Chapter 7 of 10
The Anti-Virus Strikes
828 words
The metallic hum intensified, rattling the very flagstones beneath Tavvio’s feet. Vessa’s daggers, still embedded in the fading wireframe that was once Lord Kastor, vibrated with a shrill whine before dissipating into faint blue motes. The towering lattice of cyan code pulsed, growing denser, more chaotic. Jagged polygons ripped through the air where a moment ago the sanctum’s serene woven hangings had hung. Walls blurred, floor tiles warped, and even the air began to feel… wrong.
[ERROR: ENVIRONMENTAL PHYSICS RECALIBRATED. CHEAT COMMANDS DISABLED IN ZONE: SANCTUM_PRIME. ALL ENTITY EXPLOITS NULLIFIED.]
“No,” Tavvio breathed, his breath sticking in his dry throat. His mind, honed for years on finding the cracks in reality, suddenly hit a wall. He tried to mentally map a path to clip through the now-warped archway, but his usual mental anchors, the subtle misalignments, simply weren’t there. It was as if the world itself had decided to play by the rules, just for him.
The Anti-Virus construct, now a swirling vortex of cobalt lines and sharp angles, solidified into a monstrous parody of Kastor. Its head, a polygon nightmare, slowly turned towards Tavvio. “You… a rogue developer… attempting to corrupt the main quest line,” the synthesized voice grated, now laced with digital static. A single, glowing digit detached from its hand, hovering for a moment before pointing directly at Tavvio.
[COMMAND: DELETE_ITEM. TARGET: TAVVIO. ITEM: TOME_OF_NULLSPACE.]
A burning sensation flared in Tavvio’s pocket. He instinctively reached for it, but it was too late. A burst of blue light erupted from his side, and the familiar, heavy weight of the Tome of the Null-Space vanished, leaving only an empty space. His invulnerability, his only remaining cheat, was gone.
Vessa, having seen her blades fail, scrambled to her feet, her expression a mix of fury and dawning horror. Rillan, always quick to action despite his lack of understanding, drew his gleaming, uncharged sword. “Grandmaster Tavvio! What foul sorcery is this?”
“It’s not sorcery, Rillan,” Tavvio muttered, his voice tight. “It’s… code.” He took a half-step back, scanning the environment frantically for any new exploit, any tiny anomaly. Nothing. The room was perfectly, maliciously aligned.
The Anti-Virus warden pulsed, its form expanding, filling the sanctum with an oppressive hum. “Anomaly detected. Threat level: Critical. Executing eradication protocol.” The glowing digit at the end of its arm swelled, coalescing into a sphere of pure, crackling deletion energy. It locked onto Tavvio, absolute and unavoidable.
“Tavvio!” Vessa shrieked, launching herself forward, but she was too far. The energy sphere ripped through the air, faster than thought, a laser of reality-unmaking light.
Before Tavvio could even flinch, Rillan, with a wordless roar, threw himself directly into the path of the beam. The Chosen One’s body, radiating a brief, blinding white light, became a shield. The deletion energy slammed into him with the sound of shattering glass. The white glow flared, then vanished, replaced by a dull, grey pallor. Rillan crumpled to the ground, his sword clattering beside him. His stare remained fixed on the ceiling, unblinking and vacant.
[ENTITY: RILLAN. STATUS: FATAL_ERROR. LIFE_FORCE: 0. STATS: 0. PURGE_IN_30_SECONDS.]
Oshni’s piercing scream ripped through the air, raw and utterly devoid of her usual composure. She rushed to Rillan’s side, her wealthy silks rustling, her face ashen. Her hands, usually so confident, trembled as she hovered them over Rillan’s chest. “No! Not him! Not my darling Rillan!” Her gaze snapped to Tavvio, then to the hovering System message. A manic sheen showed across her irises. “Half a minute? I’ll buy him more time! System! Take my gold! All of it!”
She plunged her hand into a satchel, pulling out a fistful of shining gold coins – the same currency that once formed lines of code in the Developer Room. She threw them into the air, a rain of digital currency. “One thousand trade marks! For a full revive! Two thousand! For invulnerability! Three! For another hour! Take it all! I’ll buy the whole *world* if I have to!”
[TRANSACTION INITIATED. ITEM: PARTIAL_REVIVE. COST: 50,000 GLIMMER-MARKS. DURATION: 30_SECONDS. ITEM: RESPITE_WINDOW. COST: 100,000 GLIMMER-MARKS. DURATION: 10_SECONDS. ITEM: IMMORTALITY_FRAGMENT. COST: 500,000 GLIMMER-MARKS. DURATION: 1_SECOND.]
[SYSTEM_OVERLOAD. USER: OSHNI. WEALTH_OVERFLOW. PURCHASING… RESPITE_EXTENSION. DURATION: 30_SECONDS. APPLYING TO ENTITY: RILLAN. NEW PURGE_TIMER: 30_SECONDS. REMAINING_FUNDS: INSUFFICIENT FOR COMPLETE REVIVE. SUGGESTION: LOCATE ALTERNATE PAYMENT METHOD.]
The blue text flashed, less sarcastic than usual, almost desperate. Rillan’s grey pallor didn’t change, but the countdown above him refreshed. A scant half-minute. Tavvio felt a surge of cold fury. This wasn’t a game anymore. Not to Oshni, not to Vessa, and certainly not to him.
He looked at the Anti-Virus, now a solid, unyielding sentinel of deletion code. The physics-locked room offered no escape. No clips, no skips, no out-of-bounds. Just raw, unyielding code. Tavvio’s gaze swept the floor, the walls, the ceiling. Then, his attention snagged on something. Just beneath the Anti-Virus construct’s central aperture, where its core would be, a single floor tile. It was infinitesimally, almost imperceptibly, out of alignment. A single pixel off-grid.
