“...all remaining assets seized by the Crown!” Zilar sagged against the hidden archway, his breath catching in ragged gasps. His face, already pale from the truth serum, now held a ghastly green tinge. The courier's mandate hung over the worktable like a blade. “The Obsidian Wastes,” he whispered, a sound like crumbling stone. “And my work… seized.” Mazari didn't waste a second on sentiment. The scent of ozone from the broken truth vial still pricked at her nostrils, a reminder of the raw, unpolished ambition she’d just exposed. But that was for later. Now, there was a deadline. A crushing, unforgiving dawn. “Wastes, shmestes,” she scoffed, already striding towards the mess of vials and beakers. Her gaze swept over the glimmering array, a treasure trove of potential. “We are not becoming desert nomads, Zilar. Not when you’re sitting on a fortune in scented brilliance.” She snatched a small, ornate bottle from a lacquered stand. Its contents shimmered with the iridescence of a dying nebula. "What’s this one? A quick nerve tincture? Or something to make me sprout wings?" Zilar pushed off the stones, his fingers knotting into his sleeves. "Mazari, you don't understand! The Conservatoire is a viper pit! And the patent clerks... they'll never approve anything this late, let alone from *me*." He gestured wildly at his threadbare robes, his exile wing. “I’m a non-entity! A forgotten joke!” “Precisely why we’ll make a grand entrance,” Mazari announced, already uncorking the bottle. A delicate, spicy aroma, like cedarwood and frost-kissed citrus, unfurled into the air. “This one. What does it do?” He watched her, horrified. "That's... that's 'Supreme Bravery'. A highly concentrated, fast-acting aura enhancer. It projects an unyielding conviction in one's own capabilities, often to a... flamboyant degree." “Perfect.” Mazari tucked the vial into the fold of her gown. “Get dressed, Zilar. Find something that doesn’t scream ‘doomed and depressed’. We're going to the Azure estate, and we're going to file your 'Aura-Enhancing Fragrances' before dawn." He opened his mouth to protest, but Mazari was already halfway to the main door. “And for the love of the Gilded Meritocracy, try not to hyperventilate on the way. We need to project ruthless ambition, not a sneezing fit." The Azure Conservatoire glittered under the pre-dawn sky, a sprawling sapphire edifice designed to intimidate. Its spires scraped the low-hanging mist, reflecting the iridescent glow of the city’s early lamplight. Carriages, many bearing the crests of prominent syndicates, already lined the cobblestone drive, their occupants arriving early to claim their economic territories. Mazari, now draped in a gown of midnight blue silk that seemed to absorb all light, marched Zilar through the grand atrium. She’d found him a tunic of deep emerald and a polished silver clasp, an outfit that did little to disguise his lingering anxiety but at least didn't scream ‘pauper’ quite so loudly. His steps were hesitant, his gaze darting around the opulent hall, thick with the scent of rival luxury goods. Mazari, by contrast, moved with the swagger of a victorious warlord, her head held high. She ignored the whispers and pointed glances, the thinly veiled derision aimed at Zilar, the exiled prince, now paired with the notoriously unhinged Lady Qen. They found the Crown Patent Office on the third floor, a hushed chamber lined with towering archives. A portly registrar, Lord Pylos, sat behind a desk piled with scrolls and seals, his spectacles perched precariously on his nose. Before Mazari could even present their case, a familiar, saccharine voice cut through the quiet. “Mazari! What a delightful… surprise.” Sulea Qen emerged from a nearby alcove, Commander Vargos at her side. She wore a gown the color of fresh cream, exquisitely tailored, and her smile was a perfect, predatory curve. Vargos, looking uncomfortable in his formal uniform, offered Mazari a stiff nod, his gaze flicking away almost immediately. “Sulea,” Mazari returned, her tone flat, utterly devoid of warmth. “Still dragging your new acquisition around? I thought you’d have had him melted down for parts by now.” A ripple of nervous laughter spread through the few early-morning applicants. Sulea’s smile tightened, but she held her composure. “Ever the wit, Mazari. Some things never change. Unlike, it seems, your choice in… partners.” She looked Zilar up and down, curling her lip. “Poor Prince Zilar. Still trying to peddle your dusty potions, I see.” Zilar flinched, shrinking a little further behind Mazari. Lord Pylos, the registrar, cleared his throat, his eyes darting between the two noblewomen. He visibly straightened his tunic, as if preparing for a storm. “Lady Sulea, Commander Vargos,” Pylos said, his voice oozing deference. "A pleasure to see you both. I trust your recent submission for 'Veridian Bloom Elixirs' went smoothly yesterday?" “Flawlessly, Lord Pylos,” Sulea purred, giving the man a knowing look. “We appreciate your… efficiency.” She glanced at a heavy pouch discreetly placed on the corner of Pylos’s desk. “Some partnerships are simply destined for success, wouldn’t you agree?” Pylos’s jowls quivered. “Indeed, Lady Sulea. A truly… potent alliance.” He turned to Mazari and Zilar, his expression hardening. “Now, what can I do for you, Lady Qen? I assume this is about Prince Zilar’s… patent application?” His voice dripped with thinly veiled contempt. "We require an immediate