Chapter 9 of 10

Atonement in Three Parts

857 words

The morning sun, usually a cheerful companion, felt like an interrogation lamp as it spilled into The Purrfect Cup. Ornella moved through the familiar space with a heavy, unnatural grace, each ceramic mug rattling sharply against the wooden counter. Beppe, oblivious, hummed a tune about alien probes while polishing the espresso machine to a blinding gleam. He’d spent the entire ride back from the warehouse recounting theories on how Fabio’s 'Interdimensional Dog Syndicate' had infiltrated Galliano Industries. Ornella had offered only strained hums in response. Valerio's face from the warehouse still lingered in her mind—pale, stunned, staring at her discarded fake mustache. She was scooping coffee grounds, measuring out dark roast by the ounce, when the bell above the door chimed. Ornella glanced up, expecting elderly Signora Rossi for her usual cortado. Instead, the figure framed in the doorway made her hand clench around the scoop, scattering dark dust across the counter. It was Valerio Galliano. He stood there, not in his usual impeccably tailored suits, but in a charcoal jacket that seemed to hang a little too loosely on his frame. His hair, typically slicked back with meticulous precision, was slightly dishevelled, and deep, bruised shadows bloomed beneath his eyes. He looked, for the first time since she’d met him, utterly undone. In his left hand, he carried a gleaming chrome cat carrier, the mesh door revealing the wide, unblinking emerald eyes of Il Magnifico. Valerio’s gaze swept the cafe, lingering on the few early customers before settling on Ornella. He swallowed, the collar of his shirt visibly loose against his throat. He took a hesitant step inside, then another, until he stood awkwardly in the middle of the room, like a statue misplaced from its plinth. Beppe, who had been mid-rant about subliminal messages in cat food commercials, paused, his rag frozen in mid-air. A couple sharing a brioche at the corner table stopped chewing. “Signorina Polidori,” Valerio’s voice was hoarse, stripped of its usual imperiousness. It was a formal address she hadn’t heard from him in weeks, a stark contrast to the whispered 'Ornella' from the night before. He didn’t meet her eyes directly, his gaze fixed somewhere on the polished floor tiles. “I… I owe you an apology.” The words dropped into the quiet shop with startling clarity. Beppe’s mouth had fallen open, the polishing rag now dangling forgotten from his fingers. Ornella felt a prickle of heat rise on her neck. An apology? From *him*? Valerio finally lifted his gaze, meeting hers. His irises, normally sharp as cut flint, stayed fixed on her collarbone. “My actions against you and your business were unconscionable. They were based on a lie, a fabrication concocted by a disgruntled employee. Fabio’s confession last night… it confirmed what I should have seen all along. My judgment was clouded by… by a desire for retribution that blinded me to the truth.” He paused, taking a shallow breath. “I was wrong. Deeply, profoundly wrong.” He reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulling out a slim, official-looking document. His hand trembled slightly as he extended it towards her. “This is for you.” Ornella took it, her fingers brushing his. The paper was thick cream vellum, bearing an embossed notary stamp. She unfolded it slowly, her eyes scanning the official seals and legal jargon. It was a deed. A deed to the ‘Aromas of Altura’ coffee bean supply chain. Her family’s original, ancestral supplier. The one Valerio Industries had acquired. The one he had terminated her contract with. “I bought it back,” Valerio stated, his voice a little steadier now, though still devoid of its usual bluster. “Under a new subsidiary, of course, to ensure its independence. It’s yours. To do with as you wish. To re-establish your family’s legacy.” Ornella’s vision blurred. The rich parchment in her hands, the rustle of the paper, felt unreal. This wasn’t just an apology. It was a grand, impossible gesture. The entire reason she had glued on synthetic mutton chops and stuffed wool padding into an oversized suit was now printed on official stationery before her. He continued, a quiet recitation of facts, not a plea for absolution. “The corrupt health inspector has been terminated. All fabricated complaints against The Purrfect Cup have been retracted. I’ve also posted a full public retraction on all relevant social media platforms, along with a… a glowing review of your establishment. It should go some way towards repairing the damage to your reputation.” He swallowed, his gaze dropping again. “There is no forgiveness I can ask for that would suffice. I simply… wanted you to know that I am attempting to make amends.” Just then, a soft, insistent mewling began to emanate from the carrier. Il Magnifico, sensing Ornella’s proximity, was growing agitated. His green eyes stared out through the mesh, fixed solely on her. Valerio set the carrier down on an empty barstool. “He… he won’t stop. He hasn’t slept since… since last night. He refuses to eat, refuses to be groomed. All he does is look for you.” He gestured vaguely at the carrier. “He misses Orso. I… I miss Orso, too. I was a fool.”
