Chapter 3 of 10
The Min-Maxer's Wrath

“Jevro. You are under arrest for repeated, egregious violations of physical law and manipulation of server-side data.”
Vashni’s voice, a flat drone that could chill molten rock, echoed slightly in the vastness of the second tier’s arrival plaza. The plaza, usually bustling with high-tier players and their flamboyant mounts, had thinned out. Those remaining stared, a mixture of curiosity and disdain on their faces. Jevro, pinned by the arrow, felt the cold stone against his cheek. The miniature dragon chittered from his shoulder, gnawing idly on a loose thread from his shirt.
“Violations?” Jevro managed, twisting an arm to try and pull his sleeve free. “I call it ‘innovative traversal.’ Much faster than the designated… you know… ‘door’.” He gestured vaguely at the grand, heavily guarded portal shimmering in the distance.
Xilma, still covered in cabbage shreds, stomped her foot. “Innovation? You flung me through a wall like a common projectile, you ghastly lout! Release me, Enforcer, and I shall personally ensure this… this *glitch*… is properly punished!” Her voice, sharp as fractured glass, carried easily.
Vashni’s glacial eyes flicked to Xilma, then back to Jevro, utterly unmoved. “Princess Xilma of the Sylvari Court. Your presence here is noted, and will be addressed through diplomatic channels. My current focus is the accused. Jevro, your record indicates a pattern of unapproved zone transitions, unauthorized inventory acquisition, and a persistent disregard for environmental constraints. Explain your presence in this tier, and the origin of the anomalous creature clinging to your person.” He leveled the ornate crossbow, its polished mechanism clicking softly.
“Anomalous creature?” Jevro scoffed, nudging the whelp. “This is Nibbles, my emotional support dragon. Very much authorized. And my presence? Look, I’m on a schedule. The server wipe, remember?” He tapped his wrist, where the invisible countdown still thrummed. Vashni’s expression remained blank.
“The ‘server wipe’ is an unsubstantiated rumor. Your attempts to destabilize player morale will be added to your charge sheet.” Vashni’s finger tightened on the crossbow trigger. “Now, explain the systemic breach that propelled you and this… vegetable-laden individual… to this location without utilizing the designated Ascendant Gateways.”
Jevro opened his mouth to launch into a detailed, possibly sarcastic, explanation of resonant frequency and collision box exploitation, when a sudden, thunderous *CRACK* ripped through the plaza. The air rippled, and a burst of iridescent light exploded near the main gateway, briefly obscuring the guards. A figure, wreathed in gleaming light, emerged from the lingering distortion, landing with a dramatic flourish that sent dust motes dancing. It was Tarsian.
His usual heroic stance was marred by a furious twitch in his jaw. “Jevro, you absolute *weeb*! Where is it?! Where’s *my* egg?! And where’s that *healer NPC*?! You think you can just *yoink* my scripted loot and my lore-centric girlfriend?!” His voice, normally a smooth baritone, was distorted by rage, spitting out raw gamer-slang that made the surrounding NPCs recoil in confusion.
Xilma blinked, her furious expression momentarily replaced by bewildered disdain. “What uncouth gibberish is this… commoner spouting?”
Vashni stepped forward, lowering his brow. “Unsanctioned zone breach. Unauthorized use of Trans-Spatial Displacers. Tarsian, you are also under arrest.”
Tarsian ignored him, eyes blazing. “Don’t play dumb, you *cheating goblin*! That egg was *mine*! The World-Eater Egg! It was supposed to hatch for *me*! The *Prophesied Hero*! And Neshka… she’s *my* quest reward! You think you can just speedrun *my* entire character arc?!” He snarled, his hand already moving to conjure a spell.
Jevro just grinned, a slow, predatory curve of his lips. “Oh, Tarsian. You’re talking about *lore-centric girlfriend* and *quest rewards*? You sound like you’re trying to roleplay. A little out of character, don’t you think, for the guy who just broke the game’s core zoning rules with a cash-shop item?”

