Chapter 2 of 10
Terms of Endearment, Non-Negotiable

The chime of the penthouse entrance, a discreet melody rather than an insistent ring, ripped Yoona from a particularly unhelpful spreadsheet. Seo Ji-han was punctual. Precisely three minutes early, in fact. Her meticulously planned schedule, already tight, allowed for this minor deviation. What it did not account for was the sheer, chaotic warmth he brought with him.
He stood framed in the doorway, a canvas tote bag slung over one shoulder, its canvas worn and softened with use, a stark contrast to the gleaming, untouched surface of her minimalist foyer. He wore a crisp, light-blue button-down shirt, sleeves rolled to his forearms, revealing strong, capable hands. A faint, pleasant scent of pet shampoo and something vaguely citrusy drifted into her sterile air.
“Dr. Seo,” Yoona said, her voice flat, devoid of welcome. She gestured vaguely towards the cavernous living area. “Please come in.”
Ji-han stepped inside, his gaze sweeping over the polished marble floors, the towering abstract sculpture, the singular, expensive piece of art adorning the far wall. His smile, however, remained unfazed. “Ms. Shim. It’s a pleasure to be here. What a… spacious home.”
Before Yoona could dissect his measured politeness, a blur of cream fur launched itself from behind a monolithic sectional. Mochi, usually a creature of discerning, almost royal, aloofness, scampered straight past Yoona’s ankles and, with a series of excited yips, launched himself at Ji-han’s shins.
Ji-han chuckled, a rich, genuine sound that seemed to vibrate through the quiet apartment. He crouched, effortlessly catching the tiny dog mid-leap. “Well, hello there, little Mochi! You’re even more handsome than your pictures.” He scratched behind Mochi’s ears, and the dog, a notorious snob when it came to human touch, leaned into the affection, his tail wagging furiously, a fluffy metronome of joy.
Yoona watched, a frown deepening between her perfectly sculpted brows. Mochi had never reacted this way to anyone who wasn’t her. Never. It was irritating. And, a tiny, almost imperceptible part of her admitted, a little bit relieving. Perhaps this baffling human was, in fact, Mochi’s ideal companion. The holographic interface chose that precise moment to chime in.

