Chapter 1: The Price of Ruin

1.2k words

Cold water splashed against my burning cheeks. Breathing in slowly, I stared at my reflection in the gilded mirror of the ballroom's restroom. Tonight was supposed to be my redemption. Five years of scraping by, designing in cramped, windowless apartments, and surviving on cheap coffee led to this single pitch. Adjusting the strap of my emerald silk gown, I forced a tight smile. My hand shook slightly as I smoothed down the fabric. But nobody here needed to know it was a cheap rental. Stepping out into the grand gallery, the roar of polite laughter and clinking champagne glasses hit me like a physical wall. Men in bespoke tuxedos and women dripping in diamonds occupied every corner of the room. Searching the crowd, my eyes locked on Marcus Vance's assistant, who had promised me five minutes with his boss. My fingers gripped the leather portfolio containing my architectural designs. This contract to redesign the historic Vance Estate was the only thing that could save my family's failing firm from bankruptcy. Walking quickly, I intercepted the young assistant near the grand arched windows. "Mr. Harrison," I said, keeping my voice steady and professional. "Is Mr. Vance ready for our meeting?" Harrison looked at me, his eyes wide and anxious. He pulled at his collar, glancing over his shoulder as if he were being hunted. "Miss Miller," he whispered, leaning in. "I am so sorry. The meeting is canceled." Panic seized my throat, sharp and icy. "Canceled?" I echoed, my chest tightening. "We had an agreement. I was told if I came tonight, I would get to pitch." "Things have changed," Harrison said rapidly, backing away. "The board had an emergency meeting an hour ago. Marcus Vance was forced out. A hostile takeover." My heart stopped. "Who could buy out a titan like Vance Global?" I demanded, my fingers digging into the portfolio. Harrison didn't answer. He simply pointed toward the grand entrance of the ballroom. Suddenly, the lively chatter in the room died down to a tense whisper. Heavy oak doors swung open, admitting a cold draft from the rainy New York night outside. In walked a man who made the entire room feel instantly smaller. He wore a custom black suit that clung to his broad shoulders. His dark hair was pushed back, revealing a sharp, cruel jawline shadowed by a day's worth of stubble. But it was his eyes that made my blood run cold. They were grey, like a winter storm, and they scanned the room with absolute disdain. Sebastian. My breath hitched in my chest. Five years had passed since he disappeared from my life, leaving nothing but broken promises and a ruined family name behind. Now, he stood here as the conqueror of the city's largest conglomerate. His gaze swept across the crowd, freezing everyone in their tracks. Then, those storm-grey eyes locked onto mine. A slow, dangerous smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. He didn't look away as he handed his wet coat to an eager waiter. He walked directly toward me, his steps slow, deliberate, and entirely predatory. "Hello, Elena," his voice rolled over me, deep and rough, sending a shiver straight down my spine. "What are you doing here, Sebastian?" I whispered, refusing to let him see me tremble. "I own this place now," he said, gesturing faintly to the room. "And everything in it." "You bought Vance Global just to ruin me?" I asked, my voice cracking slightly despite my best efforts. "Don't flatter yourself," he sneered, stepping closer. "You were just a pleasant bonus." His scent hit me then—expensive leather, cedarwood, and the faint metallic tang of the rain outside. It was a scent that used to bring me comfort, but now it only brought a suffocating sense of danger. "I have a pitch," I said, lifting my chin and holding up the portfolio. "The estate restoration. Your predecessor promised me the contract if my designs were superior." Sebastian looked down at the leather folder in my hands, his expression completely blank. Slowly, he reached out, his long fingers brushing against mine as he took the folder. His touch felt like an electric shock, hot and violent. He flipped open the folder, barely glancing at the hours of meticulous work I had poured my soul into. With a flick of his wrist, he tossed the entire portfolio into a nearby decorative fire pit. "No!" I gasped, lunging forward, but his hand shot out, grabbing my wrist in a grip of pure iron. Flames instantly licked the edges of my drawings, turning my only hope of saving my family into black ash. "Your designs are worthless to me," he murmured, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper near my ear. "You monster," I choked out, tears of anger pricking the backs of my eyes. "My father is sick. That firm is all we have left after what you did to us." "Your father got what he deserved," Sebastian said coldly, his grip on my wrist tightening just enough to make me gasp. "Let me go," I hissed, trying to pull away, but he was immovable. People in the ballroom were watching us now, whispering behind their hands, but nobody dared to step in. Nobody wanted to cross the new king of the city. "I will give you a choice, Elena," Sebastian said, his grey eyes burning into mine with an intensity that made my knees weak. "What choice?" I asked, my voice barely a breath. "Come to my office tomorrow morning at eight," he said, slowly releasing his grip on my wrist, leaving a red mark on my pale skin. "And if I don't?" I countered, rubbing my wrist. "If you don't," he smiled, a cold, heartless expression that didn't reach his eyes. "I will buy your father's remaining debt by noon and put him in a federal prison by dinner." My jaw dropped as the sheer malice of his words sunk in. "He didn't do anything wrong," I whispered. "I have the money to make the court believe whatever I want," Sebastian replied smoothly. He leaned in even closer, his breath warm against my cheek. "Eight o'clock, Elena," he murmured. "Don't be late, or I will make sure you watch your family crumble to dust." Without waiting for my response, he turned on his heel and walked away, leaving me standing alone in the crowd as my life's work burned to ashes behind me.
