Chapter 8 of 10

Proxy Wars

985 words

The Grand Ballroom of the Navarro Estate was a shimmering chasm of crystal and hushed murmurs. Chandeliers, each a supernova of cut glass, spilled light onto a parquet floor so immaculately maintained it mirrored the constellations painted on the domed ceiling. Waiters in pearl-grey jackets wove through the throng, trays laden with sparkling flutes and miniature gourmet confections. Every conversation was a low thrum of old money and new power, a symphony of hushed alliances and simmering rivalries. Baltasar felt like an alien in his bespoke tuxedo, the fine wool a foreign skin. He could feel Churro stirring restlessly in the thermal bag hidden beneath his jacket, a reptilian lump of pure, unadulterated judgment. His gaze snagged on Don Hector, now seated by a discreet alcove. His grandfather’s eyes, though dimmed by illness, still held a sharp resolve as he surveyed the room, a silent sentinel in the opulent chaos. Baltasar braced himself against an ache of protective fury. This wasn't about him anymore; it was about saving the old man's legacy from Leandro's grasping fingers. “Cosima, my dear cousin,” a voice slithered through the air, cutting through the refined chatter. Leandro Navarro, impeccable in charcoal silk, materialized beside them, a predatory smile stretching his lips. His eyes, however, were fixed solely on Cosima, a calculating glint in their depths. “Such a vision, as always. But I do hope you’ve prepared for a rather… *urgent* matter.” Cosima stiffened beside Baltasar, her hand subtly brushing his arm. “Leandro,” she replied, her voice smooth as polished marble, but with an underlying edge. “Always the bearer of delightful news, aren’t you?” Leandro chuckled, a sound devoid of warmth. “Indeed. Especially when it involves certain… *unlicensed facilities* operating within a highly exclusive, rather *judgmental* residential building.” He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a theatrical whisper that still carried to those nearby. “I just received confirmation. Several official vehicles, distinctly marked with ‘San Vespera Animal Control,’ are currently en route to your penthouse, Cosima. A little tip-off from a concerned citizen about a rather substantial, and illegal, menagerie.” Cosima’s face went stark white, the vibrant flush of the evening draining away. Her philanthropy, her secret, vulnerable passion – Leandro was aiming for the jugular. “You wouldn’t dare,” she breathed, her composure fracturing. “Oh, but I would. And I am,” Leandro purred, relishing her distress. “Unless, of course, you’d care to sign over the Navarro family’s proxy votes. A simple digital signature, right here, right now, and perhaps I can make a call before they *breach* the premises.” He produced a sleek, obsidian tablet from his inner jacket pocket, its display glowing with an intimidating legal document. Baltasar dug his fingernails into his palms. This wasn’t just about the Rivo empire anymore; it was about Cosima’s heart, laid bare and under attack. He stepped forward, placing himself squarely between Cosima and Leandro, his eyes narrowed. “You think this is clever, Navarro?” he bit out, his voice low and dangerous. Leandro’s gaze flicked to Baltasar, his lip curling in disdain. He straightened, intentionally raising his voice, ensuring his words would carry through the opulent room. “And who, pray tell, is this indignant… *help*? Ah, yes. The moped boy. The one who *used* to bring us our lattes. How… quaint. Still playing dress-up, I see. What, did you mistake the catering entrance for the red carpet, *boy*? Don’t you have someone’s lukewarm sushi to fetch?” Whispers rippled through the Gala. Faces turned, smiles faltered, and a few snickers were barely suppressed. The humiliation was a deliberate, public laceration, designed to cut Baltasar down and strip Cosima of any support. Baltasar’s hands clenched into fists, a primal urge to launch himself at Leandro warring with the strategic necessity of the moment. He could breach Leandro's handheld slate, sure, but the animal control vans were already moving. Time was a luxury they didn’t have. He glanced at Cosima, expecting to see despair, perhaps a plea for him to back down. Instead, her chin rose, her gaze hard and uncompromising. Her hand shot out, not to restrain him, but to cup his jaw, turning his face to hers. Before Baltasar could process the shift, Cosima’s lips crashed against his. It wasn’t a gentle peck; it was a desperate, defiant, utterly public declaration. Her mouth was soft yet firm, tasting faintly of champagne and something uniquely her own – a mixture of strength and vulnerability. The kiss deepened, a bold, reckless statement that silenced the ballroom more effectively than any security guard could. Baltasar, momentarily stunned, felt his body respond with an instinct he hadn't known he possessed, melting into her, the world narrowing to just the two of them. When she finally broke away, a gasp echoing through the room, her eyes were blazing. She looked directly at Leandro, her voice ringing clear and strong, cutting through the stunned silence. “My family’s proxy votes,” she declared, her gaze never leaving her cousin’s, “belong to the true heir of Rivo Tech. The man who protects what he cares about, no matter the cost.” With a flourish, she reached into the small, beaded clutch she carried and produced a slim, crystalline digital-key. Her fingers, still trembling slightly from the kiss, pressed it into Baltasar’s palm. “Baltasar Rivo. My choice. My future. And my family’s entire stake.” Leandro’s face, moments before smug and triumphant, twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. A corded vein leaped against his temple. He stared at the digital key in Baltasar’s hand, then back at Cosima, his carefully constructed facade crumbling into bitter fury. Without a word, he yanked the obsidian slate back up, his thumb striking across the glass. The device, which had moments ago displayed a legal document, now pulsed with a sinister, red icon. A holographic projection shimmered above the glass, depicting a rapidly accelerating progress bar, labeled: ‘RIVO TECH ASSET TRANSFER – FORCED INITIATION.’ The takeover had begun.