Yoona blinked. “Ambient stress levels?” she muttered, dismissing the absurdity as another glitch. She cleared her throat. “Dr. Seo. We have much to discuss.”
Ji-han stood, Mochi still cradled in one arm, a small, contented lump of fur. “Of course, Ms. Shim. But first,” he reached into his worn tote bag, producing a neatly folded stack of papers, “I’ve prepared my own proposal for Mochi’s care.”
Yoona stared at the document he extended. It wasn’t a contract, not in the traditional sense. The NEXUS logo emblazoned on her own meticulously drafted, binding legal agreement felt like a bludgeon compared to this deceptively simple document. She took it, her fingers brushing against his, a fleeting contact that felt surprisingly warm.
“Your… proposal?” Yoona scanned the pages. Her gaze snagged on bullet points that seemed utterly preposterous. ‘Mandatory daily walks (weather permitting, with owner participation encouraged)’. ‘A non-negotiable cuddle quota (minimum 15 minutes per day, active engagement required)’. ‘Regular socialization with other canine companions (approved by veterinarian)’. She looked up, her expression a mask of cool disbelief.
“Dr. Seo,” she began, her voice edged with frost, “I offered you a salary that could fund a small nation. My contract details a comprehensive, luxurious care plan. This… this is a list of demands for me.”
“Indeed,” Ji-han replied, completely unperturbed, Mochi now nuzzling his chin. “Because Mochi isn’t just a pet, Ms. Shim. He’s family. And family needs more than just luxury. He needs companionship, engagement, and yes, cuddles.” He gestured to the document. “These are my terms of endearment, non-negotiable.”
Yoona felt a surge of indignation. No one presented *her* with non-negotiable terms. She was Shim Yoona. Yet, Mochi, nestled happily in Ji-han’s arm, was proof of his inexplicable charm. She would have to compromise. She hated compromise. “We can discuss the… practicality of these items during the tour,” she conceded, a bitter taste in her mouth. “Follow me.”
She led him through the minimalist expanse of her penthouse, each room defined by stark elegance and astronomical wealth. The gourmet kitchen, untouched by human cooking; the soundproofed media room, rarely used; the vast, impersonal master suite. Mochi, now trotting happily at Ji-han’s heels, seemed to find more interest in the vet’s worn sneakers than the priceless artifacts.
As they entered the walk-in closet, a veritable showroom of designer clothing and accessories, Yoona gestured to a series of climate-controlled display cases. “Mochi’s wardrobe is extensive. He has specialized outfits for every occasion and climate. His collars are custom, fitted with GPS trackers and biometric sensors.”
Ji-han merely hummed, his attention caught by a small, glittering object near the base of one display. Mochi, emboldened by his new friend’s presence, had darted ahead. Too quickly. A sharp, distressed yelp erupted from the small dog. Mochi began to gag, pawing frantically at his mouth.
“Mochi!” Yoona cried, her carefully constructed composure shattering. Panic, cold and sharp, pierced through her. She dropped to her knees, reaching for the struggling dog, her hands clumsy, shaking.
Ji-han was faster. In a single, fluid motion, he was beside Mochi. He didn't snatch the dog; his movements were gentle yet firm. One hand supported Mochi’s small body, the other deftly opened the poodle’s mouth. Yoona watched, mesmerized, as he tilted Mochi slightly forward, his thumbs pressing carefully below the jawline.
A tiny, blindingly brilliant object shot out of Mochi’s mouth, skittering across the polished floor. It was one of her diamond earrings, a half-carat stud from a set worth more than most people’s annual salary. Mochi coughed once, then looked up at Ji-han with wide, grateful eyes, before licking the vet’s hand. Ji-han cradled the dog, checking his breathing, his touch reassuring, expert.
Yoona knelt there, frozen. Her pulse thumped violently in her throat against the sudden, profound silence. She had been useless. Paralyzed by fear. Ji-han had simply… acted. His competence was a quiet, undeniable force. He looked up, his gaze meeting hers, a calm concern in his warm eyes. For a long moment, they simply stared at each other, the air thick with quiet understanding, a shared vulnerability.

The blue notification, flashing brightly, jarred Yoona back to reality. Her gaze dropped to the earring, then to Ji-han, then back to the floating display. Recovered… VP? This was new. And utterly illogical. She pushed herself to her feet, her voice regaining its usual steel, though a tremor still lurked beneath the surface. “Thank you, Dr. Seo. That was… efficient.”
Before Ji-han could reply, her phone buzzed with an insistent vibration. The caller ID flashed: Director Park Jin-woo. Yoona’s rival, a man whose ambition was only matched by his duplicity. She eyed the screen, then Ji-han. “Excuse me. NEXUS business.” She moved to a discreet corner, answering with a clipped, “Park.”
“Yoona-ssi,” Park’s voice oozed false pleasantry through the speaker. “Heard about your little ‘Project Nova’ launch. Bold. Very bold. Some are saying it’s a Hail Mary, given the recent market shifts. Wouldn’t want a glitch to derail such a significant endeavor, would we?” The veiled threat hung in the air, a reminder of the corporate sharks circling, constantly testing her defenses.
Yoona’s jaw tightened. She knew exactly what he was implying. A sabotage. Park would stop at nothing to see her fail. She ended the call without a word, her attention snapping back to the real, tangible threat of her business empire, the delicate balance she had to maintain. Her gaze hardened, the brief moment of connection with Ji-han forgotten, replaced by a cold resolve.
She turned back, her expression now entirely unreadable. Ji-han was no longer holding Mochi. Mochi had curled up on a plush rug, already asleep. Ji-han, however, was studying something on the wall of the hallway leading to her private study. A framed photograph. It was an old picture, faded at the edges, depicting a younger Yoona, perhaps ten or twelve, with a wide, unconstrained smile, her arm linked with a kindly-looking elderly woman. The woman’s eyes twinkled with warmth, a stark contrast to the severe elegance of Yoona’s current home. Yoona had almost forgotten it was there, a relic from a time she rarely allowed herself to revisit.
Ji-han gently touched the frame, his voice soft, almost a whisper. “Who was she?”
