The Saint's True Nature

Signe found Old Helmi in the rarely used kitchens, tending a kettle that hummed quietly over a low fire. The scent of dried herbs and simmering broth filled the chilly space, a stark contrast to the dust and decay elsewhere in the Hold. Helmi, hunched over a mortar and pestle, crushed fragrant leaves with practiced, deliberate movements.
“Helmi,” Signe said, her voice tight, the drawing clutched in her hand. The old woman did not startle, merely paused her grinding, her gaze fixed on the granite bowl.
“My lady.” Her voice was flat, devoid of surprise.
“Rila,” Signe began, stepping closer, parchment crinkling in her grip. “My kin… she drew this. She said she dreamt it.” Signe unfolded the sketch, pushing it onto the worn wooden counter between them. The raven, the thorny crag, the archaic lines of the forgotten pact. Helmi’s gaze finally lifted from the herbs, her eyes—dark, knowing pools—met Signe’s.
“The Varis bloodline holds old knowledge, my lady. Older than your family remembers.” Helmi picked up the pestle, resuming her rhythmic work. *Thump, grind, thump, grind.* Each sound was a beat against Signe’s rising panic.
“Old knowledge? She’s frail from birth. She’s never seen this place, never heard these stories. How could she dream a symbol from a hidden ledger, a pact tied to Valerik’s curse?” Signe’s voice rose, a desperate edge sharpening her tone. “And the Vinter Heart… when she coughed, it glowed.”
Helmi stopped, her hand hovering over the mortar. “The Heart responds to true blood, to echoes of the pact. Rila’s blood runs with a lineage entwined, though distantly, with the Winters’ primordial covenant. A faint echo, but an echo still.” She looked Signe directly in the eye now, her expression grave. “But that is not the secret you truly seek, is it, my lady? You speak of dreams and pacts, but your thoughts are on the journal, on the words ‘a bride of pure heart, given freely.’”
Signe swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. The air in the kitchen, once comforting, now felt heavy, suffocating. “The ritual… it will cure him, won’t it? It will break the curse.”
Helmi slowly set the pestle down. The silence that followed was vast, broken only by the distant, mournful whistle of the wind through the Hold’s high battlements. “The volume speaks of sanctifying the cursed lord. It speaks of an Ashen Saint.”
“Yes, the Ashen Saint. The purified form. What does that mean, exactly? A transformation? A… a new beginning?” Signe leaned forward, a fragile hope clinging to her voice. She remembered the warmth of Valerik’s gaze, the quiet strength in his presence despite his suffering. She envisioned a future where his touch brought life, not death.
Helmi reached for a small, unadorned clay jug on a shelf, pouring herself a measure of dark liquid. She took a slow sip before speaking. “The Ashen Saint is indeed a new beginning. For the world, perhaps. Not for Lord Valerik, as you know him.”
“What are you saying?” Signe demanded, a cold dread snaking through her.
“The Winter line was cursed to contain the rot, not to destroy it. To funnel its destructive force, to bind it to a single vessel. The pact was made for this purpose: to prevent the contagion from consuming all of Kirsikka. The Winter Lords became the stewards of death, living prisons for a primeval entity.” Helmi’s voice was a low murmur, like the rumble of distant ice.
“But the ritual… it’s to *cure* him.”
“It is to complete the transformation. To strip away the man and leave only the vessel. The Ashen Saint is immortal. Unthinking. An entity of death itself, without remorse, without memory, without choice. A pure, perfect conduit for the curse’s power.” Helmi’s eyes held an elder sorrow. “It does not cure him, my lady. It erases him.”
Signe retreated a step, pressing a palm to her dry lips. “No… no, that’s not what the parchment said. It said ‘an act of selfless love’ would sanctify him.”
“And it will. Your selfless act of love, your pure heart, given freely… it is the final catalyst.” Helmi’s voice lowered to a whisper. “The first act of the Ashen Saint is always the absorption of his catalyst. His bride. You. Your life force will fuel his awakening, bind him fully to the blight. You will be consumed, your spirit woven into the core of the Ashen Saint, a silent echo within the unthinking vessel.”
Consumed. Erased. Valerik, the man who recoiled from touching her skin, who bore his affliction with melancholic grace, would be emptied, replaced by an unthinking vessel of salt and decay, and she would be its opening kill.
She wanted to break the curse, to keep him breathing beside her. Not to feed him her marrow to forge an abomination.
“There must be another way,” Signe whispered, the words raw, tearing at her throat. “There *has* to be.”
Helmi offered no comfort, only a mournful shake of her head. “The pact is old, my lady. The path is set.”
The ledger. The Vinter Heart. Rila’s vision. A loophole had to exist, an obscure clause buried beneath dust. She would scour every crumbling folio in this hold before she permitted his hollow resurrection.
Leaving Helmi, Signe climbed the winding spiral to her chambers, boot leather scuffing frostbitten granite. She needed air, space to think, to breathe. She moved to the tall, arched window that overlooked the main courtyard, pushing aside the heavy drapes. A fresh blanket of snow had fallen, muffling the world in a pristine, chilling silence.
Below, a solitary figure stood, his dark cloak stark against the white ground. He looked up, as if sensing her presence, and his handsome, familiar face broke into a predatory smile. Kaelan. Her stomach twisted with disgust and a sudden, terrible premonition.
From the low servants’ gate, Rila emerged, wrapped in wool, breath misting in the draft. She drifted toward Kaelan, steps slow over the flagstones, and the Purifier extended a leather-gloved palm to meet her. The zealot was speaking with her kin—the girl whose blood chimed with old memory, who had drawn the very sigil of the primordial pact.
Signe pressed her palms flat against the stone sill. What did the Purifier want with Rila?
