Chapter 7 of 10
Shattering the Halo

The crushing field intensified, driving the air straight from Tansiya’s ribs. Though sightless, she felt the vault grow darker, colder, as if the light itself was being consumed. Vazkar’s roar of agony tore through the stifling air, raw and desperate. A low thrum pulsed through the flags beneath her boots, rattling her teeth as it leeched marrow-deep vigor. She could hear the wet, ragged gasp of Dastur, still bound, still siphoning, a victim of Ostam’s parasitic ambition.
“No god-like knight can stand against this,” Ostam’s voice, smug and chilling, echoed from the darkness. “You’re all trapped now.”
Trapped. The word tasted like ash. Tansiya’s core flared with a familiar, searing pride. Trapped? She, who had faced oblivion and returned to unravel entire worlds? Never. Vulnerability was a weakness she could not afford, but this was not vulnerability. This was a challenge, a calculation.
She reached out, fingers closing over Vazkar’s forearm. His skin was slick with cold sweat, the muscles beneath trembling. The faint warmth she had grown accustomed to from him was fading, replaced by a chill that worried at the edges of her resolve. The Rot was clawing back along his flesh, black filaments swelling under his skin.
“Quiet, Vazkar,” she commanded, her voice low but piercing. “Do not waste your energy fighting the inevitable. This ward siphons the vitality stored within the masonry, but it’s anchored to *him*.” Her blind gaze, sharp and analytical, swept in Ostam’s direction. “He’s draining Dastur’s breath to feed his own dimming halo, which in turn drives this choke. It’s a closed loop, fueled by stolen vitality.”
Ostam let out a short, sharp laugh. “Clever for a blind woman. But what good is insight when you can’t act?”
“Oh, I can act,” Tansiya retorted, a cold smile touching her lips. “Your problem, ‘prince,’ is that you’ve tethered your existence to the very thing I specialize in disrupting.”

A small, satisfied hum escaped her. The System, ever a timely ally. Pyric Catalyst Powder. A rare alchemical agent designed to rapidly accelerate combustion in specific organic compounds. Stolen vitality, coursing hot through Ostam’s meridians, remained volatile matter beneath its stolen sheen.
“Zarfin,” she called out, shifting her weight. “Your blades, point them at the stone directly behind Ostam. Not to strike, but to mark.”
Zarfin grunted under the invisible drag. A faint scraping sound indicated he was following her instruction, carving shallow grooves into the rock.
“Good.” Tansiya reached into the hidden pouch at her waist, her fingers unerringly finding a small, intricately carved bone vial. She uncorked it, a faint, metallic scent, almost like ozone, wafting into the air. “Ostam, you fool. You’ve been draining the wells, siphoning Dastur, all to maintain that pretty little lie above your head. What happens, I wonder, when that stolen breath turns against you?”
“Nonsense!” Ostam scoffed, but a tremor of uncertainty laced his voice. The field around him seemed to flicker, a momentary instability that Vazkar instantly capitalized on, letting out a roar of defiance that was quickly stifled by the renewed pressure.
Tansiya tossed the vial. It arced through the dark, a tiny, almost imperceptible whistle preceding its impact. It struck the rock precisely where Zarfin had marked, shattering with a soft *clink*. A fine, almost invisible dust exploded outwards.
“What was that?” Ostam snapped, pitch thinning into shrill panic. He slapped at his collar, but the gray film clung to his wool tunic, his skin, and the blinding glow hovering over his brow.
Then, it began. First, a faint orange glow, like embers deep within a furnace. It sparked along the outer perimeter of his halo, where the stolen quintessence churned thickest. The orange deepened, turning to crimson, then to a blinding, furious gold. Ostam screamed, a sound ripped from the depths of his being, as his very plot armor ignited. The *light* wasn’t just around him; it was *in* him, searing his veins, his skin, turning his literal golden halo into a crown of pure, agonizing flame.
“It burns!” he shrieked, collapsing to his knees, clutching his head. The halo, once a symbol of his undeserved glory, now writhed like a living thing, a burning shackle. The dampening circle around them sputtered and collapsed, starved of focus. Vazkar lunged forward with a sharp gasp, the dark veins retreating into his flesh while green fire flared behind his irises.
But before he could reach the screaming prince, the heavy vault door groaned open, revealing a flood of torchlight and a phalanx of Temple Guards. At their head, her face a mask of carefully constructed grief, stood Nirali, the *Saintess*.
“Ostam! My beloved!” she cried, her voice echoing with feigned anguish. She rushed forward, a shimmering, soft golden halo crowning her head, her delicate robes flowing around her. She stared at Ostam thrashing upon the flagstones, then snapped her gaze to Vazkar with practiced, theatrical horror. “Vazkar! What have you done? Have you truly fallen so far? Return to me, my knight! This… this witch has corrupted you! Come back to the light, where you belong!” Her voice broke, a single, perfectly timed tear tracking a path down her cheek.
The Temple Guards, their ornate armor gleaming, raised their bladed staves, forming a defensive crescent around Nirali and the still-burning Ostam.
Nirali extended a trembling hand towards Vazkar, her halo throbbing with amplified power. “Come, my loyal lion. Remember your vows! Remember the honor you swore to the realm, to me! I can heal you, cleanse you of her vile influence!”
Vazkar stood upright, his massive silhouette static as ozone hissed against his bracers. He looked at Nirali, his emerald gaze piercing through her carefully crafted facade. A slow, chilling smile spread across his lips, devoid of warmth, full of contempt. Then, a low, rumbling sound began in his chest, growing in volume until it erupted into a cold, mocking laugh that echoed through the vault, stripping away Nirali’s pathetic pretense.
“My vows?” Vazkar’s tone scraped low, setting the guards shifting on their greaves. “My honor? You dare speak of vows, *Saintess*? You abandoned me to the rot, applauded my ruin, and drank the very sap of the land you claimed to bless.” He took one step toward Tansiya, then another, ignoring Nirali’s reaching hand.
“No, Nirali,” he continued, his voice dripping with icy disdain. “My loyalty, my honor, my very soul… they belong to *her*.” He reached Tansiya, a colossal shadow eclipsing her slight frame. With a movement that was both swift and deliberate, he knelt, not before the *Saintess*, but before the blind apothecary. The mighty warrior, the world’s strongest being, lowered his head, his hand gently taking the hem of Tansiya’s simple, unadorned robe. He brought it to his lips, pressing a soft, reverent kiss to the fabric, a silent, absolute declaration of fealty that shook the very foundations of Nirali’s world.
Nirali’s face contorted, her angelic mask shattering into a mosaic of raw fury and humiliation. Her halo, previously soft and comforting, flared with a harsh, unstable light. The damp sheen vanished from her cheeks, leaving a manic glare.
“You… you dare?!” she shrieked, her voice no longer dulcet but shrill, echoing with the frustration of a spoiled child denied. “This world will *not* deny me! If I cannot have it, if I cannot rule its glory, then no one shall!” She threw her hands out, her body trembling with rage. “Let the earth's marrow drain to ash! Let the realm starve so I may reign over the cinders!”
From the lower vault, a heavy vibration rose out of the deep strata. A tremor ran through the stone, growing in intensity. The air grew heavy, thick with raw, untamed energy. The Miracle Well, the parasitic heart of Oraz-Khand, was beginning to sing a song of oblivion. Nirali, insane with thwarted ambition, had initiated the self-destruct protocol.
