Chapter 1: Absorbing the Impact

Heavy wooden doors slid open with a sharp, metallic click. Step by step, you followed the slouching, yellow-sleeping-bag-toting figure of Shota Aizawa into the bright classroom of Class 1-A. Cool morning air drifted through the open windows, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms and freshly polished linoleum. Your fingers tightened around the strap of your school bag, knuckles turning a pale, bloodless white. Golden hair fell across your shoulders, framing a face dominated by wide, emerald-green eyes that tried desperately to look anywhere but at the crowd of teenagers staring back at you. Silence descended upon the room like a heavy blanket, crushing the lively chatter that had filled the air just seconds prior. "Quiet down," Aizawa muttered, his voice a gravelly scrape that instantly commanded attention. He didn't even bother taking his hands out of his pockets as he shuffled to the front podium. Slumping against the chalkboard, the tired teacher gestured toward you with a lazy flick of his wrist. "We have a transfer student joining us today. Her circumstances are... unique. Try not to break her on her first day." Instantly, a hand shot into the air, moving so fast it practically cut the wind. "Sir!" Tenya Iida stood perfectly straight, his glasses catching the morning light with a bright, robotic gleam. "As class representative, I must ask! Is it highly unusual to admit a transfer student midway through the semester? What measures have been taken to ensure she is caught up with our curriculum?" "Sit down, Iida," Aizawa sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose as if a massive headache had just bloomed behind his eyes. "She passed the practical exams. That is all you need to know." Laughter and whispers broke out among the desks, shattering the tense atmosphere. "Oh my gosh, she is absolutely gorgeous!" Mina Ashido squealed, leaning so far over her desk her pink forehead almost touched the wood. She waved her hands frantically, her dark eyes sparkling with unbridled excitement. "Look at her hair! It looks like spun gold! Welcome to Class 1-A!" Beside her, Tsuyu Asui tilted her head, tapping a finger against her chin. "Welcome, kero. I hope you like it here." "Wow, a real beauty," Denki Kaminari muttered, a slow grin spreading across his face as he leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his blonde, lightning-streaked hair. He gave you a quick wink. "If you need a tour of the campus, I'm highly qualified." "Dream on, idiot," Kyoka Jiro scoffed, twirling one of her earphone jacks around her finger with a lazy smirk. "She'd probably get lost just listening to your directions." Your cheeks burned with a sudden, fierce heat, the crimson blush creeping up to the tips of your ears. "Tch." A harsh, grating sound cut through the friendly chatter. Katsuki Bakugo sat with his boots propped up on his desk, his crimson eyes narrowed into sharp, dangerous slits. He glared at you, his jaw clenching so hard a small muscle jumped in his cheek. Small, popping sparks crackled in the palms of his hands, smelling faintly of burnt sugar and sulfur. "Another extra," Bakugo spat, his voice dropping to a low, venomous growl. "We don't need weaklings dragging down our class. What kind of pathetic quirk do you even have, blondie?" "Bakugo, that is incredibly rude!" Momo Yaoyorozu stood up, her posture elegant and dignified as she glared at the explosive boy. She then turned to you, her expression softening into a warm, welcoming smile. "Please ignore him. I am Momo Yaoyorozu. It is truly a pleasure to have you join us." "Yeah, don't mind the angry hedgehog!" Eijiro Kirishima chimed in, flashing a sharp-toothed grin as he pumped a fist in the air. "I'm Kirishima! We're gonna be great training partners! A new classmate means more chances to get manly and strong!" Your gaze shifted across the room, landing on a boy with wild, green curls who was currently scribbling frantically in a charred notebook. Izuku Midoriya's eyes were massive, glowing with an intense, analytical curiosity. "A-blonde hair... green eyes... she doesn't seem to have any visible physical mutations, so her quirk must be emitter or transformation-type! I wonder if her quirk is related to energy manipulation or perhaps light? Or maybe it's something completely unexpected—" "Deku," Bakugo barked, making the green-haired boy flinch and squeak in terror. "Shut your damn mouth." Quietly watching from the middle row, Shoto Todoroki remained silent. His dual-colored eyes—one dark gray, one striking blue—tracked your every movement with a calm, calculating intensity. He didn't smile, nor did he scowl. He simply observed, assessing the subtle shift in your posture, the way you stood ready to pivot at a second's notice. "Introduce yourself," Aizawa commanded, his voice cutting through the noise like a blade. "Name. Quirk. Keep it brief." Taking a deep breath, you stepped forward, the soles of your shoes squeaking softly against the clean floor. "My name is Airi Senju," you said, your voice steadying as you forced the tremor out of your vocal cords. "My quirk is called Kinetic Redirection. I can absorb the kinetic energy from physical impacts and redirect it through my body, either as raw physical force or as localized shockwaves." A collective gasp rippled through the classroom. "Whoa, that sounds incredibly powerful!" Ochaco Uraraka