Chapter 10: The Pact of Iron and Velvet
1.6k words
Air in the study felt heavy, saturated with the rich scent of old paper, expensive leather, and the distinct trace of Namjoon's sandalwood cologne. My chest burned with every shallow breath. The ink-like script of his name on my wrist throbbed with a low, persistent heat that seemed to synchronize with the rapid pounding of my heart.
Clenching my jaw, I kept my eyes locked on his broad chest, refusing to look up into his piercing gaze. He stood only a few feet away, a towering figure of quiet strength and intense concentration. The sheer size of him was overwhelming, his broad shoulders casting a long shadow across the polished wooden floorboards of his private library.
"Step back," I managed to say, my voice sounding incredibly fragile in the vast, quiet room.
Namjoon stopped instantly, his heavy leather boots halting mid-stride. A muscle in his jaw twitched, a telltale sign of the immense effort it took for him to restrain himself. His dark, intelligent eyes burned with an uncharacteristic, possessive fire that made my skin tingle with a dangerous mixture of fear and desire.
"You're asking for distance when every single fiber of our bodies is begging for the exact opposite," he said. His voice was a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated straight through the floor and up my spine. "Do you feel that, Y/N? Our hearts are beating in perfect sync. You can't deny this."
"I can," I lied, forcing myself to take a step backward until the edge of his massive mahogany desk pressed hard against my lower back. "I must deny it."
My hand flew to my chest, trying to physically steady the frantic rhythm of my heart. The memory of our first direct touch from the previous hour still vibrated through my veins like a high-voltage current. It had been beautiful, terrifyingly so, pulling me into a depth of connection I was entirely unprepared for.
Growing up, I had learned early that relying on anyone else was a direct route to heartbreak. My parents' profound emotional neglect had left me isolated, forcing me to find solace in the quiet, predictable world of art restoration. Old paintings didn't demand vulnerability; they didn't leave you when you weren't enough.
But this man, this global icon, was demanding everything. He wanted my soul, my body, my absolute surrender to a bond I hadn't asked for.
"If I am going to stay here," I declared, trying to inject a sense of iron resolve into my trembling voice, "we need rules. I will not be a captive, and I will not be your plaything."
Namjoon's eyes narrowed instantly, a dark, dangerous flash crossing his features. "A plaything? Is that what you think this is? Is that what I am to you?"
"I don't know what you are to me," I admitted, my voice dropping to a whisper. "You are a superstar. A man chased by millions of adoring fans. I am a quiet girl who hides behind centuries-old oil paintings. We do not make sense."
"We make perfect sense," he countered, his voice dripping with an intense, quiet certainty. "The universe chose us. My skin bears your name, and yours bears mine. There is no mistake, Y/N."
"The universe doesn't have to deal with the paparazzi," I retorted, crossing my arms over my chest to form a protective barrier. "Or the obsessive fans. Or the intense media scrutiny. I want my life, Namjoon. I want my independence."
Silence stretched between us, heavy and thick. He stared at me, analyzing my defensive posture, his brilliant mind clearly working through the logistics of my resistance. He was a leader, a strategist, and I could see the exact moment he realized that pushing me too hard would only make me run faster.
"Very well," he said, his posture relaxing slightly, though his eyes remained hyper-focused on me. "Name your terms."
Relief washed over me, though it was accompanied by a traitorous, aching disappointment—a secret part of my soul wanted him to reject my boundaries and pull me into his arms. I ruthlessly crushed that feeling.
"First," I began, counting on my trembling fingers. "This arrangement is strictly secret. No one outside of your immediate circle can ever know about this bond. If the media finds out, if my life is upended by the public eye, I am gone."
"Agreed," Namjoon said without hesitation. "I have no intention of sharing you with the world anyway. The media is a beast I wouldn't wish on anyone. I will protect your privacy with everything I have."
His fierce, protective tone made my heart flutter, but I pushed through the sensation. "Second, I will stay in your guest suite. On the opposite side of this apartment. We will not share a bed, and we will not behave like a couple."
