Chapter 5 of 10
Critical Tethers and Real Blood

“…Forbidden pattern of the Anchor Ritual.” Inesca’s voice was a whisper, the last word barely audible above the distant thrum of the Alcazar’s Grand Ball preparations. Her fingers, usually so steady, trembled around the glowing bloom. This was no mere flower; it was a diagram of cosmic engineering, a lifeline for a dying god. She looked at Vasco, whose expression remained a serene blank slate of confusion. His golden eyes held no fear, only mild annoyance as he reached for his tea. “The… the what now? Is that some high-tier crafting pattern? I just gathered a few dropped stems and tied them off. They snapped right into place.”
Her chest tightened with a mix of awe and despair. He truly didn’t know. He was building his own rescue, a desperate, unconscious plea for survival, right before her eyes. The sheer, unfathomable power required to spontaneously manifest such a complex ritual blueprint – it was beyond anything recorded in the ancient texts. It was creation itself, struggling to preserve its divine host. She swallowed, trying to compose herself. “Vasco,” she began, her voice regaining some of its scholarly clarity, “This… this is a profoundly sacred arrangement. It speaks of binding, of rooting a vast, immense power to a mortal vessel, preventing… dissolution.”
“Dissolution?” Vasco scrunched his nose. “Like when your character model gets stuck in a wall and phases out of existence? That’s annoying. Gotta report that bug.” He stood up, stretching. “Anyway, the ball tonight. You ready? I heard they got a new dance emote. I need to perfect my ‘Noble Waltz’ before I ask you for a spin. Apparently, that’s how you get ‘relationship points’ with the ‘Scholar of Sorrows’ NPC.” He winked, completely oblivious to the fresh agony he inflicted with every casual game term.
Inesca offered a tentative smile. He viewed her through bizarre rules, yet he still sought a dance. Perhaps that sufficed for now. “I would be honored, Vasco.”
The Great Hall of the Alcazar shimmered under a canopy of suspended, enchanted light-orbs. A thousand nobles, adorned in silks and jewels, swirled to the lilting melody of a fifteen-piece arcane orchestra. Vasco, resplendent in a borrowed, slightly ill-fitting velvet doublet, navigated the crowd with a gamer’s single-minded purpose. His eyes scanned the room, identifying key ‘quest givers’ and ‘resource nodes’. There was the food table, a clear 'buff station', and Inesca, radiant in a gown of deep sapphire, conversing politely with a gaggle of stiff-backed aristocrats. Nuncio, meanwhile, had already found the cheese platters, his cheeks bulging with a particularly pungent brie.
“Alright, Phase One: Approach Target,” Vasco muttered to himself, executing a graceful sidestep around an over-starched baron. “Initiate flirtatious dialogue protocol.” He reached Inesca, offering a small, awkward bow. “Greetings, fair Inesca. Your texture rendering is exceptional tonight. Have you considered an upgrade to your particle effects?”
Inesca’s laughter was a chime of pure delight. “Vasco, you are incorrigible! But I admit, your… compliment is most unique.” She took his offered hand, and a warmth spread through her, a comforting certainty that transcended his odd language. “Shall we attempt this ‘Noble Waltz’?”
They moved onto the polished floor, joining the elegant throng. Vasco, despite his self-professed need for an ‘emote tutorial’, moved with steady balance, his steps light, his hand firm on Inesca’s back. For a few blissful moments, the absurdity of their situation faded, replaced by the simple, exquisite pleasure of a dance. Inesca found herself leaning into his touch, her gaze fixed on the golden flecks in his eyes. This man, this unknowing god, had healed her, protected her, and now, he was dancing with her. She closed her eyes, letting the moment wash over her.
Then, the air curdled. A low, guttural growl vibrated through the floorboards, silencing the music and freezing every dancer. The grand archway leading to the Imperial Gardens, usually a vista of manicured beauty, began to ripple. The very stone warped, twisting like hot wax. A crack tore through the arch, spilling an unnatural violet glare across the marble. Panic erupted, screams echoing as nobles scrambled away. Out of the burgeoning rift stepped Grandmaster Morvath, his face contorted in a sneer of triumph, a sickly green light pulsing around his outstretched hand. “Behold, you deluded fools! The price of blasphemy! This peasant has defiled our sacred arts, and now the Abyss claims its due!”