beamed, clenching her fists in excitement. "You can take hits and throw them back? That's amazing!" "Fascinating," Midoriya muttered, his pencil moving so fast it threatened to tear the paper. "Kinetic absorption implies a limit to how much force can be stored. Is there a threshold? Does the absorbed energy cause physical strain if held too long? Can it be released through objects, or only through direct contact?" "You talk too much," you said softly, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through your nervous exterior. "But yes, there is a limit. If I absorb too much without releasing it, my muscles tear from the internal pressure." "Perfect," Aizawa mumbled, a dark, creepy smile stretching across his scarred face. "An emitter-type with high risk and high reward. Just what U.A. loves to cultivate." Standing up from his sleeping bag, the teacher pointed a finger toward the door. "Change into your gym uniforms. We're heading to Ground Beta. It's time to see if your quirk is as impressive as you claim." Groans and excited cheers erupted simultaneously as the class stood up. --- Hot sunlight beat down on the concrete landscape of Ground Beta, a mock city designed for urban combat training. Dressed in the blue, white, and red U.A. gym uniform, you stood in the center of the simulated street, stretching your arms. The fabric clung to your frame, comfortable but durable enough to withstand the intense friction of physical combat. Around you, the students of Class 1-A gathered in a loose semicircle, watching with intense curiosity. "Alright, listen up," Aizawa said, standing under the shadow of a fake skyscraper. "Usually, we do these evaluations at the start of the year. But since Senju is joining us late, she needs a benchmark. One of you will spar with her. First to immobilize their opponent or force them out of the designated ring wins." "Me!" Bakugo stepped forward before anyone else could even blink. Aggression rolled off him in waves, his shoulders hunched like a predator ready to pounce. He cracked his knuckles, tiny explosions popping like firecrackers in his palms, sending wisps of grey smoke curling into the air. "I'll put this transfer student in her place," Bakugo growled, a sadistic grin stretching across his face. "Let's see how much of my blast she can absorb before she blows to pieces." "Wait, Bakugo! That's too dangerous!" Kirishima protested, reaching out to grab his friend's shoulder, only for the blonde to jerk away violently. "Shut up, Shitty Hair!" Bakugo snapped. "If she's in the hero course, she needs to handle a real fight. Don't coddle her!" "He's right," you said, stepping into the painted white ring on the asphalt. Your green eyes locked onto Bakugo's fiery red ones, all trace of nervousness evaporating from your chest. In its place, a cold, focused determination took root, making your blood run hot with anticipation. "Don't hold back," you challenged, sinking into a low, defensive martial arts stance. "Because I won't." "Oho, you've got guts," Kaminari whistled from the sidelines. "But Bakugo is a monster. She's in for a rough time." "Be careful, Airi-chan!" Uraraka called out, her hands cupped around her mouth. Both fighters braced themselves, the silence between you stretching thin. Nodding, you focused your mind, drawing on the dormant energy pathways within your body. Your skin began to emit a faint, barely visible green hum, a subtle vibration that indicated your quirk was active and ready to absorb. "Begin!" Aizawa barked. Boom! A massive explosion propelled Bakugo forward, turning him into a human missile. He covered the distance between you in a fraction of a second, his right hand outstretched, roaring with lethal, orange flames. "Die!" Bakugo screamed, swinging his palm directly toward your chest. Instead of dodging, you braced yourself, planting your back foot firmly into the asphalt. Impact shattered the air. The blast hit you dead-on, a concussive wave of heat and pressure that should have sent you flying through a brick wall. Swirling smoke obscured the view, drawing gasps of worry from Midoriya and Uraraka. "Did he kill her?!" Mineta squealed, clutching his head in panic. "No," Todoroki said, his voice quiet but sharp. "Look closer." Slowly, the smoke cleared, revealing a sight that made Bakugo's eyes widen in genuine shock. You hadn't budged an inch. Your arms were crossed in front of your face, but instead of charred skin and broken bones, your limbs were glowing with a brilliant, pulsing emerald light. The entire force of his explosion had been pulled inward, swirling beneath your skin like liquid fire. "My turn," you whispered, a fierce grin breaking across your face. Unleashing the stored kinetic energy, you lunged forward, thrusting your palm toward Bakugo's midsection. A massive, green shockwave erupted from your fingertips, ripping through the air with a deafening boom. Bakugo's eyes went wide as the sheer force slammed into his chest, lifting him off his feet and throwing him backward through the air. He flipped twice, barely managing to land on his feet, his boots screeching against the concrete as he slid back ten yards, leaving deep black skid marks on the road. "Holy crap!" Kirishima yelled, his jaw dropping. "She blew Bakugo back!" Incredible control was evident in your stance, and Yaoyorozu gasped, her hands covering her mouth. "She absorbed the entire thermal and kinetic output and