Flagrant Violation of Physics

“Too late…” he wheezed through bloody teeth. “…The seal is broken.” The words hung in the stale conduit air as lime dust trickled through cracked masonry. A low rumble, deep and resonant, vibrated through the floor. It wasn't a distant subterranean tremor anymore; it was a hungry groan directly beneath them. Dust rained from the vaulted ceiling. The ancient stonework groaned, a sound like a giant’s sigh. “No,” Timur whispered, his skin draining of color. This wasn’t how it was supposed to happen. Not yet. He had months. Months to prepare, to plan. His eyes darted to Ayla, who clutched his tunic, her small frame trembling. Then the entire Yildiz Institute *roared*. A sound of tearing rock, of splintering earth, resonated from the canyon base. A deafening crack ripped through the air, followed by a concussive blast that nearly knocked them off their feet. A distant scream, shrill and brief, cut off abruptly. “The Chasm!” Shirin shouted, her voice tight with alarm. She pointed towards the gaping maw of the canyon far below, where the entrance to the Obsidian Chasm was now visible. A terrifying black rift, jagged and smoking, had torn open in the canyon wall, spewing forth a noxious green mist. [Dungeon Breach: Obsidian Chasm. Severity: Catastrophic. Estimated Time to Containment: N/A. Warning: High-level entities detected.] Timur didn't need the Ledger to tell him. He knew. He'd lived this nightmare once. He grabbed Ayla, pulling her close. “We have to go. Now. Into the Chasm.” Barlas let out a startled yelp as Timur released the localized pull. He landed with an undignified thump, scrambling to his feet. “Into the chasm? Are you mad? The lower sectors are being overrun! We should fortify!” “No time,” Timur snapped, already moving. “The Council isn’t sending help. They *want* this. The only way to save anyone is to stop it at the source.” His gaze swept over Barlas, then Shirin. “Shirin, you’re coming with me. Barlas, you gather any of the canyon commoners you can. Tell them… tell them I’ll create a path.” “A path?” Barlas puffed out his chest, completely missing the desperation in Timur’s voice. “Of course! The Great Timur will simply float the monsters away! He’ll use his secret atomic squeeze to turn them into dust!” Timur groaned internally. His improvised compression lie was already rotting beneath his feet. But there was no time to explain. He had to move. The image of the collapsing dormitory, of Ayla’s terrified face, was burned into his memory. He couldn't let it happen again. Not this time. They raced through the twisting, unstable corridors of the lower levels. The air grew thick with dust and the metallic tang of fear. The distant roars of unseen beasts grew closer, punctuated by crumbling rock and the frantic shouts of people. They found clusters of shivering tier-folk, mostly low-ranked scribes and apprentices, huddled in alcoves. The scent of brimstone and acrid sweat choked the corridor. Barlas, with a surprising amount of gravitas, began his impromptu recruitment speech, pointing dramatically at Timur. “Fear not, citizens! The Peerless Timur is here! He will clear the path to the fracture's core! His telekinetic technique will simply *float* all threats into oblivion!” Timur winced as he heard a few of the more cynical faces in the crowd scoff. “Float them? Boy, those are Skymaw brutes! You can’t float those rock-skinned beasts!” Just then, the ceiling above them shuddered. A shower of plaster and small stones heralded the arrival of the very creatures mentioned. Three hulking shapes of jagged basalt and leathery wings smashed through the ceiling, crimson eyes zeroing in on the corridor. Their roars were like grinding tectonic plates. Timur reacted instantly. Before the lead beast could drop its talons, he snapped his thumb and forefinger together in a clumsy pinch. He focused not on pushing, but on *condensing*. He visualized their already dense bodies becoming impossibly heavier, drawn inward, crushing under their own impossible mass. The first winged beast twisted in midair; ribbed leather tore, vitreous armor splintered, and with a wet crunch, the creature collapsed inward, scattering into black grit before touching floor. The other two, caught in the invisible field, screeched, their forms distorting, imploding with sickening speed. They vanished, leaving only faint trails of shimmering dust where they had been. A hush settled over the huddled refugees, gaze after gaze shifting from the dark drifts of sand to Timur's outstretched fingers. [Akashic Ledger Penalty: 500 Merit Points. Please improve your lying.] Timur ignored the script. The farce was cracking at the seams. Shirin tracked his knuckles with sharp, narrowing pupils. He kept his pinching hand out, trying to look casual, as if crushing monsters into dust was just a normal Tuesday. Barlas, however, was in his element. He beamed. “See?! The compression technique! He turned them to *ash*! Truly, Timur's talent knows no bounds!” He gestured for the awe-struck crowd to follow. “Come! To the Chasm! The Peerless Timur will protect us!” As the group cautiously moved forward, Shirin suddenly surged ahead, her hand shooting out to grab Timur’s tunic collar. Her grip was surprisingly strong, pulling him to a halt, her face inches from his. Her eyes, usually so guarded, blazed with an unmasked demand. “Timur,” she began, her voice low and cutting, “I saw what you did. I saw what you did to Rustam, and I saw what you just did to those gargoyles. Stop lying. Who are you, really?” Her intensity, the raw suspicion in her gaze, finally broke through Timur’s stubborn resolve. He couldn’t keep the charade up, not with this, not with the Chasm tearing open. He looked at Ayla, then back at Shirin, the words catching in his throat before he forced them out. “I’m… I lived through this once before,” he said, the confession scraping raw against his throat. Before Shirin could even process the impossible statement, a violent lurch shook the ground. A deafening roar erupted from deep within the earth, directly beneath them. The stone floor beneath Ayla, thin and fractured, gave way with a sickening crack. Ayla screamed, her small form plummeting into the gaping darkness below, swallowed by the dungeon’s core.
