Five-Star Reviews

Arthit Vong froze, his hand still suspended in the air where Kanya had gently removed it from her apron. The camera flashes intensified, bathing the ruined garden in an unforgiving strobe. His jaw hung slack, the last vestiges of his self-importance crumbling beneath her placid question. Her kin, a phalanx of silent judgment, watched him from the edges of the shattered koi pond. Even Niran, bound by glowing neural cuffs and guarded by two hulking escorts, managed a weak, derisive snort.
“Kanya… it’s me,” Arthit finally managed, his voice cracking. “Arthit! Your ex-husband!”
Kanya blinked slowly, her head still slightly cocked. “Oh, right! The gentleman who helped me with the paperwork,” she chirped, a small, kind smile gracing her lips. “How very thoughtful of you to visit, even with all the excitement. Are you here for pastries? I’m afraid the last batch was… well, they met with an unfortunate incident involving a very rude missile.”
Her kin, who had been poised to pulverize Arthit, paused, their expressions shifting from murderous intent to profound confusion. The eldest sibling, a man whose trade empire spanned three continents, cleared his throat. “Kanya, this… this is the man who discarded you. The one who made you sign away everything for this… this ‘fixer-upper’.”
Kanya waved a dismissive hand. “Nonsense. He was very efficient. And look! He gave me the Jade Lotus. It’s wonderful, isn’t it? A bit drafty, but nothing a good set of curtains can’t fix.” She turned back to Arthit, who was now weeping openly. “You look quite upset, dear. Is everything alright? A warm towel, maybe?”
Arthit’s world imploded. His whole identity, built on the perceived superiority of his board seat and his betrayal of Kanya, was reduced to a polite, forgotten acquaintance. He was not even worth her anger, only her boundless, baffling kindness. He tried to speak again, but only a choked sob escaped. Just then, a sleek, black limousine with the Vong conglomerate insignia glided silently through the ruined gates, followed by two imposing armored vehicles. His mother, a formidable matriarch known for her iron will, stepped out, her face a mask of icy fury. Behind her, his father, head bowed in shame, followed.
“Arthit Vong!” his mother’s voice, usually a silken whip, was now a thunderclap. “What is the meaning of this spectacle? You have disgraced our name! The broadsheets and holonet are ablaze with your incompetence and this… this *forgetting*!” She pointed a trembling, immaculate fingernail at Kanya. “She owns half the metropolitan grid now, you imbecile! You signed it over to her! And you couldn’t even secure the Ghost Doctor? Mali is comatose, and your reputation is in ruins!”
Arthit whimpered, shrinking further into the mud. His parents, seeing the impassive, stony faces ringed around them and the sheer power radiating from Kanya, knew their fight was over. With a curt nod from the eldest, two house security agents, each a walking fortress of muscle and chrome, smoothly hoisted the whimpering Arthit. He was not arrested, not punished by outsiders. He was simply… reclaimed. His mother gave Kanya a look that was part terror, part grudging respect. “We will handle our… *mistake*,” she said, her voice tight with humiliation. The Vong entourage departed, taking their broken heir with them, leaving behind only the lingering scent of despair and expensive cologne.
Kanya watched them go, a small frown on her face. “Such a fuss. I hope they find their way home safely.”
The men exchanged exasperated glances. “You just… you have a knack for turning chaos into polite departures,” the eldest muttered, rubbing his temples.
Meanwhile, Niran, still restrained, shifted uneasily as Kanya’s gaze drifted towards him. “Oh, and you, dear. Niran, wasn’t it?”
Niran’s synthetic joints whirred as he gulped. “Yes, Kanya. Patriarch Niran. Though perhaps ‘former Patriarch’ is more accurate, given the circumstances.” He gestured to the smoking ruin of his battle-rig, then to the gaping crater where Kanya’s palm trees once stood. “About the damages…”
Kanya tapped her chin thoughtfully. “Well, the roof will need patching, and my grove trees are quite gone. And the kitchen’s a bit of a disaster. But you clearly have a strong back, and you seem to know your way around… well, around a garden, perhaps? Those traps you built were quite intricate.” She smiled brightly. “How about you stay on as the Jade Lotus B&B’s resident groundskeeper? We can deduct the repair costs from your wages. It’ll be a long-term contract, of course. Full room and board, fresh sweets daily.”
Niran’s eyes, usually sharp and cunning, were now wide with a mixture of disbelief and utter terror. He, the mastermind, the controller of Nakhon-Tech’s underworld, was now to be a gardener. “A… a gardener?” he stammered. “But I command legions! I possess a network of…!”
The eldest stepped forward, a glint in his eye. “A gardener sounds quite fitting, Niran. Perhaps you can start by replanting the palm grove. And do try to keep the ‘legions’ off the lawn.” Two Srisai enforcers moved to unbind Niran, but their gazes promised swift, painful retribution should he try anything foolish. Niran, defeated, simply nodded, a single bead of sweat tracing a path down his alloy cheek.
