Chapter 1: Crimson Awakening

Steel shrieked against steel. The clang echoed through the vast training grounds, a familiar melody in young Asgard. Sweat beaded on Leo’s brow, stinging his eyes. He parried a heavy blow, the force vibrating up his arm. Thor, all boisterous energy and boundless might, grinned wide, his own practice blade a blur of silver. “Again, brother!” Thor’s voice boomed, even at twelve years old, shaking the very air. He lunged, a whirlwind of golden hair and raw power. Leo ducked, the blunted edge whistling past his ear, narrowly missing. Always, Thor pushed. Always, Leo retreated, calculating. He preferred the quiet hum of his forge, the precise shaping of metal, to the glorious, chaotic clashes of the sparring arena. This was a duty, a formality. A way to appease their father, Odin, who valued martial prowess above all. Dust kicked up from the polished stone floor. Younger Aesir cadets watched, their wide eyes fixed on the two princes. A flicker of envy, a hint of admiration, in their gazes. Leo ignored them. He moved with a quiet grace, his smaller frame a stark contrast to Thor’s burgeoning bulk. A swift counter-strike, a feint, an attempt to throw Thor off balance. It was never enough. Thor laughed, a sound like thunder rumbling in the distant mountains. He spun, his blade a silver arc, catching Leo’s guard. The impact sent a jolt up Leo’s arm, numbing his fingers. He stumbled back, breath catching in his throat. Then, a sharp, unexpected pain lanced through his side. Thor’s follow-up strike had been a bit too strong, the blunted edge digging deep. Not a serious wound, but enough. More than enough. A searing white-hot agony erupted within him, burning away the superficial pain. It wasn't physical. It was… primal. Ancient. A floodgate burst open inside his mind, unleashing a torrent of fragmented images, sensations, and forgotten knowledge. Worlds shattered. Suns imploded. Legions of demons knelt before a figure wreathed in shadows and impossible power. A name, whispered on a dying cosmic wind, echoed in his ears: *Anos Voldigoad*. His blood ran cold. Yet, simultaneously, an inferno roared. This was not his pain. This was something else. Someone else. A vast, terrifying power surged through his veins, alien and absolute. It clawed at his insides, demanding release. Leo gasped, dropping his practice blade with a clatter. His vision blurred, then sharpened, colors intensifying, details becoming impossibly crisp. The light from the archways seemed to dim, swallowed by an encroaching darkness emanating from… him. Thor paused, concern replacing his battle-lust. “Brother? Are you hurt?” He lowered his own blade, taking a step forward. Leo couldn’t speak. His throat felt constricted, his lungs burning with an icy fire. His body thrummed, vibrating with an immense, unfathomable energy. He felt his eyelids flutter, heavy with a pressure that was not his own. Suddenly, his eyes snapped open. They were no longer the soft, sky-blue of an Asgardian prince. Instead, twin abyssal pits, deep as a black hole, glowed with an unnerving, pulsating crimson. Runes, intricate and terrifying, swirled within their depths, like galaxies collapsing into themselves. Power erupted from him. Not a blast of energy, not a shout, but a silent, pervasive wave of absolute dominion. It twisted the very air, making the dust motes freeze mid-air. The clatter of his dropped blade stopped echoing. Silence descended, heavy and unnatural. Thor, mid-step, froze. His golden hair, caught in a slight breeze, became utterly still. His brow furrowed in confusion, his mouth open as if to speak, but no sound escaped. A delicate layer of frost, impossibly quick, began to spread across his exposed skin, over his armor, his weapon. His breath, visible only moments before, crystallized in the air. Leo watched, horrified, as his brother transformed into a living statue of ice. His own hands trembled, the crimson glow reflecting off his pale skin. The power was cold, so cold, a glacial grip on his very soul. It threatened to consume him, to reduce him to nothing but an empty vessel for this ancient, destructive force. This was not his strength. This was something vast, something terrible, something born of utter annihilation. He felt the pull, the instinct to crush, to break, to erase. It was a hunger so profound it terrified him to his core. He was merely a conduit, a fragile bridge for a power that could unmake worlds. Fighting it, Leo squeezed his eyes shut. A groan tore from his chest, raw and choked. The cold pulsed, threatening to freeze his own heart. He tried to reclaim himself, to push the monstrous entity back into the dark recesses of his mind. A battle raged within him, a silent scream of defiance against the overwhelming tide of power. Slowly, painfully, the crimson glow behind his eyelids lessened. The pressure in his head eased, the roar of ancient destruction quieting to a terrifying hum. His breath came in ragged gasps. When he dared to open his eyes again, the intense, runic glow had faded, replaced by a lingering, unsettling crimson sheen. Thor remained frozen, a tableau of suspended animation. The frost glittered, catching the golden sunlight. The cadets, who had been watching, were now staring, wide-eyed and terrified. They hadn't moved. They couldn't move. Leo took a shaky step back, away from his brother, away from the terrifying display. He looked at his hands, then at Thor, then around the now-silent training ground. A polished shield, abandoned by a younger cadet, lay nearby, its surface catching the light. As the frost dissipated from Thor's bewildered face, Leo's eyes, now glowing with an unnatural crimson, lock onto the trembling reflection of a horned silhouette in a nearby polished shield.
