Chapter 1: The Ink of Deception
1.6k words
Splashes of bright, toxic crimson coated the stone nose of the First Hokage. Neon-red paint dripped down the carved cheek, staining the monumental rock that overlooked the Hidden Leaf Village. Naruto Uzumaki hung suspended by a frayed rope, a paint bucket slung over his shoulder and a wide, mischievous grin plastered across his face. Laughter bubbled up from his throat, echoing off the stone faces of the legendary leaders.
He wiped a smear of red from his cheek, leaving a bright streak across his whisker-like facial scars. Down below, a crowd of villagers gathered, their upturned faces twisted in outrage. Angry shouts drifted up to his ears, but the vitriol did not hurt. It felt like warmth. To Naruto, their anger was proof that he existed. If they were screaming at him, they could not pretend he was invisible.
Suddenly, a gloved hand grabbed the collar of his orange jumpsuit. Iruka Umino stared down at him, his dark hair pulled back in a high ponytail, a deep scar cutting horizontally across the bridge of his nose. Instead of screaming, Iruka just looked at him. His eyes were hollow, filled with a crushing, silent disappointment that cut deeper than any harsh word.
"Why, Naruto?" Iruka's voice was a quiet, strained whisper. Pain in his teacher's eyes made Naruto's grin falter, his stomach dropping like a lead weight. "I just..." Naruto mumbled, his voice cracking as he looked away from the crushing gaze. "I wanted you to see."
---
Rough hands hauled Naruto into the academy classroom, dumping him unceremoniously onto the wooden floor. Ropes still bound his arms, but he barely felt the tight hemp biting into his skin. His chest felt hollow, a cavern of cold disappointment. Around him, the other students murmured, their whispers sharp and mocking.
Sakura Haruno sat in the front row, her bright pink hair catching the afternoon light. She let out a heavy sigh, crossing her arms as she looked down her nose at him. "Always trying to get attention," Sakura muttered, her voice dripping with irritation. "You are a disgrace, Naruto."
Beside her sat Sasuke Uchiha, the prodigy of the class, his dark eyes fixed on the window, utterly indifferent to Naruto's existence. Sasuke's jaw was tight, his posture rigid and perfect, radiating an effortless superiority that made Naruto's blood boil. At the front of the room, a new presence drew everyone's attention.
Kakashi Hatake stood near the teacher's podium, a lazy droop to his single visible eye. A dark fabric mask obscured most of his face, and his gray hair defied gravity, leaning to one side. Despite his relaxed posture, the sheer presence of the elite shinobi commanded the room.
On the table before him sat a tray of polished metal headbands, each engraved with the spiral leaf of their village. "Quiet down," Kakashi said, his voice flat but carrying an undeniable edge of authority. Silence instantly blanketed the room.
Kakashi picked up one of the headbands, the polished metal catching the light and casting a bright glare across Naruto's eyes. "Today, some of you officially become genin," Kakashi continued, his gaze drifting over the students. "You will be assigned to three-man squads, stepping out of the academy and into the harsh reality of the shinobi world."
He began calling names. Sakura stepped forward, her cheeks flushing pink as she received her headband, tying it carefully over her hair. Sasuke followed, his expression unchanged as he claimed his, wrapping it tightly around his forehead.
Naruto watched them, his fingers curling into tight fists against the wooden floor. Sweat dripped from his brow, his throat dry as sandpaper. He wanted that headband more than his next breath. He wanted the validation of belonging, the proof that he was not just a curse to be avoided.
"Lastly," Kakashi said, his tone dropping to a serious, quiet note. "Your first official assignment has already been designated due to its urgency. A young boy, the heir of a prominent Fire Country merchant, has been kidnapped near our eastern border. Team Seven will be deployed immediately upon authorization."
Naruto's heart hammered. He looked up, desperate, waiting for his name to be called. "And that concludes the passing list," Kakashi finished, setting the empty tray down.
Naruto's world shattered. He had failed the clone jutsu again. He was left behind, an outcast once more, while his rivals stepped into the light of glory.
---
Sunset bathed the academy courtyard in long, bleeding shadows. Naruto sat alone on the wooden swing, his boots scraping the dirt. He stared at the ground, his eyes burning with unshed tears. Iron chains groaned softly, a lonely sound that matched the ache in his chest.
"It must hurt," a soft voice murmured. Naruto flinched, looking up to see Mizuki standing before him. Silver-haired instructor wore a kind smile, his eyes curved in apparent sympathy.
