Chapter 4 of 5

Unleashed Serpent's Venom

1.6k words

A guttural shriek tore through the night. Metal groaned, then shrieked again as something massive tore free. John's head snapped around, his heart hammering against his ribs. The sound came from the warehouse's rear, a section he'd marked as a possible entry point for the Serpents' more 'specialized' personnel. Now, a figure erupted from the reinforced wall, not a door, but a jagged hole. Smoke and dust plumed around it. It moved with unnatural speed, a blur of dark green against the dim light. Mateo cursed, dropping flat. "What in the hells is that?" Movement. Too fast. The figure, bipedal but hunched, sprinted, its long, clawed fingers dragging on the ground. Its eyes glowed a malevolent emerald. Scales, dark and glistening, covered patches of its exposed skin. This was Viper. John had heard the whispers, seen the crude sketches. A Neon Serpent enforcer, a 'gene-mod'. But seeing it, feeling the primal dread it exuded, was entirely different. "Run!" John barked, grabbing Mateo by the collar and yanking him towards a stack of rusted containers. No time for stealth. No time for strategy. Just pure, desperate flight. The creature was a predator, and they were very much prey. Footfalls, heavy and rapid, vibrated the ground. A low hiss, like steam escaping a pressure valve, followed them. John didn't dare look back for more than a fraction of a second. Viper was gaining. Its speed was terrifying, almost blurring the lines between its starting point and their current position. It cleared the distance in impossible strides, its claws scraping against the concrete, a sound that made John's teeth ache. Dodging around a precarious pile of scrap metal, John pulled Mateo with him. They needed a choke point, something to slow the monstrous enforcer. The warehouse interior was a maze of forgotten machinery, broken crates, and discarded parts. A perfect hunting ground for something like Viper. A terrible place for two humans. "This way!" Mateo pointed to a narrow gap between two towering racks of industrial piping. It was barely wide enough for them to squeeze through. Viper, with its broader, more muscular frame, would struggle. John didn't hesitate. He pushed Mateo through first, then followed, scraping his shoulder against the cold metal. A guttural roar echoed from behind them. Viper slammed into the pipe racks, metal groaning under the impact. The entire structure shivered, threatening to collapse. John felt a surge of adrenaline, cold and sharp. This creature wasn't just fast; it possessed immense, brutal strength. They burst into a wider section of the warehouse, a chaotic expanse of defunct assembly lines and giant, idle presses. John's mind raced, searching for an exit, a weapon, anything. His handgun felt like a toy against this beast. Its skin looked like reinforced armor. Bullets would probably just annoy it. "The loading bay!" Mateo yelled, pointing towards a massive, corrugated metal door at the far end. It was their only way out. But the distance was too great. Viper was already recovering, its glowing green eyes fixed on them. It moved with a disturbing fluidity, its body coiling before it launched itself forward again. John skidded to a halt. A heavy chain lay coiled on the floor, thick as his arm, attached to a defunct overhead crane. He grabbed it, his muscles straining. With a grunt, he swung the chain, aiming for a stack of unsecured metal barrels beside Viper's path. Not to injure the beast, but to create a diversion. The chain whistled through the air, impacting the barrels with a deafening clang. They toppled, rolling and clattering, blocking Viper's direct route for a precious second. The enforcer snarled, its head snapping towards the sudden noise, its focus momentarily fractured. This was their chance. "Go, Mateo!" John pushed him forward, then sprinted alongside. His lungs burned, each breath a painful gasp. Viper was recovering faster than he'd anticipated. The barrels were already being tossed aside with casual swipes of its clawed hand, like pebbles. Sweat stung John's eyes. He could hear the heavy thud-thud-thud of Viper's feet closing in. He pushed harder, urging his legs to move faster, even as fatigue set in. The loading bay door seemed miles away. He risked another glance back. Viper was almost on them, its green eyes blazing with murderous intent. Its jaws were open, revealing rows of sharp, needle-like teeth. "Hey, scaly!" Mateo’s voice cut through the air, surprisingly steady. He had veered off, towards a control panel for one of the larger presses. With frantic fingers, he hit a large, red button. A piercing, ear-splitting siren blared through the warehouse, followed by the groaning hiss of hydraulics. The massive press, dormant for