[WARNING: CRITICAL SYSTEM ERROR – REALITY INTEGRITY COMPROMISED]
[TETHER CRITICAL: SOUL INTEGRITY AT 5% – LOG OUT ATTEMPT FAILED]
Vasco blinked at the flashing red text in his vision. “What? A raid boss in the middle of a social event? Bad game design. And I can’t log out? That’s new.” He pulled out his trusty wooden stick. “Seriously, this ‘event’ is buggy. And Morvath, really? Another re-skin? Come on, innovate!”
From the rift, a monstrous claw slick with black fluid tore through the threshold, followed by a hulking mass of shadow and jagged bone. It was a Rift-Stalker, a beast of pure abyssal hunger, its eyes glowing like malevolent embers. It roared, a sound that stripped the courage from every soul in the room, and lunged directly at Vasco. He raised his stick, ready to 'delete' another 'mesh error'.
But this was different. The creature moved with a terrifying speed, its talons tearing through the air. Vasco felt a strange, chilling sensation, a primal fear he’d never experienced in any game. He sidestepped, but not fast enough. A searing agony ripped through his left arm as the beast’s claws raked across his flesh. He cried out, a raw, shocked sound. Blood, thick and crimson, welled from the deep gashes, staining his velvet doublet. It was hot, sticky, and *real*. The sting was hot, sharp, and entirely unbuffered by any interface. His vision swam with black dots.
“Vasco!” Inesca’s scream was a desperate plea, pulling him from the shock. She rushed forward, grabbing his uninjured arm, her face pale with terror. “You’re bleeding! We must get you to the infirmary!”
He stared at the gore on his arm, then at Inesca’s terrified face. Her fear, the warmth of her hand, the agony in his arm – it all clicked into place with a horrifying, sickening finality. This wasn’t a game. This was real. The hydra, Xal-Gharat, Nuncio, Inesca… they were all real. And he, Vasco Rellano, was bleeding, dying, in a world that was utterly, terrifyingly real. A desperate, burning desire flared within him. He aimed to survive, determined to build that quiet household, court Inesca, and share this solid, sharp-edged world with her. The thought of his bond snapping was no longer a disconnect; it was annihilation.
[WARNING: TETHER CRITICAL: SOUL INTEGRITY AT 3% – IMMINENT ERASURE]
The Rift-Stalker, sensing weakness, snarled. Its grotesque head dipped, preparing for a killing strike. Vasco pushed Inesca behind him, his stick suddenly feeling utterly useless. The monster’s shadow loomed over him, its fetid breath washing over his face.
Then, a small, wet *thud* echoed through the quiet hall. Nuncio, who had been trying to discreetly finish a particularly crumbly piece of cheese, had dropped his snack. His eyes, usually a placid hazel, now swirled with impossible, vibrant galaxies. The air shimmered, not with magical energy, but with something far older, far more potent. The Rift-Stalker, mid-lunge, froze. Every atom, every particle of abyssal energy, held perfectly still, like a paused frame in a cosmic video. Only Nuncio, his mouth agape, and Vasco, gasping for breath, seemed unaffected.
“Oh, man,” Nuncio mumbled, staring at his fallen cheese, then up at the frozen, snarling monster. A sigh escaped him, heavy with an ancient weariness. He turned to Vasco, his eyes still swirling with nebulae. “Look, Vasco. I can only hold this for so long. You’re… you’re breaking the world, buddy. Fast. Every time you ‘fix a bug’ or ‘delete a mesh’, you’re unravelling the fabric of existence. That ‘Beta End Date’? It’s not a timer for your game. It’s when your soul-tether finally snaps and takes this entire universe with it, unless… unless you let me undo you.”
Vasco stared at his best friend, at the unfathomable power radiating from him, at the frozen demon, at the blood dripping from his arm. Undo him? Erase him? He intended to survive. He chose Inesca. And Nuncio, his goofy, snack-loving Nuncio, was asking him to choose. Between his own existence, and the entire universe.