converted it instantly." "Tch... you b**ch," Bakugo growled, wiping a smudge of soot from his cheek. His chest was heaving, his face contorting into an expression of pure, unadulterated rage. "That actually hurt. Now I don't have to hold back at all!" Sparks flew from his shoulders, a massive aura of heat radiating from his body as he took a deep, aggressive stance. He reached for the pins on his grenade gauntlets, but realized he was only wearing his gym uniform. It didn't matter. The sheer volume of sweat on his palms was already enough to level a building. "Bring it," you challenged, your green eyes glowing brighter as the remaining kinetic energy vibrated in your muscles, making your veins pulse with light. "Die, die, DIE!" Bakugo roared, launching himself back into the air, using consecutive, rapid-fire explosions to bounce off the walls of the fake buildings, attacking you from multiple angles at dizzying speed. Flashes of orange light lit up the simulated street as blast after blast rained down on you. You moved like a blur, absorbing side-swipes, blocking overhead strikes, and using the momentum to spin-kick him away. Each hit you took only made you stronger, but the heat of his explosions was starting to take a toll. Sweat poured down your face, stinging your eyes as the temperature in the ring soared to scorching levels. "Your limit!" Bakugo yelled, appearing directly above you. "You're holding too much! I can see your arms shaking!" He was right. Pain flared through your shoulders, a sharp, tearing sensation that warned you your muscles were reaching their absolute capacity. If you didn't release this energy soon, your own quirk would tear you apart from the inside out. "Here's my biggest blast!" Bakugo screamed, cupping his hands together to form a concentrated funnel of air and fire. "Stun Grenade!" A blinding flash of white light consumed the entire street, accompanied by a sound so loud it vibrated the fillings in your teeth. Fearing the worst, Midoriya took a step forward, his hand reaching out. "Airi!" Instead of collapsing, you channeled every ounce of willpower into your legs, absorbing the massive concussive wave. Your eyes flared with a blinding, emerald radiance. "Release!" you screamed, slamming your palms flat against the asphalt beneath your feet. A tectonic shockwave shattered the ground, ripping the concrete into massive chunks that flew upward like a volcanic eruption. The shockwave radiated outward in a perfect circle, obliterating the painted ring and sending a violent tremor through the entire mock city. Bakugo was forced upward by the rising debris, his balance completely shattered as he struggled to find leverage in the air. Using the dust cloud as cover, you leaped off a floating piece of concrete, aiming a decisive, energy-infused strike at his chest to push him out of bounds. Suddenly, a thick, white capture scarf wrapped tightly around your waist, instantly cutting off your momentum and pulling you back down to earth. Another strand of the scarf wrapped around Bakugo's ankle, yanking him out of the air and slamming him flat on his back. "That's enough," Aizawa's cold voice echoed through the settling dust. Standing at the edge of the destroyed street, the teacher's hair was floating wildly in the air, his eyes glowing red as his Erasure quirk canceled both of your powers instantly. The glowing green light vanished from your skin, leaving your muscles aching and trembling with exhaustion. "Damn it!" Bakugo yelled, ripping the scarf off his leg as he scrambled to his feet. "I had her! Why did you stop the fight, sensei?!" "Because you both would have destroyed the training grounds, and Senju's muscles are already torn," Aizawa said, his hair dropping back down as he deactivated his quirk. "The match is a draw. Both of you go to Recovery Girl." Heavy silence fell over the class as they looked at the massive crater you had created in the center of the street. "A draw..." Midoriya whispered, his eyes wide as he stared at the destruction. "Against Kaachan... on her first day..." Todoroki walked slowly toward the edge of the crater, his gaze fixed on you. His expression had shifted from curiosity to something much deeper, a quiet respect mixed with a burning spark of rivalry. "Are you alright?" Todoroki asked, extending a hand to help you up from the rubble. Looking up, you saw his dual-colored eyes scanning your face, his hand steady and warm against the cool air. Before you could reach out to take his hand, a sharp, agonizing pain shot through your chest, making you gasp and clutch your heart. Your vision blurred, the emerald light in your eyes flickering violently as a strange, black energy began to seep from your fingertips, completely different from your normal quirk. Todoroki's eyes widened in shock as he took a step back, staring at the dark, crackling energy. "What... what is that?" Midoriya gasped, pointing a trembling finger at your hands. Aizawa stepped forward, his expression turning dead serious as he reached for his scarf again. "Senju, what is the meaning of this? That's not Kinetic Redirection." Your breath hitched, the agonizing black energy spreading up your arms, whispering a dark, terrifying secret from your past that you had desperately tried to hide from U.A. "I... I can't control it," you choked out, collapsing to your knees as the dark energy flared, threatening to consume the entire courtyard.
