Chapter 9 of 10
Unbroken Fist, Demon's Gambit
957 words
The roaring inferno of the Azure Cloud Realm vanished, replaced by the blue-tinged glow of Gyeongbokgung's courtyard. Kenji gasped, his lungs burning with an air that tasted of dust and ozone, not the acrid smoke of a dying world. Akari’s chilling words, “Let’s try something more interesting,” still echoed in his mind, sharp as a blade. He blinked. Yumi hung motionless inside a shimmering barrier, her breathing shallow. Elder Park stood before her, fingers spread wide as he drained the ley lines dry.
Before Kenji could even move, the throne hall groaned. A guttural rumble vibrated through the very stones beneath their feet. Elder Park's pupils flared emerald. Veins, thick and black as river roots, bulged across his temples. His skin began to crack, shedding flakes of aged flesh like crumbling plaster. Beneath, something hard and grey, like granite, emerged.
“Foolish children,” Elder Park rasped, his voice now a chorus of grinding stone and wind. His limbs thickened, his torso expanding, pushing his robes into shreds that fluttered to the floor. The very floorboards around him fractured, sending shards of ornate wood scattering. The ambient current beneath the courtyard surged into a deafening roar, funneling into the elder's altered frame. He was fusing with the earth vein itself.
What stood before them was a jagged colossus of dark grey granite, viridian sparks snapping between craggy joints. Its eyes were twin pits of emerald fire, burning with an unholy light.
“Yumi!” Kenji roared, the name tearing from his throat, pure instinct overriding his strategist's mind. The relics strapped to his forearms flared with faint crimson light as he charged. He didn’t care about tactics or the impossible odds. He just saw the beast, the threat, and the sister he would not lose again.
He met the brute head-on. A fist of solid bedrock swung in a vicious arc; Kenji slipped beneath it, air whistling past his ear. He drove a fist into the creature's knee, brass knuckles hitting mineral with bone-shaking force. The weave flared, sending shock ripples through the mineral shell. Chips of rock exploded outwards.
The elder staggered with a grinding roar, then stomped downward, driving a localized seismic burst across the flagstones. Kenji leaped, clearing the wave, and continued his assault. He hammered weak seams and structural pivots, punching fissures through the carapace to shatter the subterranean currents animating it. Each hit was precise, fueled by a fraction of his returning strength and the sheer desperation to reach Yumi. He saw Akari, not fighting, but standing with an almost serene detachment, his hands weaving complex, graceful patterns in the air.
Kenji landed a devastating uppercut that sent a shower of stone fragments flying from the Elder’s jaw. The creature reeled, momentarily stunned. The path to Yumi lay clear. Kenji threw a glance toward his rival, waiting for the killing strike.
But Akari wasn’t attacking. He wasn’t even looking at the Elder. His gaze was fixed on the barrier around Yumi, hands turning to draw the displaced shockwaves of the skirmish toward his own chest. Instead of targeting the beast, Akari drew the subterranean flow meant for the grand array into his own meridian network.
Obsidian vapor coiled around Akari's shoulders, hardening into black glass. The air around him crackled, no longer with the frenetic chaos of the battle, but with a focused, predatory hunger. The subterranean channels Akari twisted—unseen by normal men—showed clearly to Kenji's senses: thick veins pulling from the foundations, the metropolis, and Yumi's fading cage straight into the council president. The Shadow Demon Emperor wasn't saving Yumi; he was harvesting the harvest. He was using the chaos Kenji created to become a god.
“Akari, what are you doing?” Kenji snarled, stepping back from the crumbling golem.
Akari gave a faint, razor-thin smile. “As I said, Kenji. Something more interesting.” His voice was a silken whisper, yet it cut through the din of battle. “This messy squabble was merely a convenient diversion. A… purification ritual for Seoul’s stagnant energies. And a rather potent catalyst for my own ascension.”
Kenji's ribs tightened. He had been used to crack the vault open. The truce, the compass, the shared goal – all a charade.
Just then, the outer walls of the throne hall shuddered violently. A resounding *boom* echoed from outside, followed by the distant clamor of alarms. Wards that had hummed with oppressive frequency suddenly flickered, their runic borders fracturing.
“Kenji!” a familiar voice shouted, breathless. Min-jun, his face smudged with dirt, burst through a side entrance, followed by a handful of figures in dark, utilitarian suits, emblazoned with the stylized hawk sigil of the Namsan Eagles. They carried grounded antenna rods humming with counter-frequencies. “Breach secured! The perimeter grid collapsed!” Min-jun yelled, aiming a rod at clan retainers who tried to stabilize the grounds. The geomancers stumbled as their ley connections snapped.
The diversion shattered the stalemate, laying bare Kenji's choice. Yumi hung limp within the cage; the towering elder stood between them, knitting stone over crushed joints. Off to the side, Akari's frame thrummed with stolen essence, radiating abyssal violet.
Two paths diverged: crush Akari before his old demonic core reconstituted, or tear down the cage before the backlash pulverized Yumi.
Kenji shifted his stance, tuning out the gargoyle and the hovering demon lord until only Yumi remained. His sister. The one person, in this strange, new life, who had made him feel something akin to family. Millennia of solitude and the dream of an easy retirement slipped away.
He turned his back on Akari, ignoring the growing hum of power from the former Shadow Demon Emperor. He drove both armored fists directly into the bedrock, detonating the stone floor in a thunderous fracture.
“This world, this family… they are MINE to protect!”
