Chapter 1: Midnight Audits
1.2k words
Heavy droplets of rain hammered against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Vance Tower, blurring the glittering Manhattan skyline into a smear of yellow and red lights.
Midnight had come and gone over an hour ago, leaving the sprawling executive floor empty, silent, and cast in deep, moody shadows.
My hands shook slightly as I straightened the thick stack of financial audits, the crisp paper making a sharp rustling noise in the quiet room.
Julian Vance’s office door remained shut at the end of the long hallway, but a warm strip of amber light spilled across the dark carpet.
Taking a deep, shaky breath, I smoothed down the fabric of my tight pencil skirt, trying to calm the erratic beating of my heart.
Every movement felt heavy tonight, weighted by an anticipation I had spent the last six months trying to suppress.
Working as Julian's personal assistant was a daily exercise in self-control, a constant battle between professionalism and a dark, magnetic pull.
He was ruthless, demanding, and impossibly beautiful, a man who ruled his corporate empire with an iron fist and a cold, calculating gaze.
Yet, beneath that icy exterior lay a raw, simmering heat that seemed to flare whenever we were left alone in the quiet hours of the night.
Walking toward his office, my heels made a sharp, rhythmic clicking sound against the polished hardwood floor, echoing in the empty space.
My skin tingled with a sudden rush of warmth, my body reacting to his proximity before I even reached the doorway.
Knuckles wrapping gently against the frosted glass, I held my breath, waiting for the deep baritone of his voice.
"Come in," he called out, his tone clipped and exhausting, carrying the weight of a long, stressful day.
Pushing the heavy door open, I stepped into his private sanctuary, the scent of rich cedarwood, expensive bourbon, and pure masculine warmth hitting my senses.
Julian sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his dark grey suit jacket discarded over the back of his leather chair.
Dark hair was delightfully disheveled, several strands falling across his forehead as if he had run his fingers through it in frustration.
His white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, exposing the strong, tanned column of his neck and the faint hint of dark chest hair.
"These are the final acquisition files you requested for the merger tomorrow, Mr. Vance," I said, keeping my voice steady despite my racing pulse.
Slowly, his gaze drifted up from his laptop screen, his piercing dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my knees weak.
A heavy silence fell over the room, thicker than the storm raging outside the glass walls.
His eyes slowly traveled down my body, tracing the curves of my silk blouse before lingering on the exposed skin of my collarbone.
My breath caught in my throat as his gaze dropped lower, scanning the tight fit of my skirt and the length of my bare legs.
"Bring them here, Clara," he murmured, his voice dropping an octave, becoming a low, dangerous growl.
Crossing the room felt like walking through deep water, every step requiring a conscious effort as his eyes tracked my movement.
Standing beside his massive desk, I reached out to place the heavy leather folder down, but my fingers brushed against his warm hand.
Sparks of electric heat shot straight up my arm, a physical jolt that made me gasp softly and pull back slightly.
Julian didn't let me retreat.
Instead, his large hand shot out, his fingers wrapping around my slender wrist with effortless, unyielding strength.
"You're trembling," he observed, his thumb lightly stroking the sensitive skin over my rapid pulse.
"It's just cold in the office," I lied, my voice barely a whisper as I looked down at his grip.
A slow, knowing smile tugged at the corner of his lips, revealing a dangerous, predatory charm.
Standing up from his leather chair, he towered over me, his broad shoulders blocking out the dim light of the office.
Heat radiated from his large frame, enveloping me in a suffocating, intoxicating wave of desire.
My back pressed against the edge of his mahogany desk as he took a slow step forward, crowding me into his space.
Trapped between his hard chest and the heavy wood of the desk, I could only stare up at him, my heart hammering against my ribs.
His free hand rose to touch my face, his rough knuckles tracing a slow, agonizing path down my cheek and jawline.
Goosebumps flared across my skin in his wake, my body screaming for more of his touch, for the contact I had dreamed of for months.
"I've been patient, Clara," Julian growled, his face dipping close to mine, his scent filling my head until I couldn't think straight.
"I've watched you walk around this office for six months, pretending you don't feel the exact same thing I do."
"Julian..." I whispered, my lips brushing his chin as I spoke his name, discarding all professional boundaries.
"Say my name again," he commanded, his breath hot against my mouth, his fingers tightening on my wrist.
"Julian," I gasped, unable to hold back the desperate need that had been building inside me for far too long.
He groaned, a low, primal sound that vibrated directly against my chest before his mouth slammed onto mine.
Our lips met in a fierce, desperate clash, a hunger unleashed that had been suppressed for far too long.
My hands flew to his chest, clenching the fabric of his white shirt as I pulled him closer, losing myself in the taste of him.
He tasted of sweet bourbon and pure, unadulterated desire, his tongue sweeping into my mouth with a possessive dominance.
Pushing me back, his arm swept across the desk, sending a pile of folders and pens scattering across the floor with a loud crash.
Papers fluttered into the darkness, completely forgotten as Julian lifted me effortlessly onto the edge of the mahogany desk.
My skirt rode up my thighs, exposing my lace underwear to his heated gaze as he stepped between my parted legs.
Looking up at him, my vision was hazy with lust, my breath coming in short, ragged gasps.
"You are so beautiful," he breathed, his hands sliding up my bare thighs, his palms scorching hot against my skin.
Searing heat followed his touch, making me arch my back toward him as his fingers slipped beneath the edge of my lace panties.
A loud, needy whimper escaped my throat as his fingers found my wet, aching center, stroking me with agonizing perfection.
"Please, Julian," I begged, my hips moving against his hand in a desperate search for friction.
"Tell me what you want, Clara," he growled, his thumb rubbing against my swollen flesh, driving me closer to the edge.
"I want you," I cried, my fingers tangling in his dark hair as I pulled his mouth back down to mine.
Julian’s jaw clenched, a muscle leaping in his cheek as he fought for his remaining shreds of control.
Withdrawing his hand, he quickly unbuckled his leather belt, the heavy metal buckle clattering against the desk.
My heart hammered violently against my ribs as he unzipped his trousers, freeing his thick, pulsing length.
He stepped closer, parting my legs wider and pressing his hard tip against my aching entrance, ready to claim me right there on the desk.
Just as he was about to push inside, a bright light flashed on the desk beside my hip.
His phone buzzed violently against the wood, the screen glowing in the dim room.
Glowing text cut through the darkness, bearing a name that made all the air leave my lungs.
*Are you coming home soon, darling? The wedding planner needs our final decision on the flowers.*
Julian froze, his entire body stiffening as his gaze locked onto the screen, the word 'Fiancée' printed in bold at the top.
