Chapter 10 of 10

The Naptime Treaty

1.2k words

Senzhi stared down at Tarkhan, knuckles throbbing from the impact, while stone walls swallowed the scrape of her sandals. Rupi, whimpering softly, had crawled past her legs and was now gnawing on the gilded bars of the crib. Tarkhan lay sprawled on the polished obsidian floor, a dark bruise already blossoming on his pale skin. His pale irises, reflecting the glow-lamps overhead, held a sharp, unbridled euphoria. He touched his jaw, a slow, unhinged smile spreading across his face. “I have missed your gentle touch, my Empress.” “Empress?” Her voice dropped low, shedding every shred of her stuttering scribe act. “You think *this* is a reunion? You think this gilded cage is going to hold me, you obsessive monster?” She retreated half a pace, cataloging the chamber: velvet bolsters, silk wall-hangings, a carved ebony divan, and a single iron slab set into the granite. It reeked of a permanent tomb. She plunged her fingers into her damp outer wrap, closing her grip around notched brass. With a flourish, she pulled it out, letting the heavy, ornate key to the Imperial Vault of Chains dangle from her fingertips. It glinted under the vault’s soft light, a mocking twinkle against Tarkhan’s stunned face. His smile faltered, a flicker of something akin to confusion, then pure disbelief, crossing his features. “The—the vault key. How…?” “You really think I’d punch you without some collateral?” Senzhi sneered, shaking the key slightly. The small *clink* was deafening in the silence. “The moment I felt my fist connect, my other hand was already fishing for this, you idiot. You’re lucky I didn’t take your signet ring too.” Tarkhan leveraged his weight off the obsidian tiles, staring at the brass bit as his manic grin turned rigid. “No. No, you can’t… This is impossible. It was… It was welded into my belt. Only I…” “Only you, a man who mistakes broken teeth for intimacy,” Senzhi spat. “You really don’t know anything about me, do you? All those years, and you never understood. This isn’t a negotiation, Tarkhan. This is a demand. And if you don’t meet my terms, I will unlock this threshold, walk out, and invoke the First Consort's Interdict.” Tarkhan froze, midway through standing. The ancient statute was an unrepealed founding charter clause that Senzhi had unearthed while inventorying mildewed dynastic scrolls. It empowered the imperial spouse, upon proof of sovereign misconduct, to halt every civil magistrate's quill, freezing state ledgers until redress was granted. “The Interdict?” Tarkhan stammered. The color drained from his face, replaced by a pallid shock. This wasn’t just about her leaving; this was about his entire reign destabilizing. Even a conqueror needed clerks to collect tithes. “You cannot. It is absurd! No consort has dared invoke it in six centuries!” “Well, I am not just any runaway consort,” Senzhi said, stepping forward. “You tried to trap me. You separated me from my son. You nearly drowned us both. This is malfeasance of the highest order, Emperor. And my demands are simple: My freedom, Rupi’s safety, and a complete cessation of your… *tendencies*.” She made a vague gesture with the key, encompassing his entire personality. “Or Zha-Khar’s ministries will grind to ash while tax collectors beg in the streets.” Just as Tarkhan looked ready to argue, a faint, rhythmic *thump-thump-thump* started vibrating through the vault walls, accompanied by a low, collective grumbling. It grew louder, closer, until the heavy outer vault door, beyond their inner sanctum, rattled violently. *THUD!* *THUD!* *THUD!* The sound was unmistakable. Someone was trying to breach the vault. Tarkhan glanced between Senzhi, the dangling metal, and the shuddering wall. He lunged for the vault’s internal communication array, barking, “Who dares?!” The door groaned under another massive impact, and a voice, muffled but distinct, boomed from outside. “Emperor Tarkhan! This is High Scholar Munjal! We are here to negotiate a treaty!” Negotiate a treaty? Senzhi exchanged a bewildered look with Tarkhan. Munjal? The outer vault door finally gave way with a screech of tortured metal, revealing a shocking sight. High Scholar Munjal stood at the forefront, his usually impeccable robes rumpled, a wild, disheveled look in his eyes. Behind him, a veritable sea of scholars, their faces groggy with interrupted slumber, stretched into the newly revealed outer passageway. They clutched scrolls like cudgels, some rubbing sleep from their eyes, others yawning cavernously, but all radiating an intense, sleepy indignation. Munjal pointed a trembling finger at Tarkhan. “Your Imperial Highness, your callous disregard for the mandatory nap schedule has caused a systemic breakdown! Our productivity has plummeted! Our dreams are fractured! We demand satisfaction!” A chorus of sleepy, furious affirmations rose from the scholar mob. “Satisfaction! Naptime for all! A permanent decree!” Tarkhan stared, aghast, at the unexpected rebellion. An academic strike. Scholars, the very backbone of his administration, were refusing to work until their naps were restored. This eclipsed even her threatened strike; civil order was crumbling under collective sleep deprivation. Senzhi seized the moment. She stepped forward, holding the vault key aloft. “Munjal, you’re just in time. The sovereign and I were reviewing the crown's administrative schedules. I was preparing to invoke the ancient Interdict, freezing the central offices that log your rest shifts.” Munjal’s red-rimmed lids stretched. He looked at Senzhi, then at Tarkhan, then at the key, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face. “The Sovereign Interdict! A devastating sanction, Sire. Perhaps a settlement serves us all—one securing Lady Senzhi’s personal autonomy alongside our guild’s restorative siestas?” Tarkhan looked from Senzhi’s steely gaze to Munjal’s menacingly sleepy mob, then to Rupi, who had just managed to pry a small, decorative diamond from the crib bars and was attempting to swallow it. The prospect of an empty court, an uncooperative spouse, and a paralyzed chancellery broke his posture. His predatory fixations buckled under the threat of complete abandonment. If she would stay, if she would only *stay*, he would give her anything. He would submit to any demand, no matter how humiliating. He swallowed hard. “Fine! Senzhi, my heart, I yield. Your freedom. Rupi’s safety. My… my tendencies will be… addressed.” He turned to Munjal, his voice cracking with desperation. “And the mandatory nap schedule will be permanently enshrined! A royal decree! You have my word!” A cheer, surprisingly robust for a group of sleep-deprived scholars, erupted from the mob. Munjal smiled, a truly unsettling sight. “Excellent. We shall draft the decree immediately. And as for your ‘tendencies,’ Emperor, I believe I have just the program for you. Mandatory attendance, of course.” Weeks later, in a sun-dappled courtyard, Senzhi watched from a distance as Tarkhan, dressed in a surprisingly plain scholar’s robe, sat cross-legged on a mat. He clutched a stylus and parchment, furiously scribbling notes as Munjal, perched on a higher platform, lectured about ‘Emotional Regulation Through Thoughtful Pause’ and ‘Understanding Boundaries in Interpersonal Relationships.’ Tarkhan’s brows were furrowed in intense concentration, occasionally muttering, “Ah, yes, ‘respect for personal space,’ noted.” Beside Senzhi, Rupi snored softly in a custom-built, miniature palanquin, a tiny, chew-resistant scroll clutched in his fist. Senzhi leaned back against a warm stone pillar, a rare, genuine smile gracing her lips. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, she was truly, deeply, peacefully asleep, even though her eyes were wide open. Her nap, and her freedom, were finally secure.
