Chapter 1: A Discord of Shattered Glass

134.3k words

Gold paint flaked off a miniature rubber beak, sticking to his pale, trembling thumb. Lucifer Morningstar sat slumped at his workbench, surrounded by the hollow remnants of his once-grand creativity. Amber light filtered through the cracked stained-glass windows of his private tower, illuminating dust motes that danced in the stagnant air like dead stars. Rows of ducks lined the shelves, staring back at him with vacant, painted eyes. Some wore tiny top hats, others sported miniature horns, and a few were cast in solid gold. They were his only companions in this silent sanctuary, a sterile army built to shield him from the crushing weight of his daughter’s distant hopes. His fingers tightened around a heavy, gilded duck. He had spent hours carving it, trying to recapture the spark of the creator he used to be before his fall from grace. Nothing remained but a dull, aching void in his chest, a deep-seated loneliness that grew heavier with every passing century. Nothing remained of his old dreams, only the bitter memories of a Heaven that had cast him out. He remembered the feeling of falling, the searing heat of his wings burning to ash as he plunged into the dark abyss. Now, he was the King of Hell, a title that felt more like a mockery than an honor. Deep in his heart, he knew he was a coward. He couldn't face his people, and he could barely face his own daughter when she looked at him with those wide, hopeful eyes. He preferred to hide up here, drowning his sorrows in plastic and paint, pretending that his creations could replace the love he had lost. Anger, sudden and violent, flared within him. He hated the quiet of the tower, yet he despised the chaotic noise of the Pentagram below. He hated his ex-wife's absence, and most of all, he hated his own pathetic inability to face his kingdom. White-hot divine energy crackled across his knuckles. The vinyl of the duck groaned under the sudden, immense pressure of his grip. He squeezed harder, letting his frustration pour into the plastic until it melted, fusing briefly with his skin before shattering into a shower of glittering, metallic powder. He let the sparkling debris slip through his fingers, watching it coat his pristine white trousers like fallen starlight. It was a useless exercise, a childish tantrum that did nothing to fill the hollow ache inside him. Slowly, he rubbed his palms together, trying to rid them of the gold flakes. He leaned back in his leather chair, closing his eyes to block out the mocking gaze of his plastic creations. Silence returned to the room, heavier and more suffocating than before. He listened to the faint, distant sounds of the city below, the screams of the damned and the crackle of fires that never died. It was his kingdom, his eternal prison, and he was its most miserable captive. Suddenly, the air in the room grew static and heavy. A sharp, metallic taste coated his tongue, and the fine hairs on his arms stood on end. Lucifer snapped his eyes open, his pupils dilating as the temperature in the tower plummeted. Red static hissed through the radio on his workbench, a chaotic screech that rattled his teeth and made the glass jars of paint vibrate. Crimson clouds outside his balcony began to warp and twist. A strange, violet hue bled through the sky, swirling into a violent vortex that defied the natural laws of his domain. He felt a raw, magnetic pull in his teeth, a tearing sensation that dragged at his very soul. A violent vortex expanded rapidly, tearing a jagged hole in the fabric of the Pentagram's sky. Black lightning crackled around the edges of the rift, casting long, erratic shadows across the room. Instincts he hadn't used in centuries roared to life. His six white wings burst from his back, their golden-tipped feathers rustling with divine energy as he braced his boots against the cold marble. With a thunderous roar, the space in the center of his workshop imploded. A shockwave of pure, unfiltered cosmic energy blasted outward, shattering every remaining pane of glass in a rain of glittering shards. A shockwave of pure force caught him square in the chest, ripping his cane from his grip and throwing him backward through the air. He crashed heavily against a massive marble pillar, the impact knocking the wind from his lungs. He tumbled to the floor in a heap of tangled wings and white silk, groaning as the dust settled. Coughing violently, he swiped a hand through the thick, purple smoke that filled the room. The scent of burnt ozone, sulfur, and fresh blood scorched his nostrils, making his eyes water. In the center of the ruined workshop, where the rift had detonated, a figure lay sprawled on the scorched marble. A figure clad in tattered white silk