Chapter 7 of 10
The Emperor's Gilded Cage

The Grand Atrium of the sovereign palace shimmered under sharp chandeliers. Gilded archways spiraled towards a domed ceiling painted with scenes of Volyan glory, each fresco eye-wateringly vivid. Mikolaj felt the gazes of hundreds, heavy as lead weights alongside his pinned strength. He stood on the polished volcanic flagstones, alone amidst a sea of brocaded silks and gleaming plate. Iskra was a shadow among the courtiers to his left, her posture rigid, her dark pupils fixed on him.
“Mikolaj Zarycz,” the autocrat's voice boomed, amplified by the hall’s acoustics. Rodion sat upon the Serpent Dais, draped in blood-red velvet, his gaze sharp as a falcon’s. “You stand accused of using forbidden arts, of destabilizing the very foundations of our hallowed Zorya institutions. Vlastan Krupin, scion of the noble Krupin house, has brought these grievous charges.”
Vlastan limped into the aisle, a sneer twisting his features. His arm, though healed, was still wrapped in a silken sling, a blatant performance for the court. “He is a menace, Your Radiance! A brute who wields power without control, a threat to every noble house, every loyal citizen! He defied me, humiliated me, shattered the academy with his… his cursed touch!”
A murmur swept through the assembled nobility. Mikolaj simply stared, his face a mask of practiced indifference. The sheer audacity of Vlastan’s claims, the theatrical injury, the manufactured outrage – it was all so transparent, yet utterly effective in this viper’s nest.
“Peace!” Rodion’s shout cut through the whispers. “The charge is clear. The punishment for such transgression, if proven, is severe. But the Volyan Empire prides itself on justice. Mikolaj Zarycz, you shall be tested. A simple demonstration to prove your innocence, or condemn you.”
The sovereign gestured. From the ranks of the royal vanguard, a colossal officer stepped out. Borin, a veteran whose Aura rippled like summer heat, advanced. His ancestral greatsword, ‘Scarlet Aegis,’ hung at his hip, its pommel glinting with embedded garnets.
“You will walk from your current position to the foot of the Serpent Dais,” Rodion commanded, his eyes boring into Mikolaj. “A mere thirty paces. And as you approach, Borin will deliver an unrestrained strike. You will withstand it. Do not defend, do not retaliate. Simply endure. If you are innocent of forbidden arts, your Aura will be pure, and you will stand. If you are a wielder of uncontrolled destructive forces, this palace, and all within it, shall bear witness.”
Iskra’s breath caught, a faint gasp only Mikolaj, with his now heightened senses, could discern. A mere thirty paces. Each one, an act of seismic destruction in the making. A single misstep, a flicker of lost focus, and the gilded hall would become dust, the nobility pulverized, the monarch himself a casualty. This wasn't a test; it was an execution, cleverly designed to use his own power against him, or to expose him as a fraud who had merely gotten lucky against Vlastan.
Mikolaj closed his eyes for a fraction of a second. The words from Bronislaw’s manual, the arcane diagrams of Aura suppression, replayed in his mind. He had practiced in the solitude of his room, walking slow, deliberate circles, pushing the exponential growth of his steps not outward, but *inward*. He had to become a black hole of power, a singularity that swallowed its own destructive potential.
[AURA STABILIZATION MODULE ACTIVATED. INPUT: INFINITE. OUTPUT: CONTAINED. STABILITY: CRITICAL.]
He opened his eyes. The world seemed to sharpen, the woven banners, the glint of the golden regalia, all hyper-defined. His own energy, a roaring ocean, was now compressed into a diamond-hard point within him. He took his first step. The dark flagstones did not crack. The ornate pillars did not shudder. No tremors ran through the hall.
A collective intake of air hissed from the court. Mikolaj took another step. Then another. His gait was slow, impossibly measured, as if each footfall was a prayer against annihilation. Every ounce of his being was focused on this internal war, the constant, crushing effort to keep the [Path of Perpetual Motion] from tearing itself, and the world, apart. His feet, encased in Bronislaw’s boots, seemed to cling to the floor, absorbing the vibrations of his monstrous power.
He walked, a man of quiet, terrifying focus, across the vast, echoing space. Thirty paces. Each one a battle won, a disaster averted. The court watched without a sound, their initial murmurs replaced by a profound stillness. Vlastan’s sneer had faded, replaced by a confused frown. Iskra, however, watched with a flicker of understanding, an unvoiced acknowledgment of the impossible feat he was performing.
As Mikolaj reached the final marker, standing directly before the Serpent Dais, the officer unleashed a roar that shook the very air. His greatsword, Scarlet Aegis, arced downward, wreathed in crackling violet light. It was a strike designed to cleave mountains, to shatter siege walls, to obliterate anything in its path.
The blade descended, a whistling blur of steel and raw power, aimed squarely at Mikolaj’s chest. The air screamed around it. Mikolaj did not flinch. He did not move a muscle. He simply stood there, a beacon of tethered force.
*CLANG!* The sound was sharp, metallic, and ear-splitting. Scarlet Aegis struck Mikolaj’s chest with the force of a battering ram. But instead of tearing through him, instead of even moving him, the blade *shattered*. Shards of enchanted steel exploded outwards, raining down on the stone tiles like hail. The officer staggered back, mouth agape, the hilt of his broken sword clattering from his grasp.
Mikolaj stood unmoving, not a ripple in his composure, not even a crease in his simple, borrowed tunic. The coiled Aura, drawn inward, had formed an impenetrable shell, a barrier of unyielding potential. The court gasped, a collective, stunned exclamation. The sovereign leaned toward the edge of his seat, his expression unreadable.
Then, from beside the high seat, an elder counselor stepped into the light. The monarch’s chief advisor, known for his chillingly impassive demeanor, spoke. His voice was soft, almost a murmur, yet it carried through the hushed hall with unnerving clarity.
“An impressive display, young Zarycz,” the advisor said, his lips curling into a slow, knowing smile. A smile that did not reach his cold, observant eyes. “Truly, a remarkable control of… one’s inherent abilities.” He paused, letting his gaze linger on Mikolaj, a spark of something ancient and terrible in their depths. “The Silent Wardens have been watching you, Mikolaj Zarycz. We always do.”
The quiet that followed hung heavier than before, thick with implications. Mikolaj felt cold dread settle in his gut. Bronislaw’s warning echoed in his mind: *“Beware the one who does not watch.”* The counselor had watched, and he knew. Every step, every contained tremor, every suppressed eruption of power—he had seen it all. The cage was gilded, but it was still a cage, and now, the true captors had revealed themselves.
