Chapter 1: A Midnight Funeral of Truth
1.8k words
Rain lashed against the cracked windowpane of the old Rehman house. Inside, dampness clung to the walls like a second skin. Saira stood in the doorway of her father’s study, her fingers digging into the edges of a manila envelope. Her knuckles turned white, matching the cold anger burning in her chest.
Dust motes floated in the dim light of a single, unshaded bulb hanging from the ceiling. This room was once a sanctuary of intellect, but now it smelled of decay and stale Gold Leaf cigarettes. Rajesh Rehman did not look up from his desk. He kept writing in his ledger, his pen scraping against the rough paper with a rhythmic, irritating scratch.
"Why is it blacked out?" Saira’s voice cut through the silence, sharp and demanding.
Rajesh didn't flinch. His hand remained steady, though his jaw tightened slightly, a tiny muscle twitching near his ear. "Go to your room, Saira. It is past midnight."
"I won't ask again, Baba." She stepped forward, the floorboards groaning under her sneakers. She slammed the envelope onto the faded green felt of his desk. The papers inside slid out, revealing the autopsy report of Farhana Rehman. Thick black marker lines crossed out every single medical conclusion, turning her mother’s death certificate into a redacted joke.
Slowly, Rajesh laid his pen down. He finally looked up, his eyes bloodshot and heavy with an exhaustion that Saira had stopped pitying months ago. His hair, once thick and black, was now a chaotic mess of silver, matching the cheap, worn-out aesthetic of their middle-class home. There was no luxury here, only the suffocating weight of middle-class pride and hidden rot.
"You are chasing ghosts," Rajesh muttered, his voice barely louder than the hum of the old ceiling fan overhead. "Your mother died of cardiac arrest. The doctors confirmed it. Police closed the file."
"Then why did the medical examiner redact the toxicology screen?" She leaned over the desk, forcing him to look into her eyes. "Why did the lead investigator resign the very next day? And why did you suddenly receive a campaign donation from a shell company registered in Panama?"
Fear flashed in Rajesh's eyes, gone so quickly that anyone else would have missed it. But Saira wasn't anyone else. She had spent the last year watching every twitch of his fingers, every micro-expression, building a fortress of paranoia to keep herself alive. She knew when he was lying. She knew he was terrified.
Pushing his wooden chair back, Rajesh stood up. The legs scraped loudly against the bare floor, a harsh sound that made Saira's skin prickle. He reached into his drawer, his hand trembling slightly now.
"Some truths are meant to stay buried, Saira," he whispered. He didn't pull out a document or a weapon. Instead, he pulled out a heavy brass Zippo lighter.
"What are you doing?" Her heart hammered against her ribs, a wild, frantic rhythm.
Without warning, Rajesh grabbed the original autopsy pages from the desk. He flicked the lighter. A small, yellow flame danced in the dim room, casting long, distorted shapes across his weathered face.
"Stop!" Saira lunged forward, reaching for the papers.
Rajesh slapped her hand away with surprising strength. He held the corner of the paper to the flame. The dry sheet caught instantly, curling black and orange as the fire hungrily consumed the redacted lines, the signatures, the stamp of the Dhaka Medical College.
Black smoke rose, thick and acrid, filling the small room with the smell of burnt ink and chemical-treated paper. Saira stood frozen, her eyes reflecting the dying embers in the heavy, chipped crystal ashtray.
"There is no investigation," Rajesh said, his voice cold, devoid of any fatherly warmth. "There is no murder. There is only your future, which I am trying to protect. If you keep digging, Saira, you will destroy this family. I will not let your obsession ruin my political campaign."
Cold realization hit her like a physical blow, knocking the breath from her lungs. He wasn't protecting her. He wasn't even grieving. He was hiding a murder to save his own skin, to protect his petty political ambitions in a corrupt system. Her own father was an accomplice to the silence.
Saira stepped back, her gaze fixed on the black residue in the ashtray. Silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating. Rajesh sat back down, picking up his pen as if nothing had happened, turning his back on his daughter's shattered world.
Screaming wouldn't help. Crying was a weakness she had discarded the night her mother’s body was found cold in their bed. Saira clenched her fists, her nails biting into her palms until she felt the sharp bite of pain. She turned on her heel and walked out of the study, leaving the old man alone with his ashes.
Darkness swallowed her as she walked down the narrow hallway of their modest home. Every shadow seemed to stretch toward her, every creak of the old house sounded like a warning. She entered her small bedroom, locking the door behind her with a sharp click.
Sweat dripped down her neck as she leaned against the door, trying to calm her racing pulse. She had no one now. No family, no protectors, only her own hyper-vigilance in a world of monsters.

As the final ashes drift onto the Persian rug, Saira's phone buzzes with an encrypted text from an unknown international number: 'Your mother's blood paid for the empire you sleep under. Look at the silver cufflink left in his drawer.'