and gold embroidery lay face down, her body trembling slightly. The smoke began to clear, revealing the outlines of her form. Lucifer slowly rose to his feet, his wings flaring defensively as he stepped over the colorful glass shards. He kept his posture low, hand hovering near his hip, ready to summon his angelic spear at a moment's notice. It was a woman, clad in a tailored white suit with gold embroidery that mirrored his own precisely. Her silver-blonde hair was a tangled halo, sticking to the blood that ran from a deep gash on her forehead. Who... what are you? he demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low octave. She didn't answer immediately. A soft, pained groan escaped her lips as she struggled to push herself up, her black-gloved hands trembling against the cold stone. Lucifer took a step closer, his breath hitching as he saw her face. She was his exact double, yet undeniably female, with sharper, more aristocratic features and a cold pride radiating from her form. She was his mirror image, but there was a cruel elegance to her that he lacked. Even covered in blood and dust, she carried herself like an empress, her posture rigid and unyielding. She spat a mouthful of dark blood onto his floor, her crimson eyes flickering open to lock onto him with an intensity that made his blood run hot. But it wasn't her face that held him captive. His eyes drifted downward, drawn by a sudden, rhythmic movement near her hips. Extending from the base of her spine was a pitch-black, demonic tail. It was magnificent. Unlike any tail he had ever seen, it was long, muscular, and covered in sleek, obsidian scales that caught the dim light of his ruined workshop. It writhed on the marble like a living shadow, pulsing with a raw, hypnotic power. At its tip was a heavy, spade-shaped blade, lined with wicked, silver barbs that looked capable of flaying skin with a single swipe. Such a sight sent a sudden, dizzying wave of heat straight to his core. His heart hammered violently against his ribs, not from fear, but from a sudden, visceral fixation that clawed at his chest. His own tail, a golden-scaled appendage he usually hid beneath his coat out of a deep sense of shame, began to twitch in sympathetic resonance. He felt an overwhelming, magnetic draw, a raw desire that bypassed his intellect and seized his entire being. He couldn't look away from the rhythmic, agonizingly slow twitching of her black tail. The world around him seemed to fade; the shattered glass, the smoking crater, his own bruised body—all of it became irrelevant. She noticed his gaze. A slow, mocking smirk spread across her bloodied lips. She shifted her weight, deliberately arching her back as she pushed herself into a kneeling position, causing her obsidian tail to rise and coil in the air between them. Fascinating, she seemed to find his reaction. Her crimson eyes locked onto his, noting the dilated pupils, the flush rising on his pale cheeks, and the absolute fixation in his gaze. What... what are you doing here? he managed to choke out, his voice hoarse and stripped of his usual theatrical bravado. He took a step forward, completely forgetting his defensive stance. His hand trembled as he reached out, his fingers aching to feel the texture of those sleek, black scales. The urge to touch it, to possess it, was a madness that threatened to swallow his fragile sanity. She tracked his movement, her tail swaying closer to him, the silver barbs catching the light. She could see his weakness, the desperate, pathetic longing radiating off him. I am the sovereign of my realm, she said, her voice dripping with venomous authority. And it seems I have stumbled into the court of a very weak, very lonely little man. Lucifer swallowed hard, his eyes locked entirely on the twitching spade of her tail. He knew he should strike her down, that he was the King of Hell, but the hypnotic sway of her spiked tail held him on a leash of pure, unadulterated lust. He took another step, his boots crunching on the glass. He was close enough now to smell her—a mix of expensive perfume, burnt ozone, and fresh, demonic blood. You don't belong here, he whispered, his eyes tracing the curve of her tail as it arched upward, the spade-like tip hovering in the air like a cobra ready to strike. Perhaps, she purred, her tail swaying closer, almost brushing against his boot. Or perhaps this realm is simply waiting for a proper ruler to take the throne. He reached out, his hand hovering just inches away from the obsidian scales, his heart beating so loud he was sure she could hear it. Before he can speak, the female sovereign wraps her razor-sharp tail around his ankle, dragging him down as she whispers, 'My, what a pathetic little king you are in this reality.'