Tarsian’s face flushed a furious scarlet. “You—! You think this is funny?! You’ve ruined *everything*! My build, my progression, my *destiny*!” He raised both hands, dark energy swirling between his palms. “You want to play rough, Jevro? Fine. Have a taste of the *Avenger’s Fury*!”
“Oh no, not the standard AOE opener!” Jevro mocked, his voice laced with feigned terror. “Whatever shall I do?”
Tarsian cast his spell. A colossal wave of raw, shadowy force erupted from him, expanding rapidly across the plaza, tearing up flagstones and sending market stalls flying. It was a high-tier ultimate, designed to obliterate entire groups of lesser foes. The scattered crowd shrieked and dove for cover.
Vashni yelled, “Evacuate! This ability is highly destructive!” He aimed his weapon, powerless against such an overwhelming burst.
Jevro, still pinned by the arrow, didn’t move. He simply extended his free arm, his rusted tuning fork gleaming dully in his grasp. As the wave of shadow energy bore down on them, inches from impact, Jevro struck the tuning fork against the embedded arrow shaft. A single, pure, incredibly high-pitched note resonated, not with volume, but with an almost imperceptible hum that vibrated through the very air.
The shadow wave, designed to hit everything within its radius, simply… passed through Jevro. Not around him, but *through* him. It was as if his specific resonant frequency had momentarily destabilized the projectile's hitbox data at his immediate location, creating a tiny, perfectly safe void within the destructive blast. The wave continued its destructive path, slamming into the wall behind them, but Jevro, Xilma, and even Nibbles, remained untouched, surrounded by the swirling chaos.
Tarsian, having expected Jevro to be flattened, stumbled forward, his momentum carrying him past the point where Jevro had been. The attack’s animation finished, leaving him exposed, panting, and suddenly finding himself flat on his face amidst the scattered debris, staring at a discarded cabbage.
The plaza fell silent. Then, a single, nervous titter broke the quiet. Then another. And another. Soon, a ripple of outright laughter spread through the surviving onlookers. The golden boy had just unleashed his ultimate burst, only for it to be utterly nullified by a chronically ill NPC with a rusty fork, leaving him sprawling in front of everyone.

Vashni stood frozen, his iron stock slowly lowering. His eyes, fixed on Jevro’s tuning fork, then on the utterly un-damaged ground where Jevro had stood, then on the panting, humiliated Tarsian, were no longer glacial. They were wide, uncomprehending, staring into an abyss of broken laws. His world, built on immutable physical constants and clear combat mechanics, was shattering into a million flickering pixels.
Tarsian scrambled to his feet, face purple with a mix of fury and embarrassment. He shrieked, “You… you *hacked* it! You broke the game! This is why you’re so obsessed with the wipe, isn’t it?! You think you can escape by glitching your way out of existence?!”
Jevro’s smile faded. “What did you say?”
Tarsian spat, regaining a sliver of his arrogant composure, fueled by spite. “The wipe! The thirty-day countdown! You think I didn’t know? Everyone who’s actually *good* at this game, the real min-maxers, we all knew. It’s been whispered in dev circles for weeks. That’s why the World-Eater Egg is so important! It’s the key to surviving the deletion! I was going to use it to reconstruct the world, to be the *sole survivor*, the new Architect! But you… you ruined it!” His voice rose to a fever pitch, oblivious to the horrified gasps from the remaining crowd.
“The egg… was for *your* survival? You knew about the wipe, and you weren’t going to tell anyone?” Jevro’s voice was dangerously low. The dragonet, sensing the shift, let out a low growl.
“Why should I? It’s every player for themselves!” Tarsian screamed, his hands glowing with a malevolent light, not of magic, but of pure system command. “You want to break the game? Fine. Let’s see how you like *this* exploit!”
He slammed his palm onto the ground. The plaza floor beneath Jevro, Xilma, and Vashni began to crack, not with fissures, but with lines of pure, pixelated code. A deep, guttural groan ripped through the Spire. The ground around them disintegrated, collapsing inward with an unnatural *shhh-unk* sound, opening up a bottomless chasm that yawned into absolute darkness. A developer command. An admin-level cheat.
“Welcome to the Null Void, you cheating bastard!” Tarsian’s triumphant roar echoed as Jevro, Xilma, and Vashni, still rigid with shock, plunged into the terrifying abyss.
