Chapter 6 of 10
The Polite Prison Break

The echoes of Elder Thong-kam’s decree rattled the remaining Sky-Centipede exoskeletons from the ceiling. A dozen sect enforcers, clad in polished bronze lamellar armor and wielding ceremonial sabers, materialized within the Fifth Tier workshop, their faces grim. Their leader, a stern-faced woman with a topknot carved from jade, pointed her blade at Maliwan.
“Maliwan of the Fifth Tier, you are hereby under arrest for crimes against the Suvarnabhumi Expanse!”
Prince Virote, still slick with centipede ichor, bristled. “This is an outrage! She is under my royal protection! Who dares lay a hand on the future princess of the Asokaram Dynasty?!” He lunged forward, intending to interpose himself, but Maliwan moved with a swift, almost imperceptible grace, placing herself directly in his path.
“Oh, Prince Virote, how very… *assertive* of you,” Maliwan murmured, her smile tight. “However, I find myself in a rather unique research opportunity. The structural integrity of the Chedi’s lower tiers, particularly its correctional facilities, has always intrigued me. A firsthand assessment would be invaluable for my Mandala analysis. Perhaps a voluntary incarceration, for the sake of science, might be in order?” Her gaze met his, a flicker of warning in their depths. “It would be a profound demonstration of… *loyalty* to my academic pursuits.”
Prince Virote puffed out his chest, his indignation morphing into a preening smirk. “A test of my loyalty, you say? A trial to prove my unwavering commitment to your noble scholarly endeavors? Consider it done, my dear Maliwan! I shall endure the depths of their dungeons, for you!” He swept a theatrical bow, nearly tripping over a severed centipede leg.
Before Kiet could protest, Maliwan turned to him. “And Swordmaster Kiet, your presence would be equally beneficial. To observe the effects of prolonged confinement on one’s sword intent – a truly advanced cultivation technique, don’t you agree? Few masters have dared such a rigorous mental exercise.”
Kiet’s gaze flared with zealous understanding. “To refine the soul through stillness! To hone the blade of inner discipline amidst the shadows! A profound challenge, Junior Sister! I accept!” He slammed his shovel, still caked with Naga-swamp mud, onto the floor with a resonant thud.
The enforcers exchanged bewildered glances. The jade-topknotted captain merely grunted. “Very well. Take them. All three.”
Within minutes, Maliwan, Prince Virote, and Swordmaster Kiet found themselves in a damp, stone-walled cell deep beneath the Chedi, illuminated by a single, flickering tallow lantern. The air smelled of mildew and ancient despair. Virote immediately began pacing, rattling the rusted iron bars.
“I shall demand an audience with the Grand Abbot! This is an insult to the crown! They will rue the day they confined Prince Virote of Asokaram!”
Kiet, meanwhile, sat cross-legged in a corner, eyes closed, seemingly meditating. “The true prison is the mind, Prince. Our core remains free, an untamed torrent awaiting release. This darkness merely sharpens the edge.”
“Sharpen the edge?!” Virote scoffed. “I intend to *shatter* these bars! When I do, I shall carry Maliwan to freedom in my arms, a romantic rescue befitting a future empress!”
Kiet’s eyes snapped open. “Nonsense! My sword-hand will carve our path to liberty! It is *my* strength that will breach our route, true martial devotion made manifest!”
“My royal decree will make them tremble!”
“My disciplined steel will make them yield!”
Their bickering escalated, filling the claustrophobic cell with increasingly loud boasts. Maliwan sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. “Gentlemen, while your… *enthusiasm* is noted, I believe our escape might be better served by a more direct approach.”
Just then, a small, dark object rolled through the bars from the corridor, coming to rest at Maliwan’s feet. It was a corked vial, glowing with a soft, unstable violet light. A tiny, familiar crackling sound emanated from it.
“Oh, Gawin,” Maliwan murmured, a faint smile touching her lips. “Always so… *punctual*.”