filing for Prince Zilar's Aura-Enhancing Fragrances," Mazari stated, nudging Zilar forward. "A full dossier on the line is prepared." Pylos didn't even bother to glance at the scroll Zilar timidly offered. He waved a dismissive hand. "Impossible. We have a backlog of filings spanning weeks. "And certain... considerations must be made for the quality and market viability of any new creation. Especially from… less established houses.” He sent a pointed look at Zilar’s worn tunic. "I'm afraid, Prince, your dossier will be reviewed in due course. Perhaps by the Royal Audit, if you’re lucky. But certainly not by dawn.” Sulea’s triumphant smirk was a raw, visceral blow. Her eyes gleamed with the certainty of her foreknowledge, a silent assertion that she knew exactly how Mazari’s pathetic attempts always ended. Mazari’s past self would have wilted, humiliated. But Mazari Qen, the amnesiac mastermind, felt a spark ignite deep within her. "I see," Mazari said, her voice calm. She drew the tincture vial from her gown. "So, you're telling me that despite the decree, and the obvious genius before you, you simply cannot be bothered to fulfill your duties?" Pylos scoffed, his face twisting into a sneer. “My duties, Lady Qen, include upholding the standards of the Conservatoire, not catering to desperate, last-minute whims. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have actual, profitable patents to process.” He reached for a stack of papers, pointedly ignoring them. Mazari’s eyes narrowed. With a sharp downward strike, she brought the vial against the edge of Pylos's desk. The glass shattered with a sharp crack, spraying the iridescent liquid directly over his face and the front of his pristine white tunic. The spicy, citrusy aroma instantly filled the air, thick and intoxicating. Pylos froze, his eyes blinking rapidly as the liquid coated his skin. A moment passed, then another. His spectacles slipped down his nose, but he didn’t seem to notice. His eyes glittered with manic intensity. A flush crept up his neck, and his shoulders squared. "Actual, profitable patents?" Pylos boomed, his tone turning fiercely resonant with fierce indignation. He slammed his fist on the desk, making the scrolls jump. “Are you daring to suggest, Lady Qen, that I am anything less than a discerning arbiter of imperial genius? That my judgment is swayed by… paltry coin?” He snatched up the pouch Sulea had left. “This insult! This pathetic attempt at manipulation!” With a roar, he flung the pouch across the room, scattering gold coins across the polished marble floor. Sulea gasped, stepping backward onto her hem. Vargos looked utterly bewildered. Pylos rounded on Sulea, his chest puffed out, a bizarre, almost comical bravado radiating from him. “Lady Qen! Your ‘Veridian Bloom Elixirs’ are a second-rate imitation of the Zylos line from two seasons past! And you, Commander, are a bland, predictable fool for falling for such transparent, uninspired flattery!” Vargos stiffened, his hand going to the hilt of his ceremonial sword. Sulea stood frozen, glaring at Mazari. This wasn’t how it was supposed to happen. Mazari was supposed to be cast aside, defeated, predictable. Pylos, saturated in the distilled audacity, snatched Zilar's dossier. He riffled through the pages with a speed and aggression that belied his previous sluggishness. "Aura-Enhancing Fragrances! Brilliant! Revolutionary! Why, the sheer audacity of combining alchemical scent with emotional projection! This is precisely the kind of innovation the Gilded Meritocracy demands!” He seized a heavy brass seal, his hand trembling with fervent zeal. “This is a masterwork! It deserves immediate certification!” *THWACK!* The brass stamp slammed onto the parchment, ringing through the silent office. Zilar's name and his creation were officially logged. Sulea stared, utterly aghast. Her eyes darted from the now-heroic, bellowing Pylos, to the sealed document, and finally to Mazari, who offered her a thin, triumphant smile. The future, Sulea realized with sickening clarity, was twisting. Mazari wasn’t playing by the old rules. She wasn’t the doomed, passive fool Sulea remembered. Just then, Vico, Sulea’s loyal spy, emerged from a side corridor, burdened with an impossible stack of luxury shopping bags, the silks and jewels spilling from them in a cascade of excess. He caught Mazari’s eye over the mountain of merchandise. A brief, almost imperceptible wink passed between them, a silent acknowledgment of the game’s swift, brutal turn. “Pylos, you imbecile! You’ll be ruined!” Sulea shrieked, finally finding her voice, but the registrar merely preened, basking in his drug-induced glory. Mazari merely inclined her head. “The market has spoken, Sulea. Some destinies, it seems, are simply too stubborn to be stolen.” She took the sealed document from Pylos’s trembling, proud hand, securing Zilar’s future, at least for now. As Mazari guided a stunned Zilar towards the exit, Vargos broke away from Sulea, his face a complex mixture of anger and something else, something she couldn't quite decipher. He intercepted Mazari in a secluded corridor, his hand gently but firmly gripping her arm. The scent of his own military-issue cedar soap, sharp and clean, cut through the lingering perfume. “Mazari,” he said, his voice low, raw with a confusing vulnerability. His eyes searched hers, clouded by an emotion that looked suspiciously like regret. “Why did you let me go so easily?”
