Chapter 6 of 10

Routing the Zenith Siege

Rostvan’s gaze hardened, not with fear, but with the quiet fury of a man whose nap schedule was being brutally disrespected. “Harvesters, eh? Just when I thought this ‘Divine Seed’ couldn’t get any more theatrical.” He sighed, the Serpent-Kiss Blade still humming in his hand, its jewel-encrusted pommel cool against his palm. “Right. One moment.” He didn't need to look at Eteri to know she had drawn her runic shortsword, `Vindica`, its polished blade reflecting the chaotic glow of the Skymelons. Her stance was coiled, ready. Tato, meanwhile, had managed to flatten himself behind a particularly robust patch of `Whisper-Root` carrots, his face the color of an unripe `Lumiflora` berry. A deafening *CRACK* reverberated through Floor 100, not from the Zeda Spire itself, but from a section of the shimmering mana-barrier Rostvan had erected at his main entrance – a gate he’d painstakingly calibrated to prevent anything larger than a `Glimmer-Worm` from entering without permission. The barrier now fractured like brittle ice, splintering into glowing shards that dissipated into the miasma beyond. Through the rapidly expanding gap, a column of elite `Platinum Zenith` shock troops, their `Argent` mail gleaming, poured onto the floor. At their head strode Guildmaster Kaelin, his imposing figure framed by the swirling magical currents. “Eteri!” the guildmaster's voice boomed, amplified by an `Echo-Shard` embedded in his gauntlet, cutting through the din. “You dare defy our order! Prepare to face justice for your treachery!” Before Eteri could even twitch a muscle, a new, more unsettling presence descended. Three colossal figures, each roughly twice the height of a man, materialized from the roiling clouds above. Their forms were skeletal, carved from the same jagged, light-absorbing rock that made up the deeper Spire levels, but animated by an eerie, core luminescence. Great, fractured wings of mana-light flared from their backs, beating with a slow, deliberate rhythm that thrummed through the floor. Their faces were smooth, devoid of features, save for two burning points of violet light where eyes should have been. These were the Reapers. They moved with an unnatural grace, their focus immediately drawn to the crimson seed, now a throbbing, thorny mass reaching for the ceiling like a hungry maw. They paid the guild soldiers no mind, moving to form a protective perimeter around the parasitic plant. The guildmaster, however, saw only new obstacles. “What in the blazes are these grotesque constructs?” he roared, pointing his `Sunstone` mace at the nearest monolith. “Cleave them! They stand between us and the Spire’s bounty!” An `Argent` guard charged forward, roaring a `War-Cry of the Sky-Piercer`. His enchanted axe, `Gale-Splitter`, whistled through the air, aimed directly at the construct’s stony leg. The Reaper merely raised a limb, not in defense, but in a slow, almost bored motion. A crackle of pure mana erupted, and the man, axe and all, was reduced to a fine mist of glowing particles. The mist settled, leaving no trace but a faint ozone smell. Kaelin's booming voice died in his throat. A collective gasp rippled through the guild ranks. Rostvan pinched the bridge of his nose. “Seriously? Can’t they fight *each other* somewhere else? This is becoming a nuisance.” He snapped his fingers, a faint shimmer of `Chronosilk` rippling through the air. A series of ancient `Glyphs of Translocation`, meticulously carved into the cavern floor by Rostvan months ago (purely to avoid having to walk an extra fifty paces to the apiary), flared with a soft, azure light. The invading squad, still stunned by the construct’s casual display of power, suddenly found the very ground beneath their feet shifting. The entrance they had shattered, the opening in Rostvan’s mana-barrier, warped. It didn’t move physically, but its spatial coordinates twisted, rotating a hundred and eighty degrees. What was once the guild’s point of ingress now faced *inward*, directly at the three colossal guardians. Kaelin, mid-shout, found himself staring not at the distant alien pit, but at the looming, featureless face of a Reaper less than ten feet away. Its deep radiance thrummed with what could only be described as cosmic indifference. The troops behind him, still pouring through the now-relocated breach, crashed