Chapter 10 of 10
A Perfect Soufflé for the Underworld Overlords

The blare of the self-destruct siren tore through the docking bay, a shrill counterpoint to the automated house network's deceptively cheerful voice. Zibya felt the floorplates hum beneath her boots, the air shimmering with the countdown. Fifty ticks. Forty-five. The pilot, still slumped in his ruined Kryos-Seraph suit, coughed out a laugh that was more spittle than mirth. “You think you’ve won? The Pale will burn this entire block to ash rather than let you escape.”
Tarkhan struggled to rise, a low growl rumbling in his chest. Silver burns still sizzled along his fur, making him snarl at the pain, but his eyes were fixed on the collapsing mech. He was ready to tear the pilot out, but the timer pulsed crimson across the holographic displays, dropping to thirty ticks. His massive paws scraped against the slick floor, seeking purchase.
“No, no, we absolutely don’t want that!” Zibya cried, scrambling back toward Tarkhan, pulling at his scorched fur. “A whole block? Think of the property values! Think of the *ecological fallout*!” She scanned the vast, empty bay, her gaze desperate. There had to be a way. There was always a way. Twenty ticks. The air grew thick, charged with kinetic energy.
[Zenith System: Kinetic charge accumulating. Structural integrity failing. Detonation imminent.]
“Tarkhan, get up!” she pleaded, ribs aching as she pulled. “We have to get clear!”
He roared, pushing himself to his feet, muscles coiling despite the raw burns. Fifteen ticks. The smart-glass wall of the sky-mansion, facing the docking doors, began to haze with pressure.
Suddenly, a new sound ripped through the bay: a snarling engine, the high-pitched whine of an overpowered grav-drive. A sleek, black hover-car, stolen and modified, screamed through the night, a tiny, determined missile against the backdrop of the darkened city. Its headlights flared, blindingly bright, pointed directly at the observation window.
[Zenith System: External impact imminent. Structural integrity compromised. Recalculating…]
Ten ticks. Zibya gaped. “Nisaba?!”
The hover-car, defying every law of physics and common sense, didn’t slow. It accelerated, ramming head-first into the supposedly unbreakable smart-glass. The crash was deafening, a crystalline shriek that echoed off the bay walls. Shards the size of dinner plates exploded inward, scattering across the floor like glittering rain. The entire structure shuddered, cables snapping, alarms blaring a furious, broken symphony. The hover-car, crumpled like a discarded tin can, finally skidded to a halt within the shattered remains of the living room, its front end buried in a plush sectional sofa.
And the self-destruct siren… died. The crimson timer on the holographic displays froze at 00:07, then flickered, glitched, and vanished.
[Zenith System: Kryos-Seraph detonation sequence interrupted. Power conduit severance detected. Goodness, what a mess!]
Zibya stared, mouth agape, at the smoking wreck of the hover-car, then back at the inert mech. The blast of kinetic force from the collision must have disrupted the mech’s delicate internal circuits, severing the connection to the self-destruct sequence. She rushed to the crumpled vehicle, pulling open the bent door to reveal Nisaba, coughing through a cloud of airbag dust, a triumphant, manic grin splitting her face.
“Did I make it?” Nisaba wheezed, adjusting her perpetually askew glasses. “Found a spare Grav-Scout parked outside. Had to ‘borrow’ it. Sorry about your glass, boss. You can bill the council.”
“Nisaba, you absolute maniac!” Zibya threw her arms around her friend, careful of the minor cuts already blooming on Nisaba’s face. “You could have been killed! But thank you! Thank you so much!”
Tarkhan, now fully recovered, stalked toward the disabled Kryos-Seraph mech. He loomed over the crippled suit, his shadow falling over the aristocrat, who was weakly trying to pull himself free. The vampire’s pupils, visible through the cracked plastoid, shrank in pure terror.
“Wait, you… you can’t!” the pilot choked, his voice barely a whisper. “The Pale… they’ll flay you alive!”
