Chapter 10 of 10

The Final Fertilizer

1.4k words

A guttural shriek ripped through the air, vibrating the very deck beneath Chimali’s feet. The plummeting silhouette slammed into the unshielded central plaza, ripping through the hardened bio-plates with a sound like tearing metal and rending muscle. A crater, several times wider than the old Makara’s eye, erupted in a spray of pulverized biomatter and shattered bone. From the center of the fresh devastation, an alien colossus unfolded itself. It was a titan forged for war. Its chitinous hide gleamed with an inky sheen, segmented plating rippling across an unnervingly brutal frame. Six limbs, each ending in razor-sharp talons, anchored it to the shattered floor, while two additional, slender arms, tipped with crackling energy nozzles, flexed in casual menace. A helmet-like head, devoid of discernible features save for a solitary visor that pulsed with violet glare, swiveled slowly across the open city. This was the warmaster, the architect of the planetary cleansing. It let out a low, chittering laugh that scraped against the soul. “A defiant infestation,” the invader's voice scraped directly into Chimali’s skull, cold and grating. “But defiance changes nothing. This world is dead. All life, all organic impurity, shall be purged. And you, little vermin, will be the first to know oblivion.” Chimali stood by the bridge array, a faint tremor running through the massive bio-titan beneath him. His usual wide, cheerful grin was gone, replaced by a stillness that was far more unnerving. His eyes, usually bright with manic optimism, were now sharp, cold, and utterly devoid of warmth. This wasn’t the Chimali who’d recruited Ixchel with a bone rifle, nor the one who’d chatted about the finer points of bone meal with Ollin. This was something else entirely. The air grew heavy, thick with a sudden, suffocating pressure. “Oblivion?” Chimali asked softly, dangerously calm against the alien’s mental assault. “That’s a rather… inefficient use of organic material, wouldn’t you say? Especially when you’ve got such rich nutrient density.” Ixchel gripped the railing, her pulse hitching as cold sweat broke on her nape. She’d seen flashes of this Chimali before, moments where the mask slipped, but never like this. It was like staring into a deep, dark well where numbers and logic were the only stars. Ollin, beside her, his empty eye sockets fixed on Chimali’s profile, let out a dry, rattling chuckle. “Ah,” the skeletal general murmured, “he’s dropped the act. Took you long enough, boy.” Before the invader could process the bizarre response, Chimali slammed a palm against a console toggle. His voice, though quiet, cut through the hum of the deck and the creature's mental rasp. “Substrate analysis complete. Optimal decomposition vectors identified. Yields, prepare for processing.” [GLOBAL DOMINATION: AGGRESSIVE RECLAMATION PROTOCOL INITIATED. TARGET: VLaxari OverloRD. ALL YIELDS GRANTED ‘APEX PREDATOR’ BIOLOGICAL BOOST: +500% STRENGTH, +300% AGILITY, +200% DURABILITY. DECAY SPELL: ‘FINAL FERTILIZER’ UNLOCKED.] With a synchronized roar that tore the very air, the city’s defenses surged. From the gaping maw of the crater the Overlord had made, a torrent of hulking Bio-Husk Warriors, their bone plating now glowing with a sickly green light, swarmed forward. Their movements blurred, crude bone cleavers humming with razor edges. The Apex Harvester Hound, restored and bristling with mutated bio-cannons, launched itself from the perimeter, a missile of chitin and fury. The warlord swatted aside a dozen Bio-Husks with a backhand swipe of an energized forearm. They exploded in showers of bio-mass, but before the debris settled, another hundred surged forward, replacing them instantly. Its central visor flared with growing irritation. “Insignificant gnats!” From the air, Ollin the Unbroken descended, a blur of ancient steel and bone. He landed with a bone-jarring impact directly on the Overlord’s armored shoulder. His ancient Zweihänder, crackling with pure, raw necromantic force, cleaved downwards. The warlord shrieked in genuine agony as a segment of jet-black carapace cracked, weeping dark ichor. It tried to swat Ollin away, but the skeletal general darted across its back, hammering bone and steel home in blinding cadence. Ollin struck without the weariness of the cabbage patches, every slash sharp and lethal. “You call this an infestation?” Ixchel’s voice, clear and cold, cut through the din. She had launched herself from a nearby building, a black blur streaking across the plaza. Her custom bone sniper rifle, ‘Skullpiercer,’ barked, spitting a stream of high-velocity bone shards. The beast's central optic erupted