Heart of the Abyss

The high-pitched whine intensified, pressing in from all sides, vibrating through Kethra’s bones until her teeth ached. The cavern walls pulsed with a furious, internal glow, the stone itself groaning as if ready to rupture. Skritch, a monstrous silhouette in the volatile light, stood protectively before her, his scaled body radiating an acquired, shadowy heat. Envar, sprawled by the wall, scrambled backward, his eyes wide with a fear Kethra had never seen him display. He stared at the shattered anchor-stone, now a gaping wound in the altar, from which blinding, erratic light erupted, screaming with raw, uncontrolled power.
Then, a thunderous crash from the narrow fissure Darev had plunged into. A hand, bloodied and scarred, appeared, gripping the lip of the rock. Muscle strained as Darev hauled himself upward, his mouth drawn into a rigid line, eyes locking onto Kethra’s with fierce, protective fire. He emerged, a phantom wreathed in the light, his stolen broadsword scraping against the stone. He didn’t pause, didn’t breathe, but launched himself towards Envar, a primal roar tearing from his lips.
Before Darev could reach the cultist, the heavy iron doors to the sanctum burst inward with a deafening crack. Freed from the hex, the remaining squad members – Rekkar, Joric, and even the hulking Borik, his arm now crudely splinted – poured into the chamber, their weapons drawn. Confusion warred with fury on their faces as they took in the glowing stone, the mutated beast, and Envar, the man who had ordered their deaths.
“Kill the traitor!” Rekkar bellowed, charging. Joric followed, his short sword glinting.
The chamber erupted into a maelstrom of steel and desperate shouts. Darev engaged Envar, his blade a blur, but Envar moved with an unnatural speed, an impossible fluidity that belied his age. The fracturing mother-stone, though consumed by Skritch, still radiated its raw power, flowing into Envar, making him a deadly echo of the Deep’s might. He parried Darev’s powerful thrust with an open palm, the impact sending a jarring shockwave through the air. Darev stumbled, his expression twisting in pain.
Kethra watched, the breath catching hard in her throat. Envar, empowered, was toying with Darev. Skritch, sensing the shift, tried to intercept, but a flick of Envar’s wrist sent a pulse of concussive force rippling out, throwing the lizard-beast back against a wall with a pained screech. Envar turned, a predatory smile stretching his lips, his eyes fixed on Darev. He moved with a speed that defied human limits, disarming Darev with a swift, brutal kick, sending the broadsword skittering across the floor.
Envar snatched up a discarded ritual dagger, its obsidian blade glinting wickedly. He pressed the point against Darev’s bare chest, directly over his heart. Darev struggled, blood blossoming from a fresh cut on his temple, but the cultist’s grip was like iron. “The ritual requires a final sacrifice, Commander,” Envar hissed, his voice no longer human, but a raspy whisper of poisoned stone. “A pure heart to empower the mother-stone. And a strong, valiant one to seal the pact. You, Darev, will be the Vanguard’s end.”
Kethra’s mind raced. *Pure heart.* Envar had spoken of *her* heart. He had chosen *her* as the catalyst. But her heart wasn't pure in the way he understood. Her heart was full of mercy, a reckless compassion in a brutal world. That was her truth. That was her weapon.
The blinding light from the fractured altar pulsed faster, more violently. The air thickened, pressing down, making it hard to breathe. The chamber was minutes, perhaps seconds, from exploding. There was no time to think, only to act. Her gaze fell on the shattered anchor-stone, still burning with untamed discharge, the gaping wound where Skritch had bitten into it. It was still the focal point, the source of the coming catastrophe.
“No!” Kethra screamed, her voice cutting through the din. She launched herself forward, not at Envar, but at the altar, ignoring the splintered stone and the unstable light. Rekkar tried to grab her, to pull her back, but she slipped from his grasp, driven by a singular, desperate purpose.
Her fingers closed around the jagged, glowing edges of the fractured mother-stone. A searing pain shot through her, raw current coursing up her arm, threatening to consume her. The light intensified, scorching her skin, making the blood in her veins feel like molten lead. But Kethra didn’t release it. Instead, with a fierce, guttural cry, she channeled every ounce of her life-force, every fiber of her healer's magic, into the stone.
She imagined light, pure and unblemished, pouring from her core, through her hands, into the raw blight. She saw the sickness, the dark tendrils clinging to the stone's essence, and she *pulled* at them, tore at them with the force of her will, drowning them in a torrent of brilliant, healing power. A flare of blinding, pure white light erupted from the stone, washing over the chamber. It was not the cold, erratic glow of the Deep, but the searing, purifying light of life itself.
Envar shrieked, a sound of agony and pure hatred. The light touched him, and his withered flesh began to smoke, blistering and flaking away like ash in a furnace. He convulsed, releasing Darev, dropping the dagger as his skin peeled back, revealing blackened bone beneath. His screams echoed, desperate and horrifying, as the purification consumed him, reducing him to a fine, dark powder that scattered in the gale of light. Skritch, buffeted by the white light, let out a chitter of satisfaction.
But the force Kethra had unleashed was too immense, too uncontrolled. The entire vault groaned, not with taint, but with violent expulsion. The floor beneath Kethra buckled, massive cracks spiderwebbing outward from the altar. The air shrieked, a deafening roar as the stone gave way. She felt herself falling, the ground vanishing beneath her feet. The last thing she saw was Darev, his eyes wide with horror, lunging toward her, his hand outstretched, before she plummeted into the yawning mouth of the Ghol-Breach below.