headlong into the sentinels with the momentum of a tidal wave meeting a cliff face. The cavern erupted into chaos. `Argent` armor clashed against Spire-stone. Mana-bolts, `Arcane` blasts, and `Rune-infused` strikes hammered against the impervious forms of the sentinels, who responded with silent, devastating mana-bursts. Men screamed, turning to ash. Vorlag bellowed orders that were lost in the cacophony, his mace now striking out in desperation. Eteri watched, her expression unreadable, then a slow, almost imperceptible curve touched her lips. “Efficient,” she murmured, her gaze briefly meeting Rostvan’s. “You didn’t even need to lift another sword.” Rostvan shrugged, wiping a smudge of dirt from a `Solanaceae` leaf. “Why exert myself when I can get my enemies to do it for me? Now, about that nap…” He glanced at the budding monstrosity, then at the frantic battle. “Still needs pruning. Annoying.” Tato, still plastered to the ground, whimpered as a stray mana-blast singed the leaves of his `Whisper-Root` fortress. He tried to scramble further away, tripping over a basket of `Fire-Bloom` peppers Rostvan had left carelessly nearby. The peppers, bright crimson and glowing with stored elemental heat, scattered across the floor. One, in particular, rolled directly into the path of a Reaper that had just effortlessly bisected two armored `Arch-Sentinels`. The sentinel, focused on the next line of vanguard troops, stepped forward, and Tato, in a desperate, flailing attempt to avoid being crushed, pushed himself up with both hands. His palm landed squarely on the `Fire-Bloom` pepper, crushing its delicate skin. The pepper, bursting with raw `Pyro-Mana`, shot forward from his hand with surprising force, a crimson projectile. It slammed into the center of the construct’s smooth, stony chest, where its hidden radiance burned brightest. There was a moment of silence, a beat of utter stillness in the maelstrom of battle. The construct stiffened. Its deep light flickered wildly, like a dying star. A faint sizzle began to emanate from its core, growing rapidly. Then, with a sound like a thousand volcanoes erupting simultaneously, the entity burst. Not into dust, but into a magnificent, controlled conflagration of pure `Pyro-Mana`, its runaway charge overloading and consuming its Spire-stone form. The blast vaporized a significant chunk of the remaining guild troops and sent the other two sentinels reeling. Tato stared, wide-eyed and trembling, at the lingering `Pyro-Mana` residue. “Did… did I just…?” Rostvan, who had already retrieved a bag of `Sun-Puff` corn kernels from his shed, tossed a handful into a nearby `Glow-Bloom` pot, where they instantly began to pop with a cheerful *thwip-thwip-thwip*. “He did,” he confirmed, offering a steaming bowl of the mutated popcorn to Eteri. “Remarkably efficient. And much less messy than their usual method.” Eteri took a kernel, her gaze still fixed on the stunned Kaelin, who was now being pinned by one of the remaining sentinels. “The Guildmaster seems to be having a rather… spirited discussion with that one.” A tiny, genuine smile touched her lips. The `Sun-Puff` popcorn was perfectly crisp, with a subtle sweetness that enhanced the salty crunch. Rostvan leaned back against a magically reinforced `Whisper-Oak` barrel, munching contentedly. “Perhaps he’ll learn the value of a quiet life. Or at least, the value of not interrupting my attempts at one.” The remaining two giants, battered but still standing, were now engaging the last pockets of the invasion. One of them, its mana-wing partially shattered, was slowly but surely being overwhelmed by sheer numbers, though its destruction was still causing immense collateral damage. The final construct fell with a grating screech of tortured stone, its interior glow dimming. As its form crumbled, the last vestiges of its turbulent power didn’t dissipate. Instead, they swirled, drawn by an unseen draft, towards the parasite. The alien growth, already a grotesque tangle of void-vines, throbbed violently. It began to absorb the fallen entity's essence, its thorny tendrils thickening, its growth accelerating at an alarming rate. A new, terrifying proclamation echoed through the Spire, colder and more urgent than any before: [IGNISIA SEED: HARVESTER ESSENCE INTEGRATED. GROWTH ACCELERATION CRITICAL.] [BLOOM IMMINENT: 12 HOURS.]
