Chapter 3 of 10
An Unscheduled Sparring Match

Hakan watched her shoulders heave, her breath ragged. She knelt there, a solitary figure in the fading light, her whispered words a chilling echo in the silent dojo. “This time,” she’d vowed, “this time, I have to be strong enough to stop him.” The words wrapped around Hakan’s gut like a fist, tightening with each passing moment. He retreated from the shadowed archway, the soft crunch of his boots on the pebbled path the only sound. He didn’t know what 'it' was, or who 'him' referred to, but the raw terror in her voice was undeniable. A cold dread seeped into the excitement of his newfound power. How could Aylin, the unshakeable prodigy, be so afraid? And why did he feel, with a sickening certainty, that he was somehow at the heart of it?
He spent the rest of the night pacing his dojo floorboards, replaying her words, Temir’s warning, and the dizzying tally of his System tallies. The heavy Ruh band on his wrist remained a cold reminder of the secret he carried. Morning arrived, grey and cool, carrying with it the mandatory combat assessment. The Grand Arena of the Ascendant Peak, a cavernous space carved directly into the mountain’s heart, hummed with the restless murmurs of hundreds of novices. Tiered stone benches rose sharply, packed with onlookers. Below, on the polished dark-stone floor, pairs of combatants exchanged swift blows, their Ruh shimmering around their limbs.
Hakan, assigned to a mid-tier bracket, shuffled towards the designated waiting area, a forced, easygoing smile plastered on his face. He knew his official rank was low, barely above the academy’s general intake, and he preferred it that way for now. The last thing he needed was to draw attention to himself, not with a power that threatened to shatter reality with a single punch. He kept his gaze fixed on the flagstones, trusting the iron band to mask his absurd cultivation beneath a veneer of mediocrity.
“Next bout,” Master Rizan’s voice boomed, amplified by Ruh-infused acoustics, “Dagan Elmas against… Hakan Yilmaz.”
Hakan straightened, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his features. Dagan was a brute, all muscle and minimal finesse, a perfect opponent for a controlled, low-key win. He was about to step onto the arena floor when a ripple went through the crowd. A figure detached itself from the elite ranks. Aylin Koray, her dark hair pulled back in a severe braid, her uniform crisp, strode toward the ring proctor. A hush fell over the crowd, replaced by a confused murmur.
Master Rizan raised a brow. “Aylin, your assessment is not for another cycle. Is there an issue?”
Aylin’s voice, usually melodic, was crisp and devoid of warmth. “Master Rizan, I request an unscheduled duel.” Her gaze cut through the murmuring crowd and landed squarely on Hakan. “I call out Hakan Yilmaz.”
The arena went silent. Heat crept up Hakan’s neck. A high-ranking prodigy calling out a bottom-tier pupil was an unheard-of humiliation—a deliberate attempt to force him into submission. His easy smile faltered. Refusing an open summons from an upper-tier peer meant forfeiting all academy standing.
Hakan met her gaze, his internal hurt warring with a sudden, defiant spark. He forced his trademark cheeky grin back onto his face, though it felt brittle. “Well, well, Aylin. To what do I owe the honor? Did my humble presence somehow offend your lofty sensibilities?”
Aylin’s expression remained unreadable, a cool mask. “You stand in the way of progress, Hakan. It’s time you were put back in your place.” She gestured with a dismissive flick of her wrist. “Unless, of course, the class clown is too scared to face a real opponent?”
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Her words were crafted to sting. Hakan’s hand bunched, the metal cuff biting into his skin. His easygoing facade threatened to crack. But he couldn’t refuse. Not her. Not now. He wouldn’t give her the satisfaction of seeing him back down.
“Scared?” Hakan chuckled, a hollow sound. He strode onto the dark flagstones, posture casual, his gaze locked onto hers. “Never. Lead the way, Your Grace.”
Master Rizan, after a moment of stunned silence, cleared his throat. “Very well. Aylin Koray, Hakan Yilmaz. First to yield, or be rendered unable to continue. Begin!”
Aylin didn’t wait for Hakan to settle. The moment Master Rizan’s hand dropped, she lunged, a blur of motion. Her Ruh, a shimmering azure, coalesced around her fists in the ‘Gale Breaker Form’ – a notoriously swift and powerful technique. Hakan barely raised his forearms in a defensive block before her initial blow slammed into him. The impact jarred his bones. He stumbled back, the cuff humming against his pulse.
He recovered quickly, channeling a basic ‘First Wind Form’ counter-punch, aiming for her shoulder. But Aylin wasn’t there. She had already pivoted, her foot sweeping towards his standing leg before he’d even completed his own thought. Hakan jumped back, narrowly avoiding the trip, a jolt of alarm going through him. How did she know? He tried a feint, dropping his guard to draw her in, then shifting his weight for a powerful upward thrust. Yet, before the thought fully formed, before his muscles fully engaged, Aylin was already moving, her hand a blur, deflecting his nascent attack with startling precision.
This wasn’t just skill; this was prescience. She knew his moves before he made them, countering his every intention as if reading a book. A cold certainty settled in Hakan’s chest. *She knows*. His old habits, his tells, the subtle shifts in his weight that betrayed his next action – she exploited every single one. Aylin pressed her advantage, each lunging hit aimed with chilling accuracy at his joints and Ruh-flow points. She wasn’t trying to win on points; she was trying to disable him, to shut him down. His initial anger cooled, replaced by a chilling realization: her desperation in the dojo, her vow to ‘stop him’ – she was trying to stop *him*, Hakan. And she was using every piece of knowledge she possessed to do it.
Aylin’s eyes, usually a soft hazel, were now hard and focused, reflecting a desperate, almost feral intent. She executed a perfect 'Sky Serpent Coil,' her body twisting, a silver training blade appearing in her hand as if conjured from the air. The Ruh-infused steel hummed, reflecting the arena lights. She moved with lethal grace, the blade arcing toward Hakan’s collarbone in an arc intended to sever his spirit channels. This was it. She was going for a crippling blow.
Temir’s words echoed in his mind: *“She’s afraid of your power. Don’t let her see it.”*
Panic flared, but then, a grim resolve. Hakan couldn’t let her win this. He couldn’t let her hurt him, not like this. Not when he knew she was so terrified. He channeled Ruh into his left forearm, pushing the limits of the cuff. A surge of raw essence, far beyond what the metal could conceal, coursed through him. The system pulsed in his vision.

The blade, sharp and whistling with Ruh, slammed into Hakan’s forearm. The crowd gasped, expecting the sickening crunch of bone, the spray of blood. Instead, a dull clang echoed through the arena. Hakan stood firm, the blade caught between his Ruh-reinforced arm and the subtle, almost invisible ripple of his unleashed power. Aylin’s mouth parted, sheer disbelief flashing across her face. With a slight twist of his wrist, Hakan flicked his forearm. The Ruh-infused training blade, tempered to endure crushing tons of force, shrieked and shattered into a dozen fragments across the black stone.
The arena was stunned into absolute silence. Hakan stood over his disarmed rival, his breath even, his cheekbones flushed. Aylin stared at the broken steel fragments, then up at him, raw terror chilling her features. He reached out, not to strike, but to gently cup her chin, forcing her to look into his eyes, his voice a low, rough murmur that carried only to her.
“Aylin… what are you so afraid of?”
