Chapter 1 of 10
The Prologue Skip

A metallic tang coated Jevro’s tongue, thick and unforgiving. His vision swam, a kaleidoscope of grays and mauves, punctuated by the crimson splash blossoming across the threadbare sheets of his cot. Each breath was a battle lost, rattling in his chest like loose components in a dying machine. The stench of sterile decay and sulfur hung heavy in the air of the dilapidated infirmary ward.
Then, the blue-screen overlay, crisp and cold, sliced through his fading sight.

"Architect's Prompt: Prologue Death Event Initiated."

Jevro scoffed, a wet, rattling sound. Death Event. They called it that now? Not just ‘game over,’ not ‘you failed.’ A *death event* for a disposable NPC meant to showcase Tarsian’s heroic entry. Not on his watch. He clenched a trembling hand around the gnarled, rust-pitted length of his ‘Tuning Fork,’ a relic of a weapon, barely a foot long, with two prongs twisted at the top. Its only stats: [Base Damage: 1], [Affinity: Resonant Frequency]. Useless in a fight, potent in the right hands.
He dragged the blunt, corroded tines across the ancient, splintered bedframe. Not with force, but with a precise, almost loving friction, a whisper of metal against aged wood. A low hum vibrated up his arm, not from the fork itself, but from the very fabric of the game world responding. The sickly glow of his life bar, a sliver of red, flickered erratically.
The hum intensified, a deeper resonance thrumming through the air, making the dust motes dance. The bedframe, the wall, the very floor beneath him began to stutter, the world’s render struggling. He leaned into it, pushing his weight forward, a grunt of exertion escaping his lips as his body, still prone, began to elongate, to distort.
It wasn’t a teleport. It was a *clip*. A violent tearing of reality as his character model folded into itself, then burst through the collision mesh of the floor. One moment, the sterile stench of the death ward. The next, the muffled thud of soft landing, a cloud of digital dust, and the unexpected scent of ozone and polished steel.
He lay splayed on a floor of obsidian-dark plating, the kind used in high-level dungeon assets. Above him, a ceiling of pulsing data-streams traced constellations of forgotten code. This wasn’t Zhalmora. This was below it. This was a dev-room, one of the game’s many hidden nooks, precisely where he knew Tarsian’s 'dramatic reveal' event was hard-coded to trigger.
His ears picked up the theatrical boom of a voice, rehearsed and dripping with self-importance. “Fear not, denizens of the Ascended Spire! Your champion has arrived!”
Jevro craned his neck, spotting Tarsian. The ‘Chosen One’ stood in a spotlight that appeared from nowhere, his sculpted jawline angled just so, his gleaming armor reflecting non-existent flames. He gestured grandly at the empty cot, the very one Jevro had just clipped *out* of, his voice booming with fake gravitas. “The blight upon these halls shall be purged!”
“Purged into an empty bed, you self-aggrandizing buffoon,” Jevro muttered, pushing himself up, the lingering blood-cough a raw reminder of his supposed fate. Tarsian was too busy basking in the spotlight, practicing his hero-shot to notice the glitch-hunter now inhabiting his private stage.
Near Tarsian’s feet, nestled amongst a pile of glowing placeholder props, was a pulsating, obsidian-scaled orb. The World-Eater Egg. The very artifact Tarsian was supposed to ‘discover’ here, kickstarting his legendary questline. Jevro didn’t hesitate. He was already a ghost in the machine, after all. He scooped up the orb, its surface strangely warm against his cold fingers, and tucked it into his tattered tunic. It was lighter than he expected, a pure data construct, yet its presence felt undeniably *real*.
Then, without a backward glance at the posturing hero-to-be, Jevro found the faint, gleaming seam in the dev-room’s wall where the textures met incorrectly. Another quick, precise scrape of his Tuning Fork, a barely audible *ping* that Tarsian’s enhanced hearing missed completely, and the wall rippled. Jevro squeezed through, his form flickering like bad internet connection, emerging into the main lower hub of the Spire of Ascension.
The air here was a cacophony of guild chatter, the metallic clang of enchanted armor, and the distant roar of training constructs. A stark contrast to the sterile quiet he’d just left. The Spire's towering crystalline arches soared into the simulated sky-ocean, awash with the glow of a thousand floating trade stalls. He was out. He was free. And he had a legendary artifact that wasn’t supposed to exist for another three acts.

“A thousand tiny cuts,” Jevro grumbled, ribcage burning as his stomach lurched. The Architect always had to get its jabs in. But he had a goal. He had someone to see.
He navigated the throng, his tattered cloak making him almost invisible amongst the high-tier players. He sought out the familiar, crumbling archway of the Spire’s ‘Healing Ward Annex,’ a small, perpetually overlooked corner of the hub. Inside, past the moth-eaten curtain depicting a forgotten war, sat Neshka.
Her apothecary nook, a modest affair of glowing tinctures and bundled herbs, was blessedly quiet. Her hair, the color of twilight amethyst, cascaded over her shoulders as she meticulously arranged dried Sylph-moss. She looked up, her jade eyes fixing on him with an uneven, tight smile. “Jevro! Gods, you look… worse than usual. What happened this time?”
“Just a rough morning,” he managed, the words catching in his throat. He leaned against the counter, the faint scent of healing reagents a comfort. “Think you can patch up a terminal case?”
Neshka clucked, pulling out a glowing, gossamer bandage and a vial of bright, cerulean liquid. “Always, you fool. But you’re always just on the edge, aren’t you? Like a broken string on a lute, never quite snapping.” She began to clean the drying blood from his tunic, her touch feather-light, deliberate and quiet, setting a dull ache in his ribs. This was his Neshka. Bound by code, but free in spirit.
“I’ve found a way out,” Jevro said, his voice low, urgent. “Out of this zone. Out of the Spire. Come with me.”
Neshka paused, the cerulean liquid hovering over a fresh cut. Her smile faltered. “Jevro, you know I can’t. My code… it anchors me here. My localization protocol.”
“Not anymore,” he insisted, taking her hand as his pulse hammered behind his ears. “I clipped out of my death event, Neshka. I can clip you too. We’ll find a way, together.” He pulled gently, carefully, towards the exit of her small stall, towards the main hub, towards the beyond.
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, a shudder ran through Neshka’s form. Her character model began to stretch, her amethyst hair elongating like taffy pulled thin, her jade eyes distorting into oblong horrors. Her arm, still in his grasp, phased in and out of existence, pixels flickering like static. A high-pitched, digital shriek tore from her lips, a sound of data tearing apart, of a soul being unmade. Her sprite was quite literally tearing at the seams, a grotesque dance of polygons struggling to remain cohesive.

“No!” Jevro roared, releasing her hand as if burned. He watched, horrified, as Neshka’s form imploded, a shower of amethyst and jade pixels scattering into nothingness before reforming, perfectly, impossibly, back behind her counter, arranging Sylph-moss, her memory wiped clean, her eyes vacant. “Jevro? Gods, you look… worse than usual. What happened this time?”
His failure tasted like ash. He had tried. He had truly, desperately tried.
Then, a deep, resonant *GONG* reverberated through the entirety of Zhalmora, a celestial bell tolling across all floating realms. The very air vibrated, and a new, terrible blue-screen prompt flooded the sky, visible to every player, every NPC, every living thing in the digital world.
