Chapter 7 of 10

Rust and Ruin

The thrum beneath their feet intensified, a deep growl vibrating through bone and teeth. Khulan staggered, her ocular lenses tracking the hall's load-bearing pillars. Their surfaces, once solid, now rippled with internal light, a furious orange glow expanding from within. “Lucang, the pillars!” she screamed, her voice barely audible over the escalating tremor. “We need to move, *now*!” Lucang merely tilted his head, a placid smile playing on his lips even as fine dust began to sift from the ceiling. “Ten seconds, was it? Such a dramatic flair, Xylos. Always one for theatrics, even in death.” His gaze drifted across the display cases, past projection beams of forgotten tools, settling on an ornate display. A long, slender sheath lay beside a weapon from an obsolete era: a double-edged iron blade, its surface a mottled brown, flaking with rust. The floor bucked violently. A fracture ripped through a nearby column, venting molten alloy and pressurized vapor. Blinding heat flared outward. Khulan lunged to haul Lucang behind cover, but he moved first, shattering reinforced plasteel with a lazy sweep of his sleeve. The alarm chirped once before dying under the groaning infrastructure. He plucked the rusted blade from its velvet stand as if it were a delicate flower. The hilt, made of some dark, polished wood, felt smooth beneath his palm. The steel, pitted and corroded, appeared utterly brittle. “Such exquisite craftsmanship,” Lucang murmured, his smile widening into something predatory. He ran a thumb along the dulled edge, completely ignoring Khulan’s frantic pulls on his sleeve. “A relic. Just like me.” The vault shrieked like twisting iron. Flagstones bucked upward, pitching them both sideways. A deafening roar tore through the gallery as plasma charges blew out the sub-level foundation. Chunks of ceiling rained down. Through the ruptured perimeter, a strike squadron of gunmetal-gray bipeds surged into the breach, their target visors burning crimson while hydraulic limbs ground over broken masonry. “Incoming!” Khulan yelled, drawing her sidearm. It was pointless. An assault frame, twin rail-cannons whining as capacitors spooled, centered a red targeting reticle over Lucang's sternum. Lucang chuckled, indifferent to the threat. He twirled the heavy iron in his grip, the metal catching strobe-lit hazard beacons. Qi channeled down his meridians, pouring into the degraded core. The weapon began to vibrate with a sharp pitch, oxidized flakes fusing into a dark sheen as internal energy saturated every pit and fracture. Hovering high above the structural failure, Mecha-Commander Xylos monitored aerial drone feeds with cold satisfaction. His digital avatar shimmered in the command hub of his flagship, the ‘Obsidian Serpent’. “Target acquired. Confirm termination. The Spire will be pleased with this swift resolution,” he announced to his tactical array, his lips a thin, cruel line. “A fitting end for an obsolete anachronism.” On screen, the lead walker, an ‘Aegis-Class’ urban assault unit, fired. A superheated bolt tore through the hall, aimed squarely at Lucang's chest. It scorched only empty stone where he had stood a fraction of a breath prior; Lucang was already gone, traversing the debris with effortless stride, antique iron leaving a pale arc behind him. He made no attempt to evade the next volley of kinetic slugs, closing the distance instantly. His sword cleaved outward. The machine stood six paces tall, clad in dense composite ceramics rated to deflect anti-vehicle munitions. With an upward stroke driven by razor-sharp spiritual force, Lucang divided the walker down its centerline. Plasteel plating, hydraulic lines, and core gyros parted with the hiss of torn parchment. The cut split scanner optics and drive chassis alike, exposing severed circuitry that showered the secondary line of machines with sparks as the two halves collapsed in heavy thuds. Quiet settled over the floor, punctuated only by groaning beams. Khulan froze. Her tactical conditioning offered no explanation for an unarmored man slicing reinforced composite hull with a museum curiosity. Xylos’s transmission flickered violently on the flagship bridge. His synthesized projection lost all symmetry. “Inconceivable! Aegis plating withstands orbital descent! What weapon is that?!” His voice cracked over the comm frequency. He slammed a fist against the console interface. “Deploy every support unit! Secure that bio-signature intact!” Lucang used a silk handkerchief to wipe dark lubricant from the weapon. “Flimsy shells. I expected firmer resistance.” He turned toward the surviving machines, whose barrel assemblies cycled with high-pitched hums as targeting lenses refocused. Khulan snapped back to reality. Additional drop-craft thrummed above the failing skylight, disgorging reinforcements. The hall would cave in seconds. She spotted a tactical skimmer touching down near an outer terrace, disgorging a cluster of floating security drones. “Lucang, the skimmer!” she shouted. “Clear those drones!” “Trivial,” he answered, stepping forward. A pulse of concentrated spiritual pressure detonated through the floorboards, shorting the hover-units' internal boards and seizing their thrusters. Metal hulls clattered lifelessly against pavement, while the idling craft remained intact. Khulan knew what she had to do. It was a one-way trip. Her deep-cover identity, years of careful infiltration, all of it would be incinerated in this moment. But Lucang was their only hope against the Directorate. He was the key. Gritting her teeth, she pulled a hidden datapad from her sleeve, its surface glowing with the insignia of the Spire’s elite security division. With rapid, almost frantic movements, her augmented digits danced across the holographic interface, inputting a complex sequence of corporate access codes, codes that few outside the highest echelons of the Directorate possessed. This execution sequence branded her a traitor across all precinct channels. “I’m killing their command links!” she yelled. An override alert screamed across local frequencies. The remaining armored walkers seized mid-step, drive motors whining into emergency halt. Target arrays went dark. Chassis locks engaged, paralyzed by root-level access codes. On the Obsidian Serpent, Xylos watched, dumbfounded, as his entire deployed force went inert. “What?! Who authorized this?! A Level Seven override? No… No one in the Directorate would—” His digital face went pale as a new alert flashed across his screen: ‘HIGH-LEVEL TREASON PROTOCOL ACTIVATED. ADJUTANT KHULAN OF THE SPRAWL MONITORING DIVISION IDENTIFIED. IMMEDIATE TERMINATION AUTHORIZED.’ Khulan yanked Lucang’s sleeve. “Move! Inside!” She shoved him onto the skimmer's lowered boarding ramp, rushing past the synthetic-leather interior. Before the pilot could react, Khulan had him in a chokehold, her movements efficient and brutal. He slumped, unconscious. She strapped herself into the pilot’s seat, her fingers flying across the controls. Thrusters screamed, whipping up grit and pulverized stone as the skimmer climbed vertical, clearing the roof just as the central dome caved inward. They broke into open air, leaving a smoking crater behind. Below, rebooting combat units threw blind tracer rounds into the mist, falling far short. Khulan banked through narrow sky-lanes between towering tenements, engine whine mingling with distant pursuit sirens. Lucang leaned back into the passenger cushions, the iron weapon resting dormant across his knees. Above the reinforced canopy, the neon glow of Niraya-Khanda, typically a pale teal and sour green, shifted into deep vermilion across the smog deck. Miles away, the Spire of Exalted Commerce flared under emergency strobes, its perimeter shields hardened into an opaque crimson grid. Lucang’s smile returned, wider, more unhinged than before. His eyes, reflecting the blood-red sky, gleamed with a dangerous amusement. He looked at Khulan, his gaze piercing. “Look, Khulan. They’ve locked the gates.” He laughed, a soft, joyful sound that sent a shiver down Khulan’s spine. “Splendid. They want to make this entertaining. Time to breach their high walls.”