His jaw clenched so tightly the bone beneath his skin looked sharp. The thought of sleeping apart clearly went against every possessive instinct his soulmate bond was screaming at him, but he nodded slowly. "And the physical pull? The pain of separation?"
"We will manage it scientifically," I proposed, trying to sound like a rational professional. "We will allocate specific, brief periods of contact to satisfy the bond. A handhold. A touch of the wrists. Only when the physical symptoms become too difficult to manage."
"Scientifically," he repeated, a dark, mocking amusement dancing in his eyes. "You want to schedule our touch like a business meeting. You want to negotiate the terms of our souls."
"Yes," I said firmly, refusing to let his teasing break my resolve. "And third, this is strictly professional. Outside of the necessary physical contact to keep us from falling ill, we are merely roommates. You have your life, and I have mine."
Namjoon let out a low, humorless laugh. He walked over to his desk, pulling out a heavy, high-quality sheet of cream paper and a sleek black fountain pen.
"You want a contract," he murmured, his gaze locked on mine as he unscrewed the cap of the pen. "You want to bind a cosmic connection with ink and paper."
"Ink is permanent," I replied, my voice steadying. "It is reliable. It doesn't lie, and it doesn't leave."
"So is this bond, sweetheart," he whispered, stepping closer until he was standing right beside me at the desk. "But if a contract makes you feel safe enough to stay, I will write it."
Leaning over the desk, his broad chest nearly brushing my shoulder, he began to write. The scratching of the gold nib was the only sound in the room. His handwriting was beautiful—elegant, sweeping, and commanding.
*Clause One,* he wrote. *Y/N will reside in the private guest suite of Kim Namjoon's residence to mitigate the physical distress of the soulmate bond.*
*Clause Two,* he continued, reading the words aloud in a low, seductive rumble that made my pulse race. *Both parties agree to maintain a strictly professional, non-romantic, and non-physical dynamic, unless mutually agreed upon for health reasons.*
*Clause Three,* he added, pausing to look up at me, his eyes dark with a possessive intensity. *The existence of this bond and Y/N's presence in the residence will remain strictly confidential.*
"There," he said, sliding the paper toward me. He held out the fountain pen, his fingers brushing against mine as I reached for it.
Instantly, a jolt of pure, electric warmth shot up my arm, settling deep in my chest. My breath caught in my throat, and my knees buckled slightly. Namjoon didn't let go of the pen. He held it, keeping his fingers pressed against mine, forcing me to endure the intoxicating rush of our connection.
"See?" he whispered, his face inches from mine. "You can sign whatever you want. You can build your walls. But your body knows the truth. You belong to me, Y/N."
"I belong to myself," I gasped, pulling the pen from his grip with a sudden burst of strength. My hand was shaking so badly I could barely hold the sleek instrument.
Determination fueled me. I pressed the nib to the paper, my signature shaky but clear. I was drawing a line in the sand. I was protecting my heart from the devastating pain of loving someone who was entirely out of my league.
Namjoon watched me, his gaze heavy and possessive. He didn't look at the paper; he looked only at me, his eyes tracking the nervous flutter of my eyelashes, the flush on my cheeks, the way my chest rose and fell with each shallow breath.
"It is done," I said, setting the pen down with a click. "The pact is signed."
"A pact of iron and velvet," he murmured, a dangerous smile playing on his lips. "You think you've won your freedom, but you've only agreed to let me keep you close. I can play this game, sweetheart. Let's see how long your little rules last."
Panic flared in my chest at his confidence, but before I could reply, a sudden, loud commotion erupted from the hallway outside.
Heavy, running footsteps echoed on the hardwood floors, accompanied by a chaotic burst of laughter and shouting.
My heart leaped into my throat. Who on earth could be in his highly secure, private home at this hour? Namjoon's eyes widened in genuine surprise before his expression shifted to absolute exasperation.
"Namjoon-hyung!" a bright, energetic voice bellowed from just outside the study door.
Suddenly, the heavy oak door was kicked open with a dramatic flourish.
As Y/N signs the hastily drafted agreement, a loud, cheerful voice booms from the doorway as Jungkook, J-Hope, and Suga burst in, carrying takeout boxes and shouting, "We came to see our new sister-in-law!"
