Chapter 6 of 10

An Unspoken Affection

Elder Ruan’s face, a roadmap of fear, crumpled further under Zhuo Qianfeng’s gaze. The air around them still crackled with the aftermath of the transformation, smelling faintly of clean rain and scorched metal. Spectators, slowly lowering their arms, squinted at the stage, their faces a mixture of confusion and awe. No one dared to speak. The grand competition arena, moments ago a cacophony of ambition and judgment, was now held in a stunned, disbelieving quiet. Then, a sharp cry sliced through the hush. "Elder Ruan! What have you done?" Instructor Lin Suyin burst from the crowd, her usually composed demeanor utterly shattered. Her eyes, wide with horror, darted from the shriveled gray dust on the flagstones to Elder Ruan’s pale, sweat-slicked face, then finally locked onto Zhuo Qianfeng. She rushed forward, pushing past students and minor elders, her hands trembling as she reached for him. "Zhuo Qianfeng! Are you... are you gravely injured? That lotus... it was a poison! A slow, agonizing poison!" Zhuo Qianfeng merely regarded her, a faint dust of ash clinging to his tunic. His newly forged meridians hummed with a vibrant, unfamiliar clarity. He felt no trace of injury, only a profound sense of efficiency. “Toxin?” he said, his voice level, almost conversational, cutting through the general alarm. “Indeed. A rather potent one. And quite useful, as it turns out.” He gestured vaguely at the residual ash. “It stripped away the calcification in my pathways with impressive speed. Far more efficient than the standard methods I would have had to employ.” Lin Suyin froze, her outstretched hand hovering inches from his shoulder. Her concern, her genuine, heart-wrenching fear for his well-being, evaporated into a cloud of bewilderment. “Useful?” she repeated, the word a fragile whisper. “But… it was meant to incapacitate you, to...” Her voice trailed off as the full implication of his casual dismissal settled upon her. He wasn't angry, not even mildly inconvenienced. He viewed a deadly toxin, a potential end to his existence, as a mere tool, an accelerant for his cultivation. Her carefully constructed guilt, her anticipatory dread of his fury, crumbled into dust. “Precisely,” Zhuo Qianfeng affirmed, picking up a stray petal fragment and crushing it between his thumb and forefinger. “Its unique corrosive properties provided a superior method of internal refinement. A lucky coincidence, considering the limited resources available to me.” He looked at her then, his gaze coolly analytical. “Your contribution, however unwitting, was appreciated. It accelerated my progress by several decades.” Lin Suyin stared, her breath catching in her throat. The man before her, who should have been raging or at least suffering, was instead articulating a calm, pragmatic analysis of how a lethal draft had benefited him. His absolute detachment from the life-threatening nature of the situation was disarming, terrifying, and utterly captivating. It wasn’t arrogance; it was a fundamental difference in perspective, a mind that saw only outcomes and efficiency. A strange, undeniable current of admiration surged through her. “You…” she began, her voice thick with unspent feeling. “You truly are… an anomaly. Your spirit… it's indomitable. To face such peril and merely see opportunity… I… I admire your resolve, Zhuo Qianfeng.” She took a hesitant step closer, her eyes shining with a complex mix of awe and a nascent, dangerous tenderness. “Anyone else would be broken. You simply… adapt. You are remarkable.” Zhuo Qianfeng tilted his head, processing her words. Resolve. Adaptation. Remarkable. These were qualities that aligned with his immediate objectives. “I assume this ‘admiration’ implies a willingness to assist me further in my endeavors?” he inquired, his expression unwavering. “Perhaps with access to more… unique alchemical ingredients? Such partnerships, though usually inefficient, can occasionally yield mutual benefit.” He considered it, already calculating the potential utility of her position and her obvious expertise. Lin Suyin’s face colored. Her earnest confession, her raw moment of vulnerability, had been immediately filtered through his lens of cold utility. His response was a stark reminder of his profound otherness, yet it did not extinguish the strange warmth in her chest. Before she could articulate the true nature of her sentiment, a booming voice erupted from the perimeter of the stage. “Hey, look at the charity case! Already got the Pill Hall instructor fawning over him!” A portly young master, clad in silks of emerald and gold, jeered from the edge of the student throng. His name was Jiao Zifan, a scion of the minor Jiao clan known for his boorishness and mediocre talent. He sneered, nudging a smaller, nervous student beside him. “First, he cheats his way into the finals, then he’s got the old hag practically throwing herself at him. What’s next, a full-body massage in the gardens?” The laughter that followed was thin, but it grated. Lin Suyin flinched, her earlier composure completely gone. Zhuo Qianfeng merely glanced at Jiao Zifan, cataloging his existence as a minor, irrelevant irritant. However, before he could dismiss the boy entirely, a flash of motion blurred past him. “You overgrown slug-beast!” Lei Ban roared, already halfway across the arena. His face was a mask of pure, unadulterated fury, veins bulging on his neck. He had watched the entire exchange, misinterpreting Lin Suyin’s obvious distress as a direct attack on Zhuo Qianfeng’s honor, and Jiao Zifan’s crude comment as an unforgivable insult to *his* chosen rival. “You dare disrespect my rival? You dare insult Instructor Lin in front of the Nimbus Jade Academy? I’ll peel your fat hide off and use it for a training dummy!” Jiao Zifan paled, his bravado instantly deflating. “Lei Ban? What’s your problem, you maniac? I wasn’t talking about you!” “You were talking about *him*!” Lei Ban roared, his fist already cocked back. A surge of crimson Qi enveloped his arm, making the air around it crackle. “And that makes it my problem!” The ensuing beatdown was less a fight and more a spectacular display of one-sided demolition. Lei Ban, fueled by a righteous (and completely misplaced) indignation, launched himself at Jiao Zifan with the force of a battering ram. Jiao Zifan, though larger, possessed none of Lei Ban’s martial prowess or raw strength. The first punch connected with a sickening crunch, sending the arrogant young master sprawling across the flagstones, scattering his gold-embroidered robes. Lei Ban followed up with a relentless barrage of strikes, each one accompanied by a guttural roar. Jiao Zifan shrieked, whimpering, and curled into a ball, attempting to shield himself from the onslaught. Dust billowed around them as Lei Ban delivered a final, concussive kick that sent Jiao Zifan sliding across the stone until he slammed into a pillar with a dull thud, falling unconscious. Lei Ban stood over the prone form, chest heaving, his face still flushed with rage. He then turned, planting his hands on his hips, and puffed out his chest, looking expectantly at Zhuo Qianfeng. “There! That’s what happens when they disrespect you! No one talks trash about the genius who’s going to defeat me one day!” Zhuo Qianfeng watched the entire spectacle unfold with a detached curiosity. The expenditure of Qi, the physical exertion, the chaotic temper… all for a perceived slight that held no actual consequence. It was a fascinating, if utterly baffling, display of human inefficiency. He considered the intricate web of emotional attachments that seemed to drive these individuals, an illogical system of protection and offense. It was almost endearing in its absurdity, proof that his followers, however loyal, would always remain delightfully inefficient.
