Chapter 5 of 10
The Parrot Clause

Rhoden, still in the mud, blinked, his expression a comical blend of confusion and a nascent, terrible pride. He opened his mouth, no doubt to declare his undying devotion to Cynara and how this was all part of his elaborate plan to win her back, when Cynara’s voice, cool and precise, cut through the clamor.
“Nonsense,” she stated, stepping forward with an effortless grace that made the grimy docklands seem, for a moment, like a runway. The lamé of Dallia’s ensemble caught the flashbulbs, casting an ethereal glow on Cynara’s severe, tailored silhouette. “Brelis Holdings is not undergoing a ‘unified brand strategy.’ It is currently facing a hostile takeover by the Gault Atelier.”
The crowd gasped. The cameras surged, their shutters clicking like frantic insect wings. Dallia Quell, leaning conspiratorially from her crane perch, let out a delighted shriek. “Oh, *drama*!” she bellowed, fanning herself with a sequined glove.
Rhoden gaped. “Cynara, darling! What are you saying? This is our company, *our* legacy! I would never allow a hostile takeover, especially not from you, my… my muse!” He scrambled to his feet, mud staining the pristine, albeit cheap, fabric of his suit.
Cynara merely adjusted the cuff of her jacket, her gaze unwavering. “Your legacy, Rhoden, ceased to be my concern the moment you signed those divorce papers. As for the Gault design house, we simply recognized an undervalued asset. We fully intend to absorb Brelis Holdings by the end of the month.”
Another reporter, quick to pivot, shouted, “So Jessa Morlay’s new brand, ‘Morlay Luxe,’ is a front for your acquisition, Ms. Gault?”
Cynara tilted her head slightly, a faint, almost imperceptible smirk playing on her lips. “Morlay Luxe? I’m afraid I’m unfamiliar with that particular amateur endeavor. The Gault brand operates on a global scale. We don't acquire side projects; we acquire empires. Rhoden’s empire, to be precise.” Her eyes, sharp as newly honed obsidian, flickered towards a figure just emerging from the edges of the press scrum – Jessa Morlay herself, her face a mask of incandescent fury.
Jessa shrieked, a sound more fitting for a banshee than a burgeoning fashion mogul. “You lying witch! Morlay Luxe is going to crush Gault! Rhoden gave me everything! He told me he was leaving you for good!”
Kaspar Vant, appearing beside Cynara as if conjured from thin air, presented a document to the nearest cameraman with the precision of a surgeon. “For the record, Ms. Morlay, any ‘everything’ Mr. Brelis may have ‘given’ you would, by current legal standing, be considered a direct misappropriation of assets under the impending Gault acquisition. I suggest you consult a lawyer, perhaps one with a better understanding of corporate restructuring than fashion trends.”
Jessa’s face twisted. She lunged forward, but two security detail, seemingly appearing from nowhere, smoothly intercepted her. Rhoden, meanwhile, looked utterly devastated, his grand romantic gesture crumbling into public humiliation. He tried to stammer out a defense, but Cynara simply turned her back, walking away with Kaspar as Dallia, still atop her crane, blew a theatrical kiss to the bewildered reporters.
Back in the Gault Atelier, the sterile white walls and chrome accents offered a stark contrast to the grimy dock. Cynara sat at her polished plasteel desk, a holographic projection of Brelis Holdings’ plummeting stock prices hovering before her. Kaspar stood opposite, tapping a glowing tablet etched with complex legal schematics.
“Excellent work at the docks, Cynara,” Kaspar stated, his voice devoid of emotion. “Jessa Morlay's ‘Morlay Luxe’ is now essentially worthless. No investor would touch it. Brelis Holdings will be ours within a fortnight, assuming current trajectory.”
Cynara nodded, her gaze fixed on the plunging numbers. “Good. The sooner this charade ends, the better. My design team is itching to repurpose their textile imports.”
Kaspar cleared his throat, a rare sound of hesitation from the usually unflappable lawyer. “There’s a… complication. I’ve re-reviewed the Gault family trust clause. The ‘Parrot Clause,’ as your grandfather so whimsically titled it, specifies that for you to inherit the full Gault empire, Rhoden Brelis must *willingly* surrender his assets. A forced bankruptcy, even a hostile takeover orchestrated by you, won’t count.”
Cynara set down her stylus. The holographic projection flickered, unheeded. “Willingly surrender? You mean, he has to *give* it to me? He has to *agree*?” Her voice, usually a flat monotone, turned razor-sharp.
“Precisely,” Kaspar confirmed, adjusting his monocle. “The clause states: ‘Should Rhoden Brelis, within twenty-eight days of divorce finalization, voluntarily divest all major corporate holdings to Cynara Gault, she shall be deemed the sole heir. Failing this, all Gault assets shall be transferred to the Velmoria Avian Sanctuary for the benefit of tropical macaws.’”
Cynara slammed her fist on the desk. The plasteel barely registered the impact. “This is absurd! He’d never freely sign over his equity! He thinks this is a twisted love story!”
Before Kaspar could respond, her comm unit chimed. It was Dallia, voice crackling with barely contained glee. “Darling! You’re not going to *believe* this! Jessa Morlay just held a press conference. She’s announced she’s purchased all of Rhoden’s outstanding debts from every major Velmorian creditor! She’s now his primary creditor, meaning *she* owns his company’s future, not you!”
Cynara closed her eyes. “She bought Rhoden’s debt. That witless woman… she just made herself the gatekeeper to my inheritance.”
The Atelier doors hissed open. A junior assistant, pale and trembling, pushed a massive floral arrangement on a wheeled cart. It was a grotesque assembly of sickly green chrysanthemums, drooping scarlet roses, and garish purple hydrangeas, all arranged around a large, glitter-encrusted card. The stench of rotting nectar drifted across the floor.
“From Mr. Brelis, Ms. Gault,” the assistant squeaked, depositing the monstrosity near Cynara’s desk.
Cynara picked up the card. The familiar, sprawling handwriting of Rhoden Brelis declared: *“My Dearest Muse, Forgive my past transgressions. Attend the Velmoria Met Gala with me, and I shall give you anything your heart desires. Anything. All my love, Rhoden.”*
Cynara stared at the repugnant bouquet, then at the card, a muscle twitching in her jaw. “He thinks attending a social event is the equivalent of freely surrendering a multi-billion-dollar empire.”
Suddenly, the Atelier’s reinforced doors *blasted* inward with a groan of stressed alloy, showering the pristine floor with shards of plasteel. A flock of iridescent, squawking macaws, their vibrant plumage a riot of emerald, sapphire, and ruby, burst into the room, flapping wildly. Feathers scattered like confetti. Amidst the chaos, a severe woman in a grey, unfashionable suit stepped through the gaping maw of the door, clutching a document. Behind her, the cacophony of the macaws was deafening.
“Ms. Cynara Gault?” the woman announced, her voice surprisingly calm amidst the avian pandemonium. “I am Elethra Vex, legal representative for the Gault Family Trust. I regret to inform you, with this delivery, your fourteen-day countdown has officially begun.”