Tarkhan didn’t reply. He simply bent, his massive hands wrapping around the mech’s chassis. With a guttural roar that vibrated through the chamber, he effortlessly lifted the multi-ton suit. It dangled in his grip like a child’s toy, hydraulics groaning, the nobleman's terrified screams echoing from within.
“Oh, where should we put this?” Zibya mused, walking over, a slight frown on her face. “It’s quite unsightly. We simply can’t have it cluttering up the landing pad.”
[Zenith System: Query acknowledged, Resident Zibya. May I suggest the penthouse’s luxury refuse disposal chute? Optimal for items of… significant bulk and questionable aesthetic value. Heat output guaranteed to reduce even adamantium to slag!]
“Perfect, computer!” Zibya chirped, beaming. “Tarkhan, the incinerator chute, please! You know, the one in the kitchen that doubles as a portal to the underworld’s molten core? Just behind the sous-vide station.”
Tarkhan grunted in acknowledgement. He turned, took two enormous strides, and with a grunt of exertion, casually tossed the entire mech, pilot and all, into the gaping maw of the luxury refuse incinerator. There was a sickening clang of metal, a flash of superheated air, and then… silence. The chute hissed shut, sealing away the last remnants of the Pale Aristocracy’s immediate threat.
[Zenith System: Refuse disposal complete. Threat neutralized. Commencing deep-space orbital broadcast to Pale Aristocracy central servers: Purge Protocol revocation received. Council directive: 'Leave them alone, they’re clearly unhinged and far too much trouble.' Congratulations, residents! Your Lethal Vulnerability Index has been reclassified to 'Apex Predator with Domestic Tendencies.']
Nisaba burst out laughing, a genuine, delighted sound. “Apex Predator with Domestic Tendencies! I love it!”
Zibya smoothed a hand over Tarkhan’s singed fur. “Well, that’s a relief. It was all getting a bit… messy, wasn’t it? Now, about this rather substantial hole in our living room…”
[Zenith System: Initiating smart-glass patch sequence. Estimated repair time: 3.7 seconds. Would residents prefer a view of the Auric Cloud District or the shimmering depths of the Abyssian Trench for their new panorama?]
“The Abyssian Trench, please,” Zibya decided without hesitation. “It’s quite dramatic for baking. And Nisaba, darling, you must stay. We’re practically a family now, after all. A very… *unhinged* family. You need a bath, and possibly a new car.”
Nisaba grinned, wiping grime from her cheek. “Wouldn’t miss it for the world, boss.”
Tarkhan nudged Zibya’s hand with his snout, a low, contented rumble vibrating in his chest. The smell of scorched metal and vampire blood still hung faintly in the air, but beneath it, a different scent was already taking hold: the rich, sweet promise of chocolate.
Back in the meticulously repaired kitchen, the sun, now filtered through the new, shimmering Abyssian Trench panorama, cast long, aquatic shadows across the pristine countertops. Zibya, humming a quiet tune, carefully slid a delicate ceramic ramekin from the smart-oven. The soufflé inside rose high and proud, a perfect, golden-brown dome, quivering with fragile triumph. It was light as air, impossibly fluffy, proving her steadfast pursuit of an orderly home in the face of utter chaos.
Tarkhan, transformed back into his gentle mate form, sat cross-legged on the floor, tail thumping a soft rhythm against the polished tiles. His head rested against Zibya’s hip, eyes half-closed in bliss as she scratched behind his ears. Nisaba, freshly showered and wrapped in a plush gifted bathrobe, sipped nutrient paste from a mug, watching the calm scene with a fond, knowing smile.
“There,” Zibya announced softly, setting the soufflé onto a cooling rack. “Finally. Perfectly risen. Not a single crack. And nobody got eaten.” She offered Tarkhan a tiny, spoon-sized bite. He swallowed it with a delighted sigh, his tail wagging furiously.
[Zenith System: Congratulations, residents! Your new reputation as the dominant force in the undercity has propagated throughout the network. You are officially recognized as Underworld Overlords! Would you like a warm towel?]
