assembled elders.’”
The magistrate's yellowed eyes narrowed. He glanced at the other Elders, then back at Vrokas, who stood there, an undeniable force of nature, protecting his mate with every fiber of his being. His sheer defiance, backed by the very ancient laws they purported to uphold, broke the tribunal's resolve. The old wolf sighed, a sound like grinding stone. “The Alpha has spoken the ancient truth,” the magistrate conceded, his voice grudging. “The claim of soul and scent holds legal primacy. The charge of impersonation, by this decree, is rendered void.”
A collective gasp rippled through the assembled pack members. Zarkalla, still weeping in the mud, looked up, her face a mask of disbelief and sputtering fury. “But… but Elder! She commanded the wild! She caused the slaughter!”
Before the elder could respond, a smaller, yet no less determined figure stepped forward. Timoq, his face smeared with dirt but his eyes bright with conviction, carried a pouch woven from sturdy leaf-fibers. “Elder,” he announced, his voice clear and surprisingly steady, “Zarkalla arranged my kidnapping. She ordered her cronies to use these.”
He tipped the pouch. Out tumbled a tangle of dark, glossy leaves from the *Murkgrove Vine*, known for its disorienting toxins, and a cluster of vibrant, yet sinister *Gorebloom Blossoms*, whose pollen caused temporary paralysis. Timoq pointed a steady finger at Zarkalla. “She said they would make me ‘compliant’ during my journey to the gorge.”
Zarkalla shrieked, a sound more animal than human, scrambling backward, trying to wipe the evidence from her muddy hands. “Lies! The boy is confused! She poisoned him with her witchcraft!”
Vrokas took a step towards Zarkalla, his growl rising again. “This is the plant that causes disorientation and memory loss, is it not, Elder?” he asked the judge, his tone deceptively calm. “And the Gorebloom, paralyzing only enough to make a victim helpless, but not enough to kill, thereby escaping detection?”
Morvath examined the plants. Sudden familiarity dawned in his eyes, and a deep frown settled on his face. He knew these species well; they were often used in covert acts of malice, difficult to trace. “These are indeed the very flora commonly employed by kidnappers seeking to avoid leaving a lethal trace,” he stated, his voice now devoid of any sympathy for Zarkalla.
He turned his gaze upon the disgraced she-wolf, his previous leniency towards her evaporating. “Zarkalla of the Skarn Tribe,” he boomed, his voice echoing through the den, “your machinations against the Alpha’s mate, your cruel plot to harm the youngling, and your malicious incitement against the Crown are laid bare. By the decree of the High Council, you are stripped of your name, your rank, and your lands. You are exiled from the Garkyran Sovereignty forever. If your shadow so much as touches our borders again, your life will be forfeit.”
Two more enforcers, grim-faced, dragged the wailing Zarkalla to her feet, ignoring her frantic pleas and struggles, and began to haul her away, her humiliated cries fading into the distance.
Vrokas turned back to Pellina, his fierce golden eyes softening with naked devotion. The raw, desperate fear of execution had vanished from Pellina's face. In its place, a slow, genuine smile bloomed – not the vacant, bubbly mask she had worn for so long, but a true, open grin of relief and love. It crinkled the corners of her eyes, reaching the deepest parts of her soul, and for the first time, Vrokas saw the unburdened beauty he had always sensed beneath the facade.
The elder raised his staff once more, though this time without the ominous crack. “Pellina, of the Xylose Line,” he announced, his voice resonating with grudging respect, “by the Alpha’s unchallenged claim and the pack's ancient decree, you are recognized as the rightful mate to the ruler of Garkyra. Furthermore, in light of your unparalleled knowledge of the Xyloth Wilds and your courageous acts in its depths, the elders bestow upon you the title of Head Royal Botanist, with full authority to map, study, and protect the flora of our domain.”
The pack erupted in cheers, roars of relief and admiration washing over the courtyard. Vrokas pulled Pellina into his arms, crushing her against his powerful chest, his scent of rich earth and storm enveloping her completely. She buried her face in his fur, inhaling the scent of her mate, her protector, her sovereign. She was Pellina, a botanist, loved and cherished, standing not as a deceitful imposter, but as the true heart of the Garkyran realm. The empty, bubbly smile was gone, replaced by a radiant joy that promised a future of growth, discovery, and fierce, unyielding love.
Weeks later, the air in the Xyloth Wilds hummed with the energy of new life. Pellina, now adorned with practical, leaf-green tunics and her hair braided back, knelt by a cluster of iridescent Faelight Moss, sketching its delicate structures in a leather-bound journal. Behind her, Vrokas, in his massive wolf form, nudged a rather pungent, thorny vine away from her path with his snout, then let out a soft, happy huff, his golden eyes fixed on his mate in pure, adoring, puppy-like contentment. He was still the terrifying Alpha, but for her, he was merely her devoted, furry guard, ready to tear apart anything that dared to threaten his brilliant botanist in her newly claimed, dangerous paradise.