He knelt in the dirt, bringing himself to Naruto's eye level. "Iruka doesn't hate you, Naruto," Mizuki said softly, his hand resting gently on Naruto's shoulder. "He just wants you to be strong. But there is another way. A secret test that only the most resilient students are allowed to take."
Naruto's ears perked up, his desperate need for approval overriding his caution. "A secret test?" Mizuki nodded, leaning closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper.
"Deep within the Hokage's residence lies the Scroll of Seals," Mizuki whispered, a strange glint passing through his eyes. "It contains supreme jutsu. If you can slip in, take the scroll, and learn just one technique from it, the village will have to acknowledge you. You will pass instantly. You might even join Sasuke and Sakura on that rescue mission."
Hope flared like a dying ember caught in a sudden gust of wind. Naruto gripped the ropes of the swing, his knuckles turning white. "I can really pass?" Naruto asked, his voice trembling. "They will look at me?"
"They won't have a choice," Mizuki promised, his smile widening.
---
Midnight arrived with a bitter, biting wind. Naruto ran through the dense forest on the outskirts of the village, a massive scroll strapped to his back. Heavy wooden cylinder thumped against his spine with every step.
He panted heavily, his lungs burning, his legs aching from hours of relentless running. Reaching a small clearing, he collapsed against the wall of a dilapidated wooden shack. He unrolled the scroll, his fingers trembling as he traced the intricate ink symbols of the forbidden jutsu.
He spent hours trying to mold his chaotic, wild energy. His palms were raw, covered in scrapes and bruises, but he refused to stop. "Found you," a voice gasped.
Naruto jumped, looking up to see Iruka standing at the edge of the clearing. Iruka's chest heaved as he caught his breath, his clothes damp with sweat. His eyes were wide with a mix of terror and confusion.
"Naruto, what have you done?" Iruka demanded, stepping forward. "Do you have any idea what that scroll is? It is a forbidden relic!"
Naruto grinned through his exhaustion, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Iruka-sensei!" Naruto cheered, pointing to the scroll. "I did it! I learned a jutsu! Now I get to graduate, right? Mizuki-sensei told me about the secret test!"
Iruka froze, his face draining of all color. "Mizuki...?" Sharp whistling sliced through the night air.
"Get down!" Iruka roared. He lunged forward, shoving Naruto to the ground as a volley of kunai knives rained from the canopy. Sharp steel tore through the air, pinning Iruka's flak jacket to the wooden wall of the shack.
Mizuki dropped from the branches above, landing gracefully in the clearing. Silver hair caught the moonlight, and a cruel, mocking laugh echoed through the trees. A massive giant shuriken was strapped to his back, gleaming with a lethal edge.
"Excellent work, Naruto," Mizuki sneered, his kind demeanor completely gone. "You actually managed to steal it. Now, hand over the scroll."
Naruto scrambled backward on his hands and knees, his heart hammering violently against his ribs. Warm, encouraging teacher from earlier was gone, replaced by a predator. "What's going on?" Naruto whimpered, his voice shaking. "Mizuki-sensei, you said..."
"I lied, you idiot," Mizuki spat, his eyes filled with a deep, sickening contempt. "Did you really think they would ever let a monster like you graduate? The village doesn't want you to be a ninja. They want you dead. Or locked away where your filth can't contaminate anyone else."
Naruto's breath hitched, a cold dread spreading through his veins. "A... monster?" Naruto whispered, his chest tightening so hard he could barely breathe.
Deep inside his belly, a foreign, burning heat began to stir, violent and wild. But the sheer weight of Mizuki's hatred kept him frozen. He looked at Iruka, searching for a denial, but his teacher only looked away, his jaw clenched in agonizing pain.
Silence was deafening, confirming the horrible truth. They did not just ignore him. They despised him. They hated the very blood in his veins, the very soul in his body.
Mizuki reached behind his back, gripping the center of the giant shuriken. He unstrapped it, the massive four-pointed blade spinning with a terrifying, metallic hum. "You were never a student, Naruto," Mizuki growled, his face twisted in a murderous grin. "You are just a demon that needs to be put down."
Mizuki raises a massive shuriken to split Naruto's skull, but Iruka throws his own body over the boy, blood splattering across Naruto's horrified face as Mizuki sneers, 'Let me tell you why they really hate you, orphan.'
