Chapter 1 of 10
The Glitch in the Floorboards
835 words
Soraio’s head thumped against the cool, polished obsidian of his mapping desk, a comfortable counterpoint to the insistent thrum of his Resin-Blight. Even the faint, sugary scent of the conservatory's paper-vine blossoms couldn’t quite lull him into the deep sleep he craved. He needed just five minutes. Just enough to reset his vision, which insisted on blurring the meticulous lines of the ‘Cartography of the Whispering Spires’ he was supposed to be revising. His stylus, a slender reed of woven light called a Lux-Quill, lay abandoned beside a half-finished diagram of the city’s upper-level wind currents.
His eyelids, heavy as leaden parchment, were just beginning to yield to the sweet abyss when a shattering CRACK ripped through the quiet study chamber. Soraio jolted upright, his neck protesting with a series of sharp clicks. Shards of crystalline windowpane rained down onto his desk, glittering like discarded ambition.
Through the new, jagged hole in the wall burst a contraption of whirring copper and flickering aether-glass: a mechanical pigeon. Its singular ruby eye pulsed with frantic urgency as it careened wildly, then tumbled, clattering, onto the very center of Soraio’s map. From its beak, a small, intricate object slipped free, landing with a soft *clink* beside his Lux-Quill.
It was an optic device, crafted from what looked like pure, shimmering moonlight. Their frames were delicate filigree, inset with tiny, humming gears. The lenses themselves glowed with a faint, internal luminescence. The legendary artifact Nirna had mentioned a week ago, whispering about glass that could reveal hidden truths. Soraio examined the tiny cogs, his fatigue momentarily forgotten, curiosity nudging aside the steady ache in his ribs.
Before he could even reach for them, the oak door to his study chamber exploded inward. Not kicked, not merely forced, but *shattered* into splinters, sending a violent gust of wind through the room. Standing framed in the wreckage, a sharp silhouette against the bustling hallway, was Vandro. His crimson-and-gold uniform, the official regalia of a ‘Glyph-Singer of the First Quintile,’ seemed to vibrate with his self-importance. His hair, a perfect cascade of polished obsidian, was swept back from a sneer that promised retribution.
“*You!*” Vandro’s voice boomed, sharp as a snapped axiom. “Thief! Where are the Yvren Lenses? My pigeon *clearly* misdelivered!” He strode forward, his heavy, ornate boots thudding against the polished floor. His gaze landed on the shimmering glasses, then on Soraio’s startled face. “So, the apprentice with the perpetually tired eyes fancies himself a hero, does he? Hand them over, worm. They are destined for *me*.”
Soraio, still half-dazed by the suddenness of it all, could only blink. “I… I think it just flew in. I didn’t –”
Vandro didn’t wait for an explanation. He lunged, a whirlwind of gold braid and righteous indignation. But the path he chose was… imperfect. The floors here were ancient, composed of interlocking hexagonal plates of crystallized knowledge. Most were flawless, but Soraio, in his countless hours of mapping, had noticed a subtle anomaly near his desk: a hairline crack, almost invisible, running along the edge of one particular hexagonal tile. It didn't seem important. Until now.
Vandro's heavy boot landed squarely on that exact crack. Instead of solid obsidian, his foot simply… sank. It wasn't a trip, or a stumble. It was a clean, jarring *clip*. His arrogant face, frozen in a mask of fury and entitlement, crumpled into an expression of profound confusion, then comical surprise, then nothing at all. One moment he was there, a vibrant, shouting presence. The next, he was gone. Vanished. As if the floorboards had simply swallowed him whole, leaving only the faint scent of ozone and the lingering echo of his indignation.
Soraio peered at the empty flagstone where Vandro had stood, then looked over at the intact lenses on his desk, the punctured window, and the splintered remains of his door. The silence in the chamber settled thick, broken only by the distant murmur of the stacks.
Then, a soft, pleasant chime resonated directly inside Soraio’s mind, gentle as a dewdrop striking a bell.

The chime sounded again, this time with a distinct *pop*. A warm, golden light enveloped Soraio, a sensation both comforting and strangely invasive. He felt a dull ache in his chest—the insidious Resin-Blight—recede, like a tide pulling away from the shore. A fraction of the ever-present fatigue lifted, replaced by a subtle, unfamiliar clarity. He felt… better.
But as the golden light faded, a more profound emptiness settled in. He tried to picture his mother's face. The soft curve of her smile, the way her hair fell, the crinkle around her eyes when she laughed. Nothing. A blank space. A void where vivid memory had once been.
