Chapter 6 of 10
Crash Override

The note from her grandmother, with its stark pronouncement—‘The system is not the cure, Yoona. It's the diagnosis’—ignited a frantic urgency within Shim Yoona. The external hard drive felt heavy in her hand, a digital time capsule she’d ignored for years. This wasn't just data; it was a final message, a challenge from the only person who had ever truly seen her. She swept a stack of investor reports off her minimalist glass coffee table, replacing them with the hard drive, a tangled array of power cables, and her custom-built NEXUS-X laptop. The living room, usually strictly functional, began its transformation into a clandestine command center.
Hours bled into one another. Yoona’s fingers flew across the keyboard, a relentless blur of motion. She deployed every encryption-cracking algorithm NEXUS had ever developed, then dug deeper, recalling forgotten coding languages from her university days, even a few obscure techniques Hye-jin had taught her. The monitor glowed, a kaleidoscope of hexadecimal code and cascading data streams. Each successful bypass of a layered security protocol felt like a tiny victory, a fragment of her grandmother’s mind yielding its secrets.
Mochi, usually draped elegantly on his custom orthopedic pet bed, padded restlessly. He nudged her hand, a soft whine escaping his tiny throat. Yoona shooed him away with an absent gesture, her gaze fixed on the monitor. “Not now, Mochi. This is important.”
Around midday, Seo Ji-han appeared, an insulated bento box in one hand, a small, vibrant bouquet of chamomile in the other. He took in the scene: Yoona, hair disheveled, eyes rimmed with exhaustion, surrounded by glowing displays, empty coffee cups, and the ever-present holographic interface displaying her depleting 'Remaining Lifespan'.
“Yoona-ssi,” he began, his voice a gentle remonstrance. “You look like you’ve been wrestling a server farm. When was the last time you slept?”
She didn’t look up. “Sleep is a luxury I can’t afford. I’m close, Ji-han. I can feel it.”
He set the bento box down on the only clear space left on the coffee table. “You won’t get answers by burning yourself out. Eat something. And Mochi looks like he’s about to file a grievance for neglect.”
Mochi, emboldened by Ji-han’s presence, let out a plaintive bark and then nudged Yoona’s ankle with his nose. She flinched, pulling her foot away.
“Just leave it,” Yoona snapped, her voice sharper than intended. “And please, take Mochi. I need absolute quiet.”
Ji-han’s expression tightened, the usual easygoing smile fading. “You think I don’t understand urgency? I’ve stayed up for three nights straight with a dog whose owner dumped him, thinking he was dying. I know what it’s like to feel like time is running out. But you need to breathe.”
“You don’t understand *this*,” she retorted, finally tearing her gaze from the keyboard to fix him with a furious glare. “You have no idea what’s at stake! You can’t possibly comprehend the… the absolute finality of it. This isn’t about a stray dog, Ji-han. This is about *my* life, my… *existence*. And if I don’t figure this out, everything is gone.” Her voice cracked on the last word, betraying a terror she refused to acknowledge.
Mochi, sensing the escalation, whimpered. He backed away from Yoona, tail tucked, and scurried behind Ji-han’s legs, peeking out with wide, worried eyes.
“Just leave me alone!” Yoona yelled, the sound echoing in the high-ceilinged room. “You can’t help. Nobody can.”
Ji-han stood frozen for a moment, his hand halfway to Mochi. His eyes, usually so kind, held a glint of genuine hurt. He nodded slowly, a single, decisive movement. “Alright, Yoona-ssi. If that’s what you want.” He knelt, scooped up the trembling Mochi, and walked silently towards the door. The apartment felt unnaturally quiet after the click of the lock.
Yoona stared at the closed door, a strange emptiness settling in her chest, a stark contrast to the burning frustration that had just consumed her. Her holographic interface shimmered.
[Remaining Lifespan: 14 days, 7 hours, 32 minutes]
She took a shaky breath and forced her attention back to the screen. Another layer of encryption peeled back, revealing a folder labeled ‘Chronos_Logs’. Chronos. Time. Fate.
Her fingers hovered over the final key press. One more command, and the core archive would be accessible. A surge of triumph, cold and sharp, coursed through her.
Then, her secure NEXUS comms link buzzed, an urgent, insistent tone reserved for critical alerts. It was Chief Min-jun, her head of security.
“CEO Shim, urgent report. Board member Park has convened an unscheduled emergency board meeting. He’s attempting a vote of no confidence, claiming your recent ‘unpredictable behavior’ and ‘neglect of executive duties’ are jeopardizing the company’s stability. They’re starting now.”
Park. The corporate espionage was a red herring, a distraction while he plotted this. A coup. While she was literally fighting for her life, he was trying to steal her empire.
“Connect me to the live feed,” she commanded, her voice dangerously low, stripped of all emotion. “And prepare my vehicle. I’m coming in.”
The display in front of her split, one half still showing the cryptic ‘Chronos_Logs’, the other streaming the NEXUS boardroom. Park stood at the head of the polished obsidian table, a smug smirk on his face as he addressed the board. The room was packed, a sea of calculating faces.
Yoona’s face was a mask of glacial composure, her gaze fixed on the feed. She watched Park with an intensity that could shatter steel. This was the corporate jungle she knew, the game she was born to play. But this time, the stakes were different. This time, she had something to lose beyond market share.
A hand, surprisingly gentle, settled on her shoulder. Yoona flinched, her muscles tensing, ready to lash out. She turned to see Ji-han. He hadn’t left. Mochi was tucked securely under his arm, peering out with his wet, anxious eyes. Ji-han’s expression was unreadable, but his touch was steady, grounding.
“Go,” he said, his voice a quiet rumble against the sudden silence of the room. “Mochi and I will be here when you get back.”
