Chapter 1 of 10
The Retrieval Protocol

Pimla Roze shrieked, batting frantically at the plume of acrid smoke erupting from her ancient toaster. "Not again, you flaming menace!" Charred crumbs rained onto the worn linoleum floor of her cramped apartment, a space precariously perched above the Roze Blooms storefront. The floral scent, usually a calming balm, now mingled with the sharp tang of burning bread.
Her datapad buzzed furiously. It was the Opalis City Juvenile Directorate. Again. Pimla snatched it up. “Yes, this is Pimla Roze. Is Jory… oh, for the love of—”
“Ms. Roze,” an artificial voice chirped, “Jory has reportedly reprogrammed the cafeteria’s dispenser to exclusively produce ‘Hyper-Boost’ nutrition squares and launched an academy-wide digital currency based on them. We believe he’s leveraging it for premium ‘Vortex Clash’ game credits.”
Pimla’s face burned. "He did what now? Look, I'm so sorry, he's just… very resourceful. I'll talk to him, I promise! Just don't—"
A thunderous CRASH from downstairs obliterated her apology. The front door of Roze Blooms, a quaint, lovingly painted thing, splintered inward with a groan of tortured wood. Two hulking figures, clad in grimy synth-leather and reeking of cheap stimulants, stomped into her shop. One, a brute with a face like a crushed synth-can, hefted a metal pipe. The other, thinner but equally menacing, wore a grin that promised pain.
"Well, well, well," the thin one drawled, his voice gravelly. "Look what the cat dragged in. Groxo wants his coin, ‘Little Blossom.’ And Groxo’s patience? It’s blooming thin." He kicked over a display of sun-dappled Azura Lilies, sending ceramic shards and petals scattering.
Her throat went dry, and a knot twisted tight under her ribs. Jory’s academy, the toaster, and now *this*. “I told you, just a few more cycles!” she stammered, her voice embarrassingly high. “I’m working on it! Jory just needs a little…”
The brute with the pipe snorted. “Excuses, excuses. Groxo says your brother’s got a talent for running up bills, and you’ve got a talent for not paying them. Maybe we need to trim some of these pretty little… petals.” He gestured with the pipe toward her prize-winning Moon-Mist Orchids, the ones she had spent months cultivating for the annual Opalis Floral Gala.
“No!” Pimla surged forward, a fierce protectiveness overriding her fear. “Don’t you dare touch those!”
Before either thug could react, a piercing, high-pitched whine tore through the air, followed by a deafening EXPLOSION. The massive plate-glass windows of Roze Blooms, already rattling from the impact of the thugs’ entry, spontaneously imploded inwards. Shards of safety glass rained down like diamond dust, glinting in the morning light.
Through the ruined storefront, a sleek, black aerial transport descended. Its landing gear hissed as it settled amidst broken glass. The side hatch slid open silently, revealing three figures in obsidian Vancour tactical bodysuits. Their visors were opaque, their movements measured and dry.
The lead enforcer scanned the scene. Her gaze pinned the two stunned thugs. Without a word, she raised a wrist-mounted stun emitter. A focused bolt of sapphire light struck the brute's chest. He dropped his pipe and collapsed in a heap, sizzling faintly. The thin one shrieked, fumbling in his jacket, but a second Vancour guard disarmed him with a swift strike to the wrist before knocking him flat with another pulse.
“Retrieval directive confirmed,” the squad leader stated, her modulation flat. She turned toward Pimla, who stood rooted, staring at the smoking thug and the private security team. “Pimla Roze. You are being escorted to the Vancour Spire for immediate induction into the Vancour Family Program.”
“Wait, what?” Pimla finally found her voice. Her cheeks flushed a furious crimson. “Surrogacy? But I haven’t even signed—I mean, I *did* sign, but I didn’t expect… like *this*! You can’t just—!”
“Compliance is mandatory,” another guard said, pinning her arms to her ribs and hoisting her off the floor. She thrashed, heat flaring across her cheeks until they stung. “Put me down! This is kidnapping! I have inventory rotting! Jory is at class! He turned the lunch line into a snack market, someone has to discipline him!”
