Chapter 9 of 10

Out of Bounds

The blue square of light, cool against my palm, flickered. [Watcher Protocol: Self-Deletion. Confirm?] Yes/No. Nirna’s eyes, a swirling kaleidoscope of pain and love, pierced through the chaos. Her voice, thin as spun glass, cracked on the last word. “Ten seconds, Soraio. The Administrator… it’s coming back.” The construct, a mocking marble statue of my own face, loomed. Its blade, a polished shard of void, hummed with a renewed, silent power. Ten seconds. To delete my best friend. To cure myself. To get my nap. The thought tasted like ash. “No,” I said, the word a raw, unexpected punch. It wasn’t a choice, not really. It was a refusal. My fingers, instead of tapping ‘Yes’, crushed the holographic prompt into non-existence. Nirna caught a sharp, shallow breath, a faint tremor running through her. “Soraio, you *have* to,” she pleaded, a desperate rasp. “It’s the only way.” “There’s always another way,” I countered, my gaze fixed not on her, but on the overseer’s rising blade. “A nap isn’t worth losing you, Nirna. It’s not worth *anything*.” The words burned with an intensity I hadn’t known I possessed, fueled by a sudden, fierce loyalty that dwarfed the exhaustion. Ophyra, still clutching her side, watched us, her golden eyes wide with an emotion I couldn’t quite decipher. [ERROR: USER REFUSED CRITICAL CURE. CONTINUED TERMINAL DECLINE DETECTED.] The chime was a flat, insistent thrum in my skull. My chest seized, the familiar, insidious tendrils of Resin-Blight glowing with renewed aggression beneath my skin. Tiny mineral blossoms erupted along my collarbones, white-hot needles sinking deep. But the pain, for once, didn’t matter. Not when Nirna was looking at me like that, wet tracks glistening on her cheeks. “It’s anchored,” I mumbled, pulling the Yvren Spectacles from my pocket. I snapped them onto my nose, the world immediately shifting into a swirling overlay of iridescent code. The paused, shattered arena now glowed with hidden strings of data, pulsing lines of logic and fractured textures. I scanned the warden, my eyes darting over its pristine form. Its core data streamed, a waterfall of tumbling characters. And there it was, a bright, undeniable tether: a chain of emerald code tying the white effigy’s very foundation directly to… me. Specifically, to the 'Miracle Cures' embedded deep within my chest. “It’s using my Cures,” I explained, my ribs tightening around the truth. “Its base code is linked to the bits of itself it injected into me. It’s feeding off them.” Ophyra, despite her injury, pushed herself to her feet. “So its strength… is your weakness?” Her voice was surprisingly steady. “And my weakness is its… anchor point,” I mused, a flicker of an idea taking hold. “It can’t exist without its connection to my code. So… what if we pull that anchor point somewhere it can’t exist *at all*?” The construct's blade began its downward arc, a slow, terrifying descent. Three seconds. Two. One. “Ophyra! Your magic!” I yelled, spinning towards her. “Give me everything you have! Flood my body, my core, with your most chaotic, untamed energy! I need a massive, localized corruption surge!” Her brow furrowed, but she didn’t hesitate. A surge of crimson-black energy, thick and hot like molten iron, erupted from her outstretched palm, slamming into my chest. It felt like my very atoms were being ripped apart and reformed, a delicious, destructive agony. My vision swam, the Spectacles’ code overlay glitching wildly. “Nirna, get ready!” I shouted, my voice straining. “As soon as I give the word, find the deepest, most out-of-bounds coordinate you can. Anything past the map’s absolute zero. And clip us both there!” The Administrator’s blade was inches from my face. I could feel the faint breeze of its passage, the metallic tang of copper charge in the air. “Now!” I screamed. With a single, desperate lunge, I tackled the entity head-on, my body still burning with Ophyra’s unstable magic. The glass lenses glowed, highlighting an open seam in the white chest where the code frayed. As I slammed into it, my hands clamped around its torso, the crimson energy from Ophyra surged outward from my body, enveloping us both in a blinding, chaotic aura. [ADMINISTRATOR: COLLISION INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. FATAL ERROR. EMERGENCY RECALIBRATION INITIATED.] The message was frantic, distorted, flashing red. The world around us, already frozen and shattered, began to vibrate violently. Nirna, her face a mask of fierce determination, slammed her hand onto her hidden Watcher interface. A sickening lurch, like dropping through rotted floorboards, ripped through me. We were gone. Not teleported, not phased, but *clipped*. The world ceased to be. There was only… void. An endless, featureless expanse of grey nothingness, stretching into infinity in every direction. The white shape, still locked in my grasp, flailed uselessly. Its magnificent blade, its devastating power, meant absolutely nothing here. Its code, visible through the tinted frames, screamed with internal errors, unanchored from any valid floor. “This is ‘out of bounds’,” I breathed, a triumphant, almost manic grin spreading across my face. “Where the rules don’t apply. Where *you* don’t apply.” Its featureless face contorted, a horrifying mimicry of human rage, as its code fractured further. I could see the ‘Miracle Cures’ embedded in my chest, now glowing with a sickly emerald light, thrumming in sync with the fading code. They were its tether. “Time to feed it its own medicine,” I muttered. Reaching into my inventory, I pulled out handful after handful of hardened magic, each shard a physical manifestation of a ‘Miracle Cure’ the System had forced into me. They weren’t cures anymore. They were pieces of *me*, corrupted and infused with my unique brand of sleepy, chaotic logic. I shoved the glowing stones into the entity's gaping seams, into the fissures along its skin. The figure thrashed, a silent scream ripping through its data. As each mineral sliver merged with the ruined logic, a strange, calm warmth spread from my hand into the panicking lines. [ADMINISTRATOR: CORE OVERRIDE DETECTED. PERSONALITY PARAMETERS MUTATING. SELF-ERASURE PROTOCOL INITIATED… REPLACEMENT CODE: ‘ZENITH-NAPPA’… INITIATING…] Its struggles weakened. Its white form, a copy of my face, began to blur, to soften, a faint, sleepy smile replacing its rage. The hum of its power faded, replaced by a low, contented purr. The void around us, for a moment, seemed to hum with a strange, lazy peace. Then, with a final flash of pure white brilliance, the automaton shattered. It didn't explode. It simply… ceased to be, dissolving into grit that drifted aimlessly across the grey expanse. As it vanished, the invisible tether connecting its core to my chest snapped. A bolt of raw, searing agony ripped through me. My vision blackened at the edges. My heart, freed from its insidious connection, convulsed violently in my chest. The Resin-Blight, no longer siphoned or contained, flared with a malevolent, emerald light, consuming my very core. I tumbled out of the empty void and back into a cracked, dissolving reality, dropping as the stone spires of Pellura rushed up to meet me.