in sparks under the impact, forcing it back as its mental screech shook the stones. “You haven’t seen a proper pest problem yet, bug.” The Harvester Hound snapped massive jaws shut on one of the warlord’s weapon arms, shearing the joint with a wet crack. The severed appendage sparked, showering the flagstones in green blood. The warlord roared, its surviving battery flaring wildly to scorch swathes of Bio-Husks, but the relentless horde swarmed over it. Every strike from Ollin, rifle slug from Ixchel, and bite from the Hound landed with catastrophic force. The beast was torn apart piece by agonizing piece, flesh knitting far too slowly against the assault. “Unacceptable!” the warlord projected, the telepathic pulse fraying into outright panic. “My armor… my shields… how?!” Chimali’s voice drifted over the chaos below. “It’s simple, really. You’re just a very large, very inefficient nutrient cluster. And we’re… very, *very* good at resource optimization.” He raised a hand, and the tiles under the thrashing behemoth ignited in virulent jade luminescence. “Time to apply the Final Fertilizer.” [DECAY SPELL: ‘FINAL FERTILIZER’ ACTIVATED. TARGET BIOLOGICAL INTEGRITY: 10%.] The beast shrieked in raw agony as the deck dissolved its remaining plates. Jet carapace cracked and flaked like parched clay, baring pulsing internal tissue. It collapsed onto shattered limbs, twitching, unable to rise. Chimali walked unhurriedly down the ramp and across the blood-slick plaza. He halted before the writhing titan, its solitary visor dim and sputtering. He didn’t smile. He didn’t gloat. His face was a mask of cold, analytical purpose. “Your species’ greatest mistake,” Chimali said evenly, “was thinking life was waste to be purged. It’s raw tonnage. A yield. And you are about to become the finest harvest yet.” He manifested a pulsing jade seed in his palm, thrusting it straight into the creature's exposed core. The behemoth gave one dying mental wail, then collapsed slack against the stones. Its body, still twitching faintly, began to dissolve into pure, shimmering bio-nutrient. It didn't explode. It simply became raw material. [VLaxari OverloRD ELIMINATED. NEW YIELD AVAILABLE: ‘OVERLORD PRIME BIOMASS.’] [GENESIS MANDATE: RECLAMATION PROTOCOL INITIATED. NEW UNIT TYPE ‘AGRICULTURAL OVERLORD’ UNLOCKED. WOULD YOU LIKE TO CONVERT ‘OVERLORD PRIME BIOMASS’ INTO ‘AGRICULTURAL OVERLORD’ UNIT? Y/N] “Yes,” Chimali said, his voice instantly regaining a hint of its usual cheer, though still with that undertone of ruthless efficiency. “Absolutely yes.” The shimmering sludge coalesced, rebuilding the black-plated silhouette of the alien warlord. This time, its central visor glowed with docile, verdant light. It rose smoothly on six talons, weapon mounts sealed and cold. Chimali reached into a nearby Bio-Husk’s inventory, pulling out a broad-brimmed straw hat and a sturdy, hand-forged hoe. He stepped up to the towering thrall, placed the straw hat squarely atop its crest, and fitted the hoe into a placid claw. “Welcome to the team,” Chimali said, his wide, sunny grin now fully back in place, brighter and more aggressively optimistic than ever. “We’ve got a lot of tilling to do, and I hear you’re excellent at turning over topsoil.” The resurrected titan, crowned with woven straw and holding the garden tool, clicked its mandibles in placid contentment. High above, the rest of the invasion flotilla, having watched the instantaneous butchery and conversion of their master, recoiled. Telepathic relays shattered into static. They didn’t retreat in an orderly fashion. They broke. Destroyer-class vessels, carrier-ships, and scout craft veered wildly, plummeting through the atmosphere or streaking for the stars, abandoning the system in blind, unreasoning terror. The planet, once a target for glassing, was now a place of unspeakable, agricultural horror. Weeks later, from the crumbling entrance of a forgotten subterranean bunker, a human cautiously peered out. They saw sunlight. They saw green. And then, their breath caught as a monstrous, living city, built upon the shell of a resurrected alien titan, marched across the horizon. On its uppermost terrace, a figure in a straw hat waved enthusiastically over fields of luminescent crops, while a skeletal general barked orders at an enormous alien laborer diligently turning the soil. Beside him, a dark-haired scout scanned the vast, open world with a quiet, knowing smile. The Verdant Necropolis, now truly unstoppable, continued its cheerful, terrifying march into the sunset, ready to plant the next field, ready to turn the entire galaxy into the most prosperous, heavily armed, and aggressively optimistic farm the cosmos had ever seen.