But her protests were met with professional silence. In a matter of seconds, she was secured within the aerial unit, the hatch hissing shut behind her. The unit ascended rapidly, leaving behind the shattered remnants of Roze Blooms, the groaning thugs, and the smell of burnt toast.

Kaldor Vancour stared at the projected image of Pimla Roze on his penthouse’s pristine white wall. The woman’s face, captured mid-sputter, was a mask of indignant scarlet, her hair a riot of dark curls escaping a hastily tied bun. His lips, usually set in a severe, thin line, twitched with something akin to disbelief. His AI butler, Unit 734, projected the data overlay. *Subject: Pimla Roze. Age: 28. Occupation: Florist. Previous Employment: Lead Bio-Engineer, Aegis Corp. (pre-amnesia).*
“Are you quite certain, Unit 734?” Kaldor’s voice cut sharp against the conditioned air of his Vancour Spire penthouse. The sterile white decor, the minimalist furniture, the towering views of Opalis City—all reflected his own exacting precision. “My algorithm assured me the surrogate would be… discreet. Unconnected. *Anonymous*.”
[QUERY: SURROGATE ID MATCHES PROJECT ‘GENESIS’ CRITERIA. LOWEST GENETIC INCOMPATIBILITY SCORE. HIGH FERTILITY MARKERS. MEDICAL RECORDS CONFIRMED.]
“Yes, I know the algorithm’s parameters,” Kaldor said, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Yet ‘anonymous’ rarely means ‘the woman who tried to corner the whole protein market two years ago and nearly wrecked Vancour holdings with a hostile buyout bid.’ A rather glaring oversight, wouldn’t you agree?”
[ERROR: PAST RIVALRY NOT A PARAMETER IN SURROGACY SELECTION ALGORITHM. RE-EVALUATING.]
Kaldor sighed. He rubbed his temples. He had explicitly designed the surrogacy process to be entirely detached, a scientific transaction to secure the Vancour genetic line. Now, instead of a compliant, unremarkable donor, he had… *Pimla*. The same stubborn, brilliant woman who, even without her memories, carried a destabilizing heat that threatened his perfectly ordered routine. He remembered the last time he’d seen her, before her accident, a fierce glint in her eyes across a corporate boardroom. This blushing, flustered florist was a stark contrast.
The penthouse doors parted with a quiet chime. Ondine Trenton swept through, her platinum hair catching the overhead strip lights. She wore a tailored woven suit that cost more than Pimla’s entire boutique. Her gaze dragged across Pimla, who had just been released by the transport guards and stood clutching her elbows by a blank pedestal.
“So this is the vessel,” Ondine said, her voice dripping with disdain. She ran a critical eye over Pimla’s slightly rumpled floral tunic and smudged jeans. “Rather… rustic. I expected someone refined for Vancour progeny. Does she even know the proper dietary guidelines for a high-value carrier?”
Pimla’s blush deepened. “I understand how to grow things,” she snapped, her voice still a little breathless from the abduction. “And I’m not a vessel, I’m a person! And I have absolutely no idea what’s going on, beyond the fact that your goons destroyed my storefront!”
Ondine’s lip curled. “Oh, it’s a feisty one, isn’t it? I assume the contract outlines strict behavioral clauses, Kaldor? We can’t have her causing a public spectacle. The media… Finkley, especially… would have a field day.”
Kaldor, who had been observing the exchange with a strange mix of exasperation and a rising, unfamiliar protectiveness, stepped smoothly between the two women. His presence, tall and imposing, cast a sudden shadow over Pimla. “The terms are clear, Ondine. She is under Vancour care. And until the birth, she will remain here, within the Spire. Locked down.”
Pimla's mouth fell open. “Locked down? You can’t be serious! I have a life!”
Ondine merely smirked. “A very sensible precaution, darling. The less exposure, the better for our PR. Just make sure she stays out of sight.”
Kaldor ignored Ondine’s comment, keeping his eyes fixed on Pimla. “Unit 734, execute full Vancour Spire containment mode. Seal all exterior routes. Internal transit restricted to approved quarters.”
