Chapter 9 of 10

The Starfall Broadcast

842 words

A high-frequency hum vibrated through the adamantine floor beneath Baili Chen’s bare feet, a prelude to the cyborg's display. The master's red cybernetic lenses intensified, pulsing like malformed hearts, as a cold, guttural voice rattled through a vocoder embedded in his plated throat. “The Starfall. Begins.” The colossal column behind him flared, arcs of sapphire lightning snapping across its polished surface. Interference crashed across Baili’s senses, a digital shriek scraping his nerves. He felt it—the Star Network twisting, no longer a network, but a weaponized neural net, reaching out across the void. Simultaneously, the twelve Royal Guard machines moved. Their energy shields solidified into azure walls. The air filled with the whine of charging plasma emitters. No discernible delay, no individual targeting. They moved in absolute lockstep, their attacks synchronized directly through the Omni-Core. Baili snarled. He had butchered entire demonic sects in his past life, but never faced a dozen walking coffins moving with unified intent. His internal Qi surged, forming a blood-red dome around his stance. It pulsed with violent heat, pushing back against the sterile chill of the vault. Twelve plasma emitters fired. The air ionized into ozone and blinding heat. Lances of coherent radiance slammed into Baili’s barrier, each impact rattling his ribs. The red dome rippled violently, threatening to destabilize. He channeled more essence into the perimeter, but the overlapping bombardment hammered without pause. He dug his heels into the floor, a thin trickle of blood escaping the corner of his mouth. The bipedal hulls advanced, hydraulic stomps jarring the deck plates. The cyborg, wired into the manifold, drew feed directly from their assault, his alloy frame shuddering. The converging beam fire pressed in, compressing the space around Baili and shrinking his perimeter. Crack. A hairline fracture split the red shell. Then another. Focused heat drilled through the same focal point over and over. With a shriek of collapsing energy, Baili’s barrier shattered into drifting scarlet embers. He was thrown backward, skidding across the adamantine floor, his back impacting the curved wall with a sickening thud. Blood welled from his nose and mouth, staining his flight suit. He pushed himself up, joints screaming. The overseer's red optical nodes locked onto him. The cyborg’s spider-like lower chassis disengaged from the spine of the room, steel appendages clanking against the floor plates. Each step was deliberate, ominous. The Royal Guard units cut their beams, weapon cowls venting superheated steam as their commander stalked forward. “A primitive, pathetic organism,” the cyborg grated through the ceiling speakers. “You thought your quaint ‘spirit force’ could stand against the Omni-Core? Against true synchronization? Against a mind that controls the very fabric of this galaxy?” He raised a hydraulic claw, digits tipped with razor edges. It glowed with a faint, surgical blue. “Now, experience the true culmination of evolution.” Just as the cyborg lunged, the overhead bulkhead exploded. Concrete dust, twisted rebar, and shredded wiring rained down in a blinding torrent. From the breach, a sleek `Sky-Dragon` airframe plummeted into the hall, thrusters braking violently. Its massive thrusters roared, kicking up a whirlwind of debris. “Get away from him, you metal freak!” Kira Feng’s voice, raw and furious, boomed through the mecha’s external speakers. Her frame slammed down on reinforced struts, auto-cannon swinging to bear. Behind her through the tear, four `Peregrine` light interceptors dropped in, establishing a defensive arc. Kira’s forearm rack snapped open, pneumatic pressure ejecting a glinting shaft across the open floor. It spun end over end, catching the ambient light. “Chenxing! Catch!” she barked over external comms. “Finish this! We’ll hold the line!” The object landed with a soft clatter beside Baili. It was a military-grade high-frequency vibration blade, its monomolecular edge humming with barely contained destructive potential. He snatched it up, the familiar weight in his hand an unexpected comfort. “You meddling vermin!” the cyborg snarled, synthetic flesh peeling back from chrome teeth. His optical lenses flickered, locking onto the central manifold humming behind him. His steel claw plunged into the high-voltage manifold. The structure groaned, a deep subterranean whine swelling across the station as red warning script flooded Baili’s optic overlay. [WARNING: GRAVITY TETHER OVERLOAD DETECTED. CRITICAL STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY LOSS. ORBITAL FORTRESS DE-ORBIT IN 60 SECONDS.] The deck buckled and listed thirty degrees. Structural ribs warped overhead. The Royal Guard units stumbled, telemetry severed. Kira’s `Sky-Dragon` braced against the slide, stabilization studs biting adamantine. “He’s overloading the station’s core! He’s going to crash us into the gas giant!” Her auto-cannon ripped through an unmoored guard unit. The cyborg’s synthetic laugh ground over the academy's broad-band. “If I cannot control it, then no one will! The Tiangang Interstellar Academy… will be my tomb! And yours!” He was routing raw grid current directly into the orbital drives, blowing every regulator in the superstructure. The station was tearing itself apart. Baili had half a heartbeat to choose: strike the exposed commander before him, or save the cadets sliding toward the abyss. His Dantian held enough spiritual venom for one technique. Enough to butcher the machine, or brace the bulkhead. Not both.