Before either suitor could question the vial, it pulsed once, twice, then detonated with a thunderous *CRACK*! A concussive ring of raw, concentrated force ripped through the cell’s back wall, obliterating the ancient stone as if it were parchment. Dust, debris, and the acrid smell of ozone filled the air, revealing a gaping, perfectly round hole leading into a shadowed duct.
Through the dust, Gawin’s frantic face appeared. “Maliwan! Are you alright? I had to improvise with that… volatile charge sample you gave me after the Prince’s shift. It was the only thing I had that could punch through these archaic wards!” He coughed, waving away the smoke. “We have to go! Thong-kam’s guards are mobilizing!”
“Excellent work, Gawin,” Maliwan said, stepping gracefully through the smoking aperture. Virote and Kiet, momentarily stunned into silence by the sudden explosion, scrambled after her.
The shaft was narrow and winding, smelling of damp earth and disused machinery. Exposed ley-lines, some flickering with sickly green radiance, spiderwebbed across the low ceiling. As they navigated the labyrinthine tunnels, the suitors’ bickering resumed, echoing off the stone.
“I knew Gawin would come through for you, Maliwan! His loyalty is… *acceptable* for a subordinate, I suppose!” Virote declared, bumping his head on a low-hanging pipe.
“Hmph! Such raw, untamed force! If only he had channeled it with the discipline of the blade, it would have been a truly elegant escape!” Kiet countered, ducking under a dripping vent.
Maliwan’s patience, thin as a spider silk strand, finally snapped. She stopped abruptly, turning to face them in the oppressive gloom. Her voice, though still polite, carried an edge that cut off their bickering.
“Prince Virote, Swordmaster Kiet,” she began, her tone measured. “Your… *competitive zeal* is truly admirable. However, the path ahead leads to Thong-kam’s personal vault, where he keeps a stolen component critical to the realm’s continued existence. He will have his elite guards stationed there, likely infused with his own volatile power.”
She looked at each of them, her eyes gleaming in the dim light. “Such a choke point would require an extraordinary display of… *individual prowess*. An utterly suicidal, holding action against insurmountable odds, perhaps. One where two exceptionally powerful individuals might draw the enemy’s attention, allowing others to slip past unnoticed. A truly profound demonstration of… *selfless valor*.”
Virote straightened, puffing out his chest. “Selfless valor, you say? To be the shield that protects your delicate form? I accept! This will be my grandest romantic gesture yet!”
Kiet gripped his shovel like a greatsword. “To face a horde, alone, for the sake of the realm! This is the ultimate test of my martial resolve! Count on me, Junior Sister!”
Maliwan smiled, a thin, almost imperceptible curve of her lips. “Wonderful. Gawin and I will proceed to the main vault. The distraction should buy us precious minutes.”
Leaving the two suitors to prepare for their ‘selfless valor’ at the upcoming junction, Maliwan and Gawin navigated the final, twisting corridors. Soon, a massive, reinforced steel door, etched with ancient protective runes, loomed before them. It was clearly the entrance to a powerful vault.
“This is it, Maliwan,” Gawin whispered, his hand hovering over a complex runic lock. “The energy signature is… immense. Thong-kam’s been pouring everything into this.”
Maliwan pulled out a small, intricate toolset. “Fortunately, his arrogance prevents him from considering truly *subtle* entry. He focuses on brute force wards, not delicate dissections.” Her nimble fingers danced across the runes, bypassing the magical safeguards with practiced ease. The heavy door hissed, then slowly, silently, swung inward.
They stepped into a cavernous chamber, pulsating with raw, concentrated power. In the center, suspended by invisible forces, Elder Thong-kam meditated on a pedestal. His skin was mottled, his eyes glowing with an unnatural emerald light. And in his chest, grafted directly into his flesh, pulsing with the rhythmic thrum of the continent’s core, was the shimmering, golden Mandala Heart.