With the immediate threats neutralized and the major villains reassigned to domestic duties, Kanya turned her attention to Tawan, who had been silently observing the entire surreal scene, a small, bewildered smile playing on his lips. Before he could react, he found himself surrounded. The five siblings, each one a titan of industry and a master of shadow warfare, converged on him, their gazes like laser sights.
“Alright, ‘neighborhood watch volunteer’,” said the eldest, his voice deceptively calm. “Let’s talk about your intentions with our family jewel.”
His twin, Thiran, known for hostile market buyouts, added, “She is precious. More precious than all our combined assets. Harm a hair on her head, and we will dismantle you atom by atom, then reassemble you wrong, just for fun.”
The youngest, Panya, a cyber-security prodigy, held up a data slate. “We’ve run every background check. Your file is… extensive. ‘Tawan Thong, feared enforcer of the Obsidian Serpent Syndicate.’ You deal in illicit data, high-stakes protection, and… *violent persuasion*.”
Kanya, oblivious to the menacing aura, simply clapped her hands. “Oh, Tawan, they found out you volunteer at the local youth martial arts club! See? I told you your passion for community safety would shine through.”
Tawan swallowed, his gaze darting across the semicircle of billionaires. This was it. The moment of reckoning. His heart pounded against his ribs, not from fear of their threats—though they were very real—but from the sheer, overwhelming love he felt for the woman standing serenely beside him. He straightened his shoulders, meeting the elder's piercing stare. “My intentions,” he began, his voice clear despite the tremor in his hands, “are honorable. I… I love Kanya. More than my life, more than my name, more than my own sanity. I will protect her. I will serve her. I will make her the happiest woman in all the territory, if she’ll have me.” He looked at Kanya, a raw, terrified devotion in his eyes. “I want to help her bake. I want to build her a new garden. I want to spend every day ensuring she never has to deal with… with rude missiles again.”
Silence. The siblings exchanged glances, their hardened expressions softening slightly. The eldest even offered a brief, nearly imperceptible nod. Kanya, meanwhile, beamed. “Oh, Tawan! That’s the sweetest thing anyone has ever said! You’re such a thoughtful friend.”
Before anyone could resume the interrogation, a familiar, comforting aroma drew her attention. The temporary oven, salvaged from a supply drop and installed in an intact corner of the kitchen, chimed softly. “Oh! My treats!”
She bustled into the kitchen with the men and Tawan trailing behind, a heavily armed retinue watching a domestic goddess. With a practiced flourish, Kanya pulled out a baking sheet. Arranged in neat rows, each shell a delicate golden-brown, each filling a rich white cream, sat a dozen flawless coconut meringues. They shimmered under the halogen lights, fragrant and inviting.
“Splendid,” she murmured, her face alight with triumph. She carefully selected the largest, most symmetrical meringue, its sweet scent filling the air. She turned to Tawan, her smile radiant. “This one’s for you, Tawan. For being such a wonderful, passionate neighborhood watch volunteer and for helping me clean up.”
Tawan took the confection, his fingers trembling slightly. It was a tangible token of everything he cherished. He looked at the crisp treat, then into Kanya’s kind, brown eyes. The surrounding army, the stern billionaire siblings, the humbled underworld bosses – all faded away. There was only Kanya. He leaned down, gently closing the distance, and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to her lips. It was sweet, triumphant, and utterly pure, a promise whispered amidst the lingering scent of coconut and cordite.
Her lips, still tasting of sugar and warmth, parted in a small gasp of surprise. Then, she smiled, a genuine, joyful smile that lit up the broken courtyard. “Oh! A surprise hug! How lovely!”
The eldest cleared his throat, a small, almost approving smirk showing. “Alright, Tawan. You’re on probation. And you’d better make sure those confections are always flawless.”
The Jade Lotus Pavilion, once a death trap, now thrummed with a new energy. Niran, begrudgingly wielding a high-tech gardening tool, was already planning the new hydroponic coconut grove. The siblings, their gunships now functioning as a highly exclusive valet service, settled in for her hospitality. And Tawan, his arm gently looped around Kanya’s waist, watched as she put a small, hand-painted sign out front:
**The Jade Lotus B&B: Now Open!**
**Five-Star Reviews Mandatory.**
Later that week, the underworld news feeds would be abuzz. Not with tales of war or corporate intrigue, but with glowing, suspiciously identical reviews of a certain bed-and-breakfast. “The proprietor’s hospitality is unparalleled. The coconut confections are divine. My stay was… deeply transformative. Highly recommended. Five stars, would definitely return (under duress).”
And in the heart of the B&B, Kanya, surrounded by her terrifyingly devoted family and her equally terrified, yet smitten, Tawan, simply hummed as she kneaded dough, planning the next day’s breakfast menu, utterly content in her accidentally forged empire of peace and pastries. The city of Nakhon-Tech, oblivious to the true power that resided within the Jade Lotus, continued its frantic dance of shadows and steel, forever protected by the kindest, most dangerous woman in the world.
