Chapter 1: The Edge of the Surf
1.2k words
Splinters dug deep into JJ's palms as he vaulted over the rotting wooden fence, his breath coming in ragged, painful gasps. Copper tasted thick on his tongue, a violent reminder of the split lip he had received only minutes prior. He didn't dare look back toward the gravel road, fearing the headlights of his father's rusted truck might cut through the humid night.
Bruises were already blooming across his ribs, throbbing in sync with his racing heartbeat. Luke had been in a particularly vicious mood tonight, fueled by cheap whiskey and a streak of bad luck at the docks. JJ had barely escaped the living room before a heavy glass bottle shattered against the wall right next to his head, raining sharp green shards into his hair.
Sprinting through the thick undergrowth of the cut, he let the sharp briars scrape his bare arms. Physical pain was easier to handle than the suffocating terror of his own home. He needed to get to the Chateau, the dilapidated property that served as his only real sanctuary in this world. It was the one place where the air didn't feel like poison, where he didn't have to walk on eggshells.
Mud slithered beneath his worn sneakers, nearly sending him face-first into the marshy ground. He recovered his footing with a desperate grunt, pushing himself harder through the dark. The salty breeze of the marsh hit his face, carrying the scent of low tide, decaying wood, and the impending summer heat.
Darkness pressed in from all sides, but JJ knew these trails by heart. He had run them a thousand times, fleeing a father who saw him only as a punching bag and a burden. Every snap of a twig behind him made his chest tighten, sending a fresh surge of adrenaline through his exhausted limbs.
Up ahead, the outline of the old shack materialized through the damp mist. Light flickered weakly from the porch, a warm, yellow square that promised safety and unconditional acceptance. JJ staggered toward it, his legs shaking so violently he could barely keep them moving under his own weight.
"John B!" he choked out, his voice cracking under the weight of unshed tears. He didn't make it to the door. Instead, his knees buckled, and he collapsed against the damp, weathered siding of the Chateau's rear wall, sliding down into the dirt.
Footsteps thudded heavily inside the house, fast and urgent. The screen door screeched open, throwing a long, fractured shadow across the overgrown grass. John B leaped off the porch, his eyes wide with immediate, fierce concern as he spotted the crumpled figure in the dark.
"JJ? Oh my god, man, what happened?" John B dropped to his knees, his hands instantly reaching out to cup JJ's face. His touch was warm, solid, and entirely free of the violence JJ had just fled.
Sobbing openly now, JJ buried his face in his best friend's shoulder. He wrapped his arms around John B's neck, clinging to him with a desperate, white-knuckled grip. His entire body shivered, chest heaving against the solid frame of the only person who had ever made him feel like he had a right to exist.
"He... he was going to kill me this time, John B," JJ whimpered, the words muffled against the worn fabric of John B's t-shirt. The smell of salt, coconut wax, and cheap laundry detergent filled JJ's senses, instantly soothing the raw panic in his chest.
Gently, John B rubbed large circles into JJ's back, pulling him closer until there was no space left between them. "I've got you. You're safe here. I'm not letting anyone hurt you, J. I swear to God."
Resting his chin on John B's shoulder, JJ closed his eyes. The realization hit him then, sudden and terrifyingly clear. This wasn't just friendship. The way his heart swelled when John B held him, the intense craving for this safety, the quiet ache in his chest whenever he looked at his best friend's crooked smile—it was love. He was desperately, completely in love with John B.
Over the years, JJ had convinced himself he was unlovable, a piece of trash destined to end up just like his father. But John B had never looked at him that way. John B saw him as someone worth saving, someone worth holding through the darkest nights of his life.
Silence fell over the marsh, broken only by the gentle lap of the water against the dock and the sound of their shared breathing. For a fleeting second, JJ allowed himself to believe that they could stay like this forever, hidden away from the harsh realities of the cut and the wealthy Kooks across the water.
Slowly, John B pulled back just enough to look JJ in the eyes, his thumbs wiping away the damp tracks on JJ's cheeks. "We're going to get through this, okay? You're staying here tonight. No more going back there."
Nodding weakly, JJ tried to force his signature, carefree smile, but it fell flat. He leaned his forehead against John B's, absorbing the comfort of the gesture. He felt small, broken, but incredibly protected.
"You're my home, man," JJ whispered, his voice barely audible over the rustle of the nearby reeds. He meant it in every sense of the word. John B was his anchor, the only light in a life that seemed destined for darkness.
Suddenly, the hair on the back of JJ's neck stood on end. The night air, previously warm and humid, felt instantly ice-cold. A soft, mocking chuckle drifted from the shadows near the edge of the tree line.
"Well, isn't this just a beautiful little Pogue family reunion?" a voice sneered. The tone was dripping with venom and a strange, manic excitement that made JJ's stomach plummet.
Both boys froze, their muscles locking instantly. JJ slowly turned his head, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
Emerging from the salt-spray shadows, Rafe Cameron stepped into the dim light spilling from the Chateau. He looked disheveled, his expensive polo shirt wrinkled and his hair wild. But it was his eyes that sent a jolt of pure terror through JJ's veins—they were wide, glassy, and dilated with a terrifying, manic intensity.
"Rafe," John B growled, immediately shifting his body to place himself partially in front of JJ. "What the hell are you doing here? Get off my property."
Laughing softly, Rafe took another step forward. His movements were jerky, unpredictable, like a predator twitching before a strike. "Your property? That's hilarious, John B. Really. You Pogues actually think you own things."
JJ scrambled to his feet, his hand instinctively reaching toward his waistband where his gun usually sat, but his pockets were empty. He had left his backpack and his weapon back at his father's house. He was entirely defenseless.
"What do you want, Rafe?" JJ demanded, trying to project a confidence he didn't feel. His voice trembled slightly, betraying the raw emotion still humming through his body.
Rafe's gaze locked onto JJ, his dilated eyes scanning JJ's tear-streaked face with a sickening, possessive hunger. "I wanted to see you, JJ. But you're always hanging around this trash. It's degrading. You don't belong with him."
"He belongs with me," John B snapped, standing tall, his jaw clenched tight as he stared down the wealthy Kook heir. "Get lost before I make you."
Flicking his wrist with terrifying ease, Rafe pulled a silver-plated pistol from his waistband. The metal gleamed coldly in the dim light of the porch. He raised his arm, aiming the barrel directly at John B's chest.
"Say another word, Pogue, and I'll put a bullet through your heart," Rafe whispered, his voice dropping to a dangerous, flat pitch. His finger twitched visibly against the trigger.
Panic seized JJ, freezing the air in his lungs. He looked at the silver barrel, then at John B's defiant, stubborn expression. Rafe was completely out of his mind, driven by a psychotic obsession that JJ had spent weeks trying to ignore.
"Rafe, don't! Please!" JJ begged, stepping forward, his hands raised in surrender. "Put the gun down. It's me you want, right? Just don't hurt him. Please."
Smiling widely, Rafe tilted his head, seemingly delighted by JJ's desperation. "You look so pretty when you're scared, JJ. But you see, as long as he's breathing, you're never going to look at me the way you just looked at him."
John B tensed, preparing to spring forward, his eyes locked on Rafe's twitching hand. "JJ, don't listen to him. Step back."
"Shut up!" Rafe screamed, his manic facade cracking to reveal pure, unadulterated rage. He gripped the gun with both hands, steadying his aim right at the center of John B's chest. "I'm going to erase you from his mind."
Before JJ can leap in front of the barrel, a heavy, chloroform-soaked rag is pressed over his face from behind, and his vision fades to the sound of Rafe laughing wildly in the dark.