years, shuddered to life. Its colossal arm, a heavy slab of reinforced steel, began a slow, deliberate descent. The noise was deafening, a screeching metal cacophony that echoed off the high ceiling. Viper, startled by the sudden, overwhelming sound, paused for a moment, its head tilting, a low growl rumbling in its chest. This was the distraction John needed. "Now!" he roared, putting every ounce of his remaining energy into his legs. They reached the loading bay door. It was locked, of course. A thick, rusted chain secured it. John didn't bother with the lock. He kicked at the chain, then slammed his shoulder into the door, again and again. The metal groaned, protesting. Mateo, recovering from his daring diversion, joined him, adding his weight. The press continued its slow descent, its siren still wailing. Viper, its initial surprise wearing off, focused its rage back on them. It moved with renewed purpose, its movements more frantic, more brutal. The air crackled with its raw, untamed power. John gritted his teeth, pushing with everything he had. The chain rattled, then snapped with a sharp crack! The door shuddered, then sprang inward just enough for them to squeeze through. They tumbled out into the grimy alleyway, gasping for air, their muscles screaming in protest. Cold night air hit John's face, a sharp contrast to the suffocating heat of the chase. He scrambled to his feet, pulling Mateo up with him. They didn't stop, didn't look back until they were several blocks away, hidden in the labyrinthine alleys of District 7. His heart still pounded, a frantic drum against his ribs. His hands trembled, not from exhaustion, but from a chilling realization. This wasn't just a street gang. This was a whole new level of threat. Viper's speed, its strength, its sheer resilience… it made John's current capabilities, even with his System, feel utterly inadequate. His 'Subordinate Recruitment' and 'Territory Conquest' skills felt distant, almost primitive, against the raw, biological advantage of gene technology. He had faced armed men, trained fighters. But this was something else. This was a monster. He had planned, strategized. He thought he understood the city's power dynamics. But this encounter ripped a gaping hole in his understanding. The Syndicate, the true power behind the Serpents, probably had entire armies of these gene-modified freaks. How could he hope to build an empire, to protect anything, when such power existed? A cold fear coiled in his stomach. He was so far from true strength. They reached a derelict tenement building, its windows boarded up, offering temporary refuge. Inside, John leaned against a grimy wall, trying to catch his breath. Mateo was already slumped on the floor, his face pale, his chest heaving. The silence after the siren's shriek was almost as unsettling. Viper was still out there. John closed his eyes, replaying the chase. Every move Viper made, every impossible burst of speed, every display of destructive force. He needed more. He needed to understand gene technology. He needed the System to give him something, anything, to bridge this terrifying gap. The feeling of vulnerability was a bitter taste in his mouth, a reminder of the past, of what happens when you aren't strong enough. He opened his eyes, his gaze hard. This fear, this weakness, it would not paralyze him. It would fuel him. He would find a way. He *had* to find a way. Viper had shown him a truth he couldn't ignore: the world was far more brutal, far more advanced, than he had imagined. His resolve solidified, a cold, unyielding core. He would not lose again. --- Moments later, a terrible screech echoed from the warehouse. John and Mateo exchanged a terrified glance. Had Viper found someone else? Or was it just expressing its frustration? They heard a crash, then another. The sounds were closer than John liked, a reminder of how thin the walls of their temporary refuge were. He pressed his ear against the brittle wood of the window frame, trying to discern the exact nature of the ruckus. Something was tearing through the alley, smashing through discarded debris. Heavy thuds against the building's exterior. Viper was outside. It was circling, like a predator sniffing out its prey. The building groaned under the impacts. Dust sifted from the ceiling. They were trapped. John drew his handgun, though he knew it was futile. Still, it was a familiar weight, a small comfort. Mateo pulled out his own blade, its edge glinting in the faint moonlight. A clawed hand ripped through the metal wall where John had just been, a chilling, guttural growl escaping its throat, a sound more beast than human. John stumbled, looking back to see the enforcer's skin ripple, dark scales beginning to emerge, as if it were transforming even further.